Episode Recap:

Sam and Dean investigate a small town in Wisconsin where children are falling into comas for no apparent reason. The brothers discover that a witch is creeping into the bedrooms of the children and stealing their "life force." While battling the witch, Dean recalls a past mistake that almost cost Sam his life at the hands of the very same witch, an event which has fueled Dean's protectiveness over Sam and his blind obedience to his father.

Lore:

Shtriga’s

The Shtriga is an Albanian vampire-like witch who is often believed to take on the form of an elderly woman. The Shtriga preyed upon infants by drinking their blood. “They feed on Spiro Vitae, Latin, translates into meaning ‘breath of life’ Like your life- force or essence.” The Shtriga is also believed to the cause of adult mortalities and diseases. The word Shtriga is derived from the Latin word Strix, ‘screech owl’, which refers to flying demons that only attack at night. At night the Shtriga can change into a moth, fly, or bee. Belief in the Shtrigas continued to exist up until the early 20th century. Most of what we know about Shtriga is from two written works by Edith Durham who traveled through Albania and other Balkan countries.

Spotting and Slaying a Shtriga

One way to create a charm to protect against the Shtriga is to follow a Shtriga in her natural human form at night. Eventually she will vomit some of the blood she had drank from her victims. According to the belief, if you scrape up some of this vomit onto a silver coin, wrap the coin in cloth, and wear it always, no Shtriga can harm you.

The Shtriga usually lives incognito in a community. It was generally hard to identify her, however, a telltale sign was a young girl's hair turning white. She even goes to church for the regular services. She could be detected during such a service by passing out bread spiced with garlic. A Shtriga will always refuse to eat anything containing garlic. The second way is to place a cross of pig bone on the doors of the church after everyone in the community has gathered inside. Everyone but a Shtriga will be able to leave the church through these doors.

Interesting Facts:

When recounting other places the "Shtriga" hit, Sam says that it had been to "Brockway, Odgenville, and North Haverbrook" These same (fictional) towns were swindled out of a fortune by unscrupulous con-man Lyle Lanley in The Simpsons episode " Marge vs. the Monorail."

Quotes:

Michael: I thought I was having a nightmare.
Dean: I'd give anything not to tell you this, but sometimes nightmares are real.

Sam: You're getting wise in your old age, Dean.
Dean: Damn right.

Dean: Dad never spoke about it again. I didn't ask. But he, uh, he looked at me different, you know. Which was worse. Not that I blame him. He gave me an order and I didn't listen, and I almost got you killed.
Sam: You were just a kid.
Dean: Don't. Don't. Dad knew this was unfinished business for me. He sent me here to finish it.

Michael: King or two queens?
Dean: (asking for a room) Two queens.
Michael: I bet.
Dean: What'd you say?
Michael: Nice car.

Sam: (Michael'll) always know there are things out there in the dark, never be the same, you know? Sometimes I wish that...
Dean: What?
Sam: I wish I could have that kind of innocence.
Dean: If it means anything, sometimes I wish you could, too.

Dean: You’ve heard a gun shot before?
Michael: Like in the movies?
Dean: It’s going to be a lot louder then in the movies.

Sam: I don’t know why you didn’t shoot him right then and there.
Dean: Yeah, Well. First of all I’m not going to open fire in a friggin' pediatric ward.
Sam: Good call.
Dean: Second, it wouldn’t have done any good cause the b*****d’s bulletproof unless he’s chowing down on something. And third, I wasn’t packing. Which is probably a really good thing cause I probably would have just burned a clip in him off of the principal alone.

Sam: Hey Dean, I'm sorry.
Dean: For what?
Sam: You know, I've really given you a lot of crap for always following Dad's orders. But I know why you do it.
Dean: Oh god, kill me now.

Sam: An old person, huh?
Dean: Yeah.
Sam: In the hospital? Whew, better call the Coast Guard!

Sam: It got away?
Dean: Yeah, Sammy, it happens.
Sam: Not very often.
Dean: Well I don't know what to tell you, I mean, maybe Dad didn't have his Wheaties that morning.

Sam: Dude, dude, I am not using this ID.
Dean: Why not?
Sam: Because it says Bikini Inspector on it!

Dean: Don't worry, I'm sure there's something in Fitchburg worth killing.
Sam: Yeah, what makes you so sure?
Dean: Well, because I'm the oldest, which means I'm always right.
Sam: No it doesn't.
Dean: Yeah, it totally does.

*nods* They are... Wonderful... And it totally has its own FEEL to it... It's kinda weird... Cos I haven't ever gotten so detailed about eps, etc. except for Buffy/Angel/Firefly... And Supernatural has SUCH a different feel to Joss-Verses.... It's all new and exciting! *SQUEE!*

Oh I know.... cause before it was ALL about Joss... well.. and Farscape/SG-1/SGA for me.. but each show/writer has their own feel... and very distinct way of doing things.. YAAAY!

Now.... Joss/Kripke..... Mmmm I'd love to see that combination.
