A small form bounded happily through the grassy pridelands having wandered from the den once again, dark pelt ruffled by the tall stalks. Having inherited his father's spirit, the little explorer must have been quite a handful for his parents. But the pridelands were a peaceful, prosperous land, the safest place for a young one to explore.
The little one laughed to himself, a bright and cheerful sound, as he sprang and pounced after a particularly interesting grasshopper. Tufted tail flicked over his back as he fell into a crouch, creeping up on the unsuspecting insect one pawstep at a time.
One dark ear twitched, orange eyes suddenly distracted by something else, the insect forgotten as stood and stepped forward toward what had chanced to meet his gaze. Laying hidden among the tall grass, curled into a ball of brown fur was a small creature, a wolf pup.
Had Shin'Jougen been familiar with wolves, he would have noticed that this pup was on the small side, probably the runt of the litter. It seemed to be alone, perhaps abandoned by it's mother. However such thoughts would had never entered the young cub's mind, his thoughts were spoken clearly in his innocence.
"Oh wow, a puppy."

The tiny pup had been laying quietly in the grass, doing his best to blend in and avoid the eyes of predators. Left alone, he did not know what the next day would bring or how he would find his next meal. Perhaps, mercifully so, he did not know enough to think such thoughts, only knowing what instinct told him.
Brown eyes looked up at the cub, ears falling against his head with uncertainty. Did this black and white creature intend to eat him?

The cub tilted his head curiously, unaware of any fear in the small pup as he stepped forward into the flattened patch of grass where the creature lay. He was only aware that it was a puppy, and that maybe it would be a new friend.
"Hi! I'm Shin, what's your name? You wanna play?"
His voice was bright and cheerful, full of cubbish innocence and naivety, his posture happy and playful, dancing excitedly on his paws. And then he had an idea, and a broad grin spread across his maw.
"Hey! You're alone out here right? Wanna come home with me? I bet my mamma and dad would like you, and you could help me pick on my sister.
Prancing around behind the pup, he gently nudged at it with his muzzle, encouraging it to stand and follow him.
"Come on, let's go. It'll be fun!"

The pup blinked, staring up at the cub as he danced and bounced around. Small as he was, the poor pup was terrified by the larger animal, instinctively curling tighter, his ears back. He did not speak, merely letting out a sharp yelp in a pitiful attempt to frighten off what must have been a predator.
But the black and white cub didn't seem to want to hurt him, it just wanted to...play? Relaxing slightly, the little one tilted his head in his own curiosity. But before he could respond further or protest, he was being prodded to his feet and pushed to follow the cub. Well he may as well, it was safer than staying here alone wasn't it?

Sheshe was napping, curled up amidst the grasses between the tree roots, curled up with her head on her paws. Mosi wasn't too far away, sprawled out on her back grooming a foreleg with her rough tongue. She was unaware of her son's latest find, honestly, not even sure exactly where he was but by the sounds of his distant laughter. There were too many adults around to worry, the middle of the day? What was going to happen in the middle of the day, after all?
That was when she heard the yelp.
"...."
That couldn't be good.

Shin'Jougen trotted happily, prancing toward his family's den, nudging his new friend along when needed. Tufted tail flicked over his back, a broad grin on his maw, a bright light in his eyes. He had found a new friend, one that he could play with whenever he wanted.
"Come on, we'll have lots of fun. Hey I bet you're hungry, huh? Maybe I can get you some food at the den."
He turned to look at the pup, a bright smile on his maw and in his eyes, a cheerful spirit so full of life and energy.
"Hey, there's mamma!"
Oddly the journey back to the den had seemed so much shorter than the path the explorer had taken from the den, he could have sworn he'd gone further away. Oh well, he had more important things to think about, like how to get his mother to let him keep the puppy. Turning to the small pup, he gestured for him to duck into the grass, emphasizing it with a paw on the small wolf's head.
"Shhhh...wait here while I talk to her, I'll come back and get you."
With a grin, he made sure his new friend was safely hidden, then bounded toward the dark lioness.
"Hi mamma, guess what?"
He did his best to look innocent, it wasn't working.-------------------------- Brown eyes blinked as the small puppy followed after the cub looking utterly confused. But as his steps moved onward, he seemed to warm, the cub's excitement infecting him as well and there was suddenly a bounce in his step and a happy wag in his tail.
Perhaps he had found a friend in this black and white cub, a safe place to sleep, eat, and play as a puppy should. Perhaps this cub was right, it would be fun, and there was a home waiting for him. Captivated by the cub's energy, the little wolf smiled for the first time since they'd met.
Then they stopped, and the cub told him to wait in the grass. He tilted his head curiously, emitting a questioning bark. He didn't understand why he had to hide, maybe it was a game? With a small flick of his tail, the pup nodded and waited as the cub had asked.

