Personality: Vox is a spiritual, gentle Aeri with an abiding love for the world and its creatures. His reverence toward the moon can be explained by the circumstances of his birth, and he is often heard to say to another, upon parting, "May the moon guide you".

Location: Quirne, by the Ocean, and the fruitlands of Shrilal - he rarely goes to D'ob, being unable to deal with large groups of Nequus very well.

Vox's Tree is located in the South Quadrant

The Tree

"Hail, Nequus. The moon loves you..."
- Vox

You step into the shade of the branches, right at the edge of the area this Nequus must call its own. From here you can see the tree entire - it is a beautiful oak tree with gnarled branches that look far less threatening in the dark than you might expect. Its leaves are a dark, rich green, patched with spots of pale yellow in a way that ought to, but does not, look unhealthy. The trunk seems to be covered in marks and pieces of plant matter. There is a large branch overhead and to your left, a small shrine on the ground to your right, and a little sign some way around the perimeter. A dark green Aeri male stands nearby, watching you with gentle eyes.

Please do not mark this tree, or its leaves, without the permission of its owner.

As you approach him, the Aeri's soft eyes turn upon you. He speaks to you in a gentle voice. "Hail, stranger, and welcome to the place of my birth. I am Vox, voice of the night, and I shall tell you whatever you wish to know...within reason!"

Extended Bio:

Vox was born from one of the southernmost trees of Shrilal. It was a night of patchy clouds and soft drizzle, and the circumstances of his birth were difficult. Nonetheless he managed to persevere, and soon took his first steps out into the world with an open and wondering heart. He believed that the moon, showing through the clouds, was guiding him onwards, and this has formed the basis of his spiritual nature.

He spent a good deal of time during his early life wandering the coast, learning its twists and turns, and listening to the other Nequus - mostly Bae - from the fringes of D'ob. The large crowds at the grazing grounds were intimidating enough to keep him hidden, but nonetheless he picked up a good deal from watching and listening. One of the things that was most impressed upon him was how much better things went when one Nequus was polite to another, and thus manners have become very important to him. From wandering the edges of the human lands he learned of art, and soon began attempting to mimic the human ability to manipulate chalk and charcoal. His efforts at drawing are clumsy at best, but he enjoys the patterns he creates nonetheless.

Soon after his first attempts to fly, he met with Lucius on the coast near his tree. The two got along splendidly, although Vox was terrified of the elder Aeri at first, and a friendship was formed between the two. Vox looks up to Lucius as a father figure, and aspires to be as tall and strong as him when he is grown. Since then, Vox has become better at flying but still lacks any great skill in the field: he does not consider himself to have learned yet, and will probably not do so for some time to come.

Shrine of the Moon

Before you is a small shrine, built entirely of sticks and adorned with chalked symbols of the phases of the moon. A good number of marked leaves have been pinned on to sharpened sticks around the edges of the shrine.

Friends

Here you find marks on the trunk in chalk, earths and charcoal depicting beautiful, bright-eyed Nequus. Vox must respect and admire the creatures he has drawn here.

Lucius

A handsome, dark Aeri stallion with a spectacular set of rather morbid accoutrements is emblazoned across the trunk - Vox has spent a long time trying to get this drawing right, but it has the air of a child's efforts about it. This must be the first drawing he made here.

User Image

Vox nudges the picture fondly with his nose. "His name is Lucius. I met him at the ocean shore. Though I was frightened of him at first, I quickly came to like him and his calm, gentle manner of speech. He is a veritable fountain of knowledge, and he is willing to share that knowledge with me - that alone makes him worthy of note, but his kindness towards me is more than enough to call him my dearest friend in the world. He is as much a father to me as anyone could be, blood or no, and anyone who seeks to harm him is my sworn enemy: much as I dislike conflict, I will face anything to preserve his life, honour, health and happiness, just as he would for me."

Oren

A brown and white patched Bae colt is shown, a defiant expression upon his face. Vox has done his best with the complex markings on the Bae's wings, but they are rather clumsy.

User Image

Aku

A small, dark-coated creature with blue eyes and prominent pointed teeth is shown here - it is clearly not a Nequus, and after some inspection it appears to be a Rit. Carnivorous (or at least omnivorous) though it clearly is, the feline has a friendly expression.

