Ok, so yesterday, I was chatting with some friends on MSN, and my mom saw me writting "I don't have...." I was then lectured on how the way I used the verb is, and the right form is wrong. Ok, now English is my second language, so this is why I need help. My mom studying english for a while, and could have became an English teacher had she finished her course. So, I guess she knows more than I do. However, a british friend of mine says it's correct... So... Any help with this? My mom insists it's wrong. Is "I don't have..." a modern change or something? gonk

"I don't have..." is correct.

Now if you want to see a common mistake, it would be with any or none. One is in the presence of and the other is in the absence of.

I'm positive that there's no rule against "I don't have..."

Of course, this is if you use it right. Something like "I don't have $100" would be fine. Saying "I don't have no money" would be wrong because of the double negative.

Exactly. Like I stated about in the presence of and in the absence of. The correct usage would be "I don't have any money."

Well thanks guys. However, she just finished showing me some grammar books, that show the negative form of have has haven't got, or have not got, and she's already wondering if my friend really is british, wish then was followed by another remark on how good the computer is for *****, when I told her that I could try and track their IP... God parents can be annoying >>

That is the correct form of "to have" when conjugated negatively. However, you conjugated "to do", and are correct in your assumption as well.

It's the English language. Off the top of my head I can think of six different ways to say that phrase, thanks to contractions.

yeah I can't see what's wrong with "don't have"...maybe she wants you to write it out fully like "I do not have"..maybe you could ask her what's the right way then??
