Standing from a rooftop overlooking her apartment I watched. I flicked my cigarette, pondering what the oracle Mar De Lai told me. Isn't it ludicrous that such a young, pretty, weak human, could be my undoing? She was staring at the sky indiscriminatingly. Her luminous green eyes were searching for something. I flinched as her eyes locked with mine, and then continued on their path as if I were vapor. My shoes clicked against the concrete of the roof as I begin my path away from her; this girl's very presence disturbed me. If she has the capability of destroying me, I must assess my situation. I must find out what power she has; what power she holds over me. I laughed to myself quietly. And besides, killing her quickly would be…no fun.
A deep velvety voice called behind me, "Reizel, have you tainted yourself further than murderer and sadist to becoming just another Peeping Tom?"
I raised an eyebrow and turned around to see a face that I am all too well acquainted with, "You have need of me Norial?" My voice rang of annoyance, "Or are you just here to check up on me?"
Norial swept her stunning white hair out of her face and peered down through my targets window, then looked up and chuckled vindictively to herself, "I must say though darling, she is very pretty, but I think she is a little too…virginal for your tastes."
I brought my hand up to Norial's throat and began to squeeze, lifting her off the ground. My voice became lower, emotionless, "You make the mistake of forgetting who I am. The only reason you get such lenience from me, plaything, is that you and I have…history."
She flailed her arms slightly, choking under my grasp. I dropped her, letting her fall to the ground. She coughed madly for a moment and then wiped her mouth. "That was not very nice Reizel…" She looked up smiling in spite of me, "Besides, I prefer if you didn't use your false 'mercy' on me, thank you very much." She smoothed her lacy black skirt against her legs and rose. I stared at her icily, "If you're going to be that way," Norial made a dismissive hand gesture at me and began to saunter away. "But your behavior is rather curious, so don't be surprised if you find me 'poking' around."
My patience with that woman is wearing thin. She speaks to me in such a way as to make me seem inferior to her. I could crush her; the only reason she is still around is her use to me. But her devotion to me, as of late, has become shaky at best. If she doesn't plan on staying loyal to me, then she better not let me find her. It is, however, too bad; her expertise at infiltrating mortal society was valuable. But there are others, I smiled smugly. There are always others.
But enough of that, I have more important matters to attend to. I descended down the fire escape to the street below, my coat moving sinuously behind me. There are far easier, faster ways for one such as myself to get around; but in a large city it is less conspicuous for me to be "on foot". I think to the girl, her haunting emerald eyes had burnt into my mind. I have been in hundreds, nay, thousands of battles; I have slaughtered countless humans and demi-beings. And yet… nothing I have done or seen unsettles me more than that girl. Would I feel this way without Mar De Lai's sinister premonition? The prophecy echoed in my mind: This girl and you are twin souls; she will be your undoing. Be vigilant, learn to beat her at her own game, and stay unchanged Reizel, but this will be more difficult than you can imagine. One way or another you will have to stay strong, for where she is your defeat is near.