User Image

"Oh, him?" Vox laughs. "Aku. Yes, that is supposed to be a Rit... He is the first Rit I ever met, and I liked him at once. I often envy his handsome coat, but I do not think I should like to be so small - he is often accidentally harmed by larger creatures. In any case, he is a good friend to me. He brings me interesting talk and fascinating treasures, and he has a true, brave heart. I am always glad to know creatures such as he."

Altair

This drawing is dark and hard to make out at first, but after some inspection it is clearly a dark Reya stallion. His small pepper-like markings have been estimated as well as possible, and his maroon coat is picked out in berry juice. Startling white eyes stare out at the observer - this painting, though unskilled, has an air of life to it.

Enemies

Here you find marks on the trunk in chalk, earths and charcoal depicting monstrous Nequus-like beings. It is clear that Vox does not like the creatures he has displayed here.

Brakrin and Attia Shade

Two dark, Nequus-like shapes with devil-red eyes are shown here, their Bae wings sharply pointed and their teeth exaggerated into daemonic maws. It is unlikely that either drawing is intended to be exactly lifelike, but rather to represent the nature of the depicted creature: in this case, wholly and utterly evil.

Vox scowls at the image. "The dark devils," he says, laying his ears back against his skull. "These so-called Nequus have no respect for life, love or good behaviour - they kick fruits around for their amusement, and they beat foals just to hear them scream. Even grown adults are not beyond their reach, provided said adults are small enough, weak enough, isolated enough to present no threat. They are heartless bullies, and they were better to pray that we never meet in person: I would not hesitate to deal them, on behalf of all their victims, a blow they would never forget. The moon hates them, my friend...the moon hates them."

This side of the trunk is covered in strips of bark, upon which have been inscribed records of thoughts and feelings. They seem to be arranged in date order.

The Largest Branch

Looking up, you can see a stub where a fruit used to hang - this must be the spot from which Vox was born. There are some strange objects dangling from the branch nearby, but nothing is touching the last remnant of the fruit stalk. It seems to have been treated with reverence.

Birth Story

DareDelvil
It was raining. Fat droplets of water, soft and warm as tiny pillows, bounced humdrum off the leaves of the mighty oak tree. They ran, too, before they touched the ground, over the surface of a single, dark green fruit, ripe and heavy with its precious burden of life. Those fruits that had hung around this verdant chrysalis had long since fallen to earth, and the younglings once held within their walls had probably settled down for their first true experience of sleep. The night hung about the landscape like so many swathes of black silk, cool and obscuring.

All was not well.

Something was moving inside the lone chamber, contorting the outer membrane but seemingly unable to breach it. Had there been any light to shine through the fruit, or indeed anyone to observe the scene, twig-like limbs would have shown black and shadowy against the inner wall. Like a spectator at a twisted show of shadow puppetry, they might have watched as the creature twisted, flailed, contorted, thrashed, but never broke free. The fall to earth might have assisted, but the connection between fruit and tree was still horribly sound - there was no sign of it breaking. And whatever was inside was running out of time.

A shroud of cumulonimbus blanketed the land. Not even the stars bore witness as the struggles ceased.

Without a doubt, the next few moments would have been far more triumphant had the rain not masked them.

The tearing of plant matter, inaudible over the clatter of raindrops on the leaves above, announced the turning of the tables. A pair of hooves ripped out into the air near the top of the fruit - the youngling must have summoned the last of its strength for one almighty blow - and that was all that was needed. Gravity did the rest of the work. The outer membrane parted like a curtain, and a dark shape tumbled to the ground. Free. Coupled with the chill night air, a surprisingly soft impact, at least for one not cushioned by fruit, was enough to knock the newborn's system into rapid gear.

His first, gasping breath cut through the sound of the rain.

For some minutes the foal lay on the ground beneath the tree, shivering and panting, trying to recover some energy as the wind's icy teeth snapped nearby. The night had grown cold so swiftly, and no one felt it more than the sap-soaked youngling. Instinct cried out for food and shelter, but tiny limbs were having trouble responding to the commands of an inexperienced brain. Where was he to find food in any case? The fruit was still hanging from the tree, much too high to reach from the floor.

Only one course of action remained. Steeling his flanks against the bitter cold, the foal struggled to manoeuvre his legs beneath his body and stand. Predictably enough he fell over the first time, but his resolve seemed unshaken. Weakened though he was, the determination to survive still burned in his young heart. He tried again, and again, to no avail. Finally, on the fourth attempt, he managed to plant all four hooves on the ground, balance himself with his wings and stand. His legs shook, more with the effort of balancing than with the cold, as he gingerly raised his head to the torn fruit above.

