Death Note
Story: Tsugumi Ohba
Art: Takeshi Obata
Produced by: Viz (Shonen Jump Advanced)
Looking for something that's a little "out there?" Then you must pick up and read Death Note.
The basic idea is this... a straight A's, genius student finds a notebook belonging to a Shinigami (death god) and discovers if he writes a name in it, that person will die. Thus he sets out on his own quest to create a utopian world rid of evil. However... people dying all over the place isn't a good thing, so the authorities start looking into the case, sending their top detective (who's also a genius) after him. From there, it just gets more interesting...
The story is extremely deep and dark. If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, I highly suggest this one.
Personally, I have trouble figuring out who to root for. There's not really a set "good guy" so you don't know who's going to "win" in the end. It's a fascinating read.
There are currently nine volumes out. There will be thirteen total volumes, according to my information. Book nine was just released in January '07 so I'll keep you posted on the rest. mrgreen

I love Deathnote (sidenote, they've started showing the anime now in Japan)! I never really rooted for Raito/Kira. I can see how he came to believe in trying to get rid of all the criminals to make the world a better place and whatnot. But I just don't agree, I guess. And the characters that go against are so, SO much cooler than him and his allies *cough*Missa*cough*.

It is interesting, but overly lame in a since...
The mystery and suspence pulls you in, but the concept is lacking...

I'm curious to see where you drew such a conclusion from. I thought the idea was pretty good, actually. I should read up on Shinigami a bit sometime and see what some of the actual stories are. I'm sure there have been stories with a similar theme before, but I havn't seen a manga quite like this. I'm not bashing your opinion, just asking you to support it. mrgreen I'm curious to know what you think!

The power to KILL people. Shh! Don't let anybody find out, but if you go through this weird little process, and have this book, you can use it! Maybe even change the world with it! CAREFULL, for in the WRONG HANDS, there could be a real mess! Is there such a thing as the right hands for this?
It's like sitting through an introductory course to ethics one day, and some kid who thinks he's got a bright idea goes on ranting... Then, oh the horrors... -> A class discussion!!!
I wouldn’t read the manga if it weren’t for the detective type intrigue that comes along with the setting and such… That is what makes the story, ya’ know?

I suppose so. mrgreen I see where you're coming from now.
I suppose that is a theme that does come up often in various places. Still... I like the direction the manga went with it. It must have taken quite a mind to procure such a story.
Then again... I heard that the author of Death Note is a real winner... apparently had some jail time, for what I'm not sure. Anybody know more on that one? I forget the details... but it's an interesting point to bring up, no?

Well, the 13th volume is really more like a "explanatory" kind of thing, such as....L's real name. heart
And I have to say. L's real name is HILARIOUS. xDD! If I had a name like that, I'd call myself L too.

death note is a beastly manga. ryuk is awesome. and if you havent read the new novel, Another Note: The Los Angelos BB Murder Cases, i strongly recommend that you do. It is written in terms of Mello's notes on L, its great, and the cover is hot too.
