I didn't believe her at first, because I've known my mom for thirteen years.
And I know that she isn't the best when it comes to indentifying animals. But it turned out that she was right - to the pleasant surprise of the entire household - and there was indeed a large, breadloaf-sized kookaburra perched happily on the structure. Now it was certainly a kookaburra, but I'm not certain about the species. I know it definitely wasn't a blue kookaburra - perhaps a laughing kookaburra, except it looked alot more plump and sizeable than this.
Oddly enough, that was the first of the "famous" native Australian animals I've seen in my backyard. To think, some believe that they'd see koalas up in the trees while driving down a common suburban area, or that we actually ride kangaroos as a means of transportation.

Cool razz Kookaburras are neat critters, used to get them around here before they bulldozed the bush to make room for more houses. Haven't seen any koalas but we do get the occasional 'roo in the streets. One got hit by a car in the main street about a month ago; they've been coming into town to look for water- there's very little around due to the drought. Also see a lot of brushtail possums. 3nodding

You're lucky you actually got to see the Kookaburra, that would of been really cool, mostley we hear them around here (the laughing kind) but never see them. (Too bad you didnt get time to get a camera and take a photo of it xp )
It's funny ow people think that about the koalas or the kangaroos, I mostly get asked by my overseas friends "If we have kangaroos on the suburban streets...jumping around" lol.
We've got a possum living in out tree which has been there 5 years now, and has had a few babies, it's there nearly every night.

I heard possums can get annoying, running around on the rooftops and everything.
Do you ever get tired of the kookaburra noises?

Do you ever get tired of the kookaburra noises? Yeah, but it's so amazing. In the tree's, one time it's baby fell into our pool and nearly drowned so we got it out, afraid the mother would attack for touching it's baby but in our surprised it watched up and let us put it up the tree. Also one time when the mother wasn't around the baby's tail was stuck in the outside of the air-con we saved it again (: we held it and it was so adorable. it had a green sleek fur on it. I was in such awe.
Nah the kookaburras are more peaceful than annoying, We have a lot of birds around our street. Though at Wivenhoe dam, I saw 4 blue kookaburras and a koala (:

Blue kookaburras are the ones that have the maniacal laughter, aren't they?
Anyway, I suppose it would be nice to live in a place with that sort of ambience to it. All I hear where I live are dogs barking and cars driving, so some more natural, earthy sounds would serve as a more than welcome break.

Beacuase a the dam all they did was just stay on the ground coming to the BBQ and watching us. But I remeber seeing one that look extremely like the ones I saw and it was laughing.
Yeah it's great when you just want to be alone and do your own thing with all the sounds.

Do you need a license of some sort to have one? I'm not sure. That was the first time i've seen one in a pet store. The onley people I've met who've owned one had licenses to keep certain exotic animals. I live in Califorina and they have pretty strict laws about keeping exotic animals. But since they had it in the front of the store ware every one can see it I'd say that you don't.

I haven't heard of a bird license, but it makes sense to have one if people would want to keep birds like kookaburras or eagles.
One of my friend's families owns a group of bluetongue lizards. I don't know how he came across them, but I'm pretty sure they didn't come from a store. I'm not sure if they have a retile license either - but they do take good care of them. And they aren't the sort of people who'd go out and rip animals from their natural environment just for the sake of having exotic pets.
Those animal licenses can be quite expensive.
The most exotic animal I've seen in a pet store would have to be those salamaders. They're cute looking little things; a bit like axolotls, except smaller and without those external gills. You'd have to have a reptile license to own one if you live where I live, though. Oddly, a person doesn't need a license for spiders or scorpions.