Mosi exhaled softly, rolling from her back onto her side, moving to sit up enough that she could look over her son. All she could really do was brace herself for whatever it was he was going to ask, she had to admit she was curious anyway. Besides, there was at least a little mirth to be had by his adventureous tendenencies. That said, it was no surprise that her tone was half amused, half skeptical.
Just what kind of trouble had their boy managed to get himself into this time?
"Does this in -any- way involve pranking your sister...?"

The little cub looked up at his mother, tail wiggling in excitement, an impish grin on his maw.
"Nu-uh, mama, I have more important things to do than mess with a stupid girl."
That wasn't a bad idea though, a small smirk showing that the wheels were turning in his head, thinking up some way to torment his sister. Perhaps his new friend could help him. That's right, his new friend, the reason he come to his mother in the first place.
He danced on his paws, bouncing excitedly back and forth enough to make anyone watching him dizzy.
"This is something much cooler. I was exploring and I found a new friend, and he was all alone. And guess what?! He's a puppy! And he followed me home, can I keep him, mama, can I please?"
No longer able to contain his excitement, the cub bounded into the grass where the small pup waited, emerging again a few moments and hushed whispers later with the brown puppy in tow.
"See mama, isn't he neat?"------------------------ The little one yipped happily as his friend returned, relieved that he had not be left alone again. Springing to his feet with a wag of his tail, he licked the cub before trotting after him. Was it time to play the game?
But as he cleared the grass, his eyes fell on the dark lioness, and a touch of fear struck him. That was a big lion, much bigger than him. His ears dropping, he scurried to duck behind his friend, tail wagging timidly.
"Arro...ro...ro..."
It was a quiet bark, perhaps his attempt at a greeting, or at least an attempt to be cute.

Stupid girl... >/ Hmph. Girls weren't stupid.
... Well, maybe some girls were stupid, but she was sure that what these two had was just a sibling rivalry, plain and simple. She really wondered where Sheshe got her personality anyway, her mother, grandmother, great grandmother were nothing quite like her. It was curious, why did they clash like they did?
He's a puppy! And he followed me home, can I keep him, mama, can I please?"
Mosi's eyes widened in surprise. A pup meant that there was a mother somewhere, probably frantic at the disapperance of their child. How was she going to reason this with Shin'jougen? He seemed to already have his heart set on keeping it, and before she could even consider saying anything he was bounding off again to get it!
Oh boy...
The pup itself, poor thing, looked terrified by the sight of her. Had it ever been around lions before? Mosi's eyes roamed from the puppy cowering behind her son, to her son's slightly larger form sucessfully providing a shield for the young canine. Her tail swayed slow and rough amongst the grass as the mother began to mull over her answer, expression frowned with uncertainty.
"Mmmm.... Shin..." She sighed a bit, then tried again. "Shin, he might have parents who are looking for him, they'll be very upset if they come back and find their baby is missing..."
Her tone remained concerned, not quite convinced, but lacking any scolding suggestion. He might not have stopped to consider that in his excitement after all.
"Did you consider that?"
And now her sun-kissed attention shifted to the wolf again, stance changing once again. Now she sat up a little straighter where she otherwise remained lying on her stomach on the ground.
"You don't have to be afraid of us, I'm not going to hurt you. Why don't you tell us where your from...?"