Sweet, sticky sap dripped on to his forehead as he tore a mouthful free - success. The high-energy fruit seemed to warm him from within, and, galvanised, he snatched another bite. Legs a little more sure, he shifted to stand taller. Leathery wings flapped a little at one point to prevent him from overbalancing. A good two thirds of the fruit was out of reach, though, and he would need more food before long.

After eating what he could manage to tear down, the foal took stock of his surroundings. No great abundance of grass beneath the oak tree, and in any case he would need more fruit of some kind if he was to grow strong. Ears twitched - no sound of danger yet, but time was of the essence. He could not stay here, sanctuary though it seemed, for there was neither accessible food nor enough water. And yet, looking out into the night, the world seemed very large and inhospitable beyond the reach of the oak tree's branches. Was this the fate of every Nequus? Cast into the world alone and uncared for?

Perhaps someone heard the youngling's silent prayer. The clouds peeled away from the night sky for a brief moment, and a finger of silvery light brushed against the grass just beyond the boundary between tree and world. Transfixed, the foal turned his eyes to the heavens.

The moon, full and pale and perfect, seemed to smile down upon his sticky, wondering face.

His world as he had known it falling silently away, the young Nequus took his first tentative steps towards the light. This was it. The Truth. Even alone, thrust into a strange world with no elders to guide him, suddenly the nature of life was beginning to make sense. He had been intended for this night, for this struggle, for this hard-fought victory, and now for this shining reward.

The first touch of moonlight upon his back, almost a physical caress, was only an affirmation of belief.

Slowly, testing his legs, he broke into a careful trot. The rain was warm, for the wind had fled at the moon's arrival. Fresh, clean water washed away the last vestiges of the foal's difficult birth. All the while, the moonlight seemed to race ahead, leading the way into the world like a mother. Excitement rushed through the youngling's veins, intoxicating his mind and invigorating his limbs. He began to run faster, almost galloping now, not fleeing but chasing, not fearing but wondering.

And then the clouds passed, and the moon reigned supreme.

Indescribable joy filled the foal's heart as he reached his top speed, instinctively knowing, as all horses do, how to gallop. The landscape of the night was dusted with silver moonlight, illuminated but never dazzled, and everything around was wild and free and beautiful. This was the way. This was the Truth - to feel the moonlight upon one's face, to run through the night unburdened and unchecked, to love the world as one's own self - this was not only Nequus. This was something more. This was a great and powerful birthright, with a great and powerful name, and the foal, suddenly knowing it, revelled in it.

Spreading his bat-like wings as he galloped ever onward, offering up his heart and soul in thanks to the benevolent moon, the newly anointed child of the night took a deep breath and called out, exultant, triumphant, his very first word.

"AEEERIIIII!"

Vox's Inventory

There are all sorts of strange bits and pieces tucked into a hollow where the trunk meets the largest branch. Quite how Vox came by these trinkets is a mystery, but they all seem to have some form of personal significance.

- A long, dark purple flight feather, from its size probably a Jala's
- Several shiny beetle cases, various colours
- A clean, complete, slightly gnawed fish skeleton
- A black, twisted twig, stripped of its bark
- A collection of apple pips
- A long, wavy red tail hair

Quirne, the Ocean

The view from here is breathtaking. As you gaze out over the moonlit water and watch the stars twinkle in the depths of the ocean, Vox walks up beside you and follows your gaze.

"How do you like the view?" he asks softly, a faraway look in his eyes. "I am young by the standards of the world, and yet I have so many memories of it. This spot, to me, represents my hopes and dreams. Some day I shall know what lies beyond that horizon, and bring the love of the moon to all the creatures I encounter. For do we not all, at our hearts, wish to be loved?"

Vox's Goals

- To learn to fly
- To cross the Ocean
- To become as tall and strong as Lucius
- To conquer his fear of large groups
- To defend foals and fruits from assailants wherever he can

Prayer Leaves

The leaves on the shrine are all marked in some way - scratched, scribbled on with charcoal or chalk, or simply bitten. They all appear to be giving thanks to one person or another.

- Lineart, colouring, certificates, Nequus world concept: lostlinx and Kealdrana Sasaiuni (Vox has probably spelled this last horribly wrong)
- Vox character concept, writings post 2 onwards: DareDelvil (Vox has drawn a little heart. Aww.)