His expression fell, ears dropping, one paw shuffling in the dirt. He had barely asked and she was already telling him no? Clearly this was not going to be as easy as he had hoped. But he wasn't giving up, it was time for plan cute, and if that didn't work he'd use flattery and guilt, such a devious little cub.
But first he had to convince his friend to stop hiding, how could he help with the cute attack if he was too afraid? Turning, he smiled brightly at the pup, nudging him from his hiding place to stand side by side instead.
"It's okay, that's my mama, she won't hurt you."
His voice dropped to a whisper, his words hopefully only heard by the puppy.
"Act cute, she can't so no if you're cute."
His attention turned back to his mother, the cutest pitiful pout on his face, his eyes lowered, ears lowered, sitting like a perfect little gentleman. When he spoke, he tried to keep from whining, knowing that that would only work against him.
"But mama, he was all alone, he didn't have any parents. Please mama, can't I keep him? I promise I'll take good care of him, just like you take care of me."
He looked up at her with a grin, trying to look as cute as he possibly could.-------------------------- The little pup blinked, cautiously stepping from behind his friend, still a bit timid of the large lioness. But she had said she wasn't going to hurt him, and Shin didn't seem worried, so maybe it really was okay? With a friendly yipe, and a small tail wag, the pup licked his friend again as if to say he trusted him.
Shin wanted him to act cute? He tilted his head curiously, watching his friend's actions a moment then decided to play along. Act cute, he could do that. Sitting back on his haunches, eyes opened brightly, a little smile on his maw, tail wagging, he did his best to look cute as his friend had.
Not knowing how to speak, he could not answer the lioness' questions, but he did his best to do so by nodding and barking when Shin said he'd had no parents, trying to say that what he had spoken was true. Oh how he hoped he could stay here, he didn't want to be alone again, and so he tried even harder to look cute, a quiet yip released from his jaws.

If Shin only knew, the cute bit had never managed to phase Mosi, not after having a friend like Ezeoha, growing up. Oh how that boy used to pout and whine when he didn't get his way! Thankfully Shin knew better than to whine, as that would've worn quickly on even Mosi's nerves, as much as she cared about the children, she wouldn't have them thinking a cute flick of the ears would get em what they wanted out of life.
Yet, ultimately, it was actually the pup's innocent look of hope, and that nod of agreement that won her over. If he didn't have parents then she saw no harm in it, maybe it'd be good for Shin.................................... or something.
After a long neutral look of consideration, Mosi heaved in a deep breath and closed her eyes.
"Alright... he can stay, but I don't want to hear your sister whining to me about you picking on her. You owe me one, squirt."

A happy squeak and the young cub was on his paws, bounding happily around his mother with a grin on his maw.
"Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
A bundle of excitement, he nuzzled against his mother with a soft purr, licking her cheek in an affectionate moment that would become all too rare as the little one grew.
"You're the best, mama, love you, bye!"
And then it was over, and the young cub was bounding back to his friend, tail flicking happily as head-butted the pup affectionately.
"She said yes, you can stay! Come on, let's go play, you can meet my sister! Hey wait, you never told me your name, I know, I'll call you Totoro, cause that's what it sounds like when you bark."
Shin'Jougen grinned happily, bouncing through the grass with his friend to embark on some new adventure of play, debating how to torment his sister without getting into trouble. ----------------------------
Just as his friend had, the little pup jumped to his paws, tail wagging happily at the word that he could stay. He had a friend, he wasn't alone anymore, and they could always be together. Raising his nose skyward, he let out a victorious howl.
"Arooo....rooo!"
He wiggled with excitement, his small body wagging along with his tail, hopping from paw to paw as he waited for Shin to return to his side than trotted through the grass after him. Totoro? He liked that name, and he let out another happy bark to voice his approval.
