Does your school or theatre company have a special something they do before a show? A tradition? I know with my school we have a special something called Mountain Dewism. It usually happens 5 minutes before we go on stage. One the lead guys says a line of good luck and then everyone chugs their Mountain Dew to see who is the first one to finish. Pointless and probably not the best thing to do right before going on stage but it's a tradition. What do other people do, if they do anything? Just curious to see.

Before each show at my former school we had what we called Energy Check. We'd all stand in a circle and get ourselves psyched up for the show and focus our concentration. It started off with tongue twisters and enunciation excercises and stuff, and we'd play a couple games. Fun stuff. And teamwork stuff. Like the pulse. Twas great fun, and a huge tradition. It's always lead by 2 seniors who have the Energy check book, and it's always passed down at the end of the year.

At the beginning of our final show, we go around the room and dedicate the show to someone, or someoneS. Some of them are boring, like my family. You get a lot of those, but some of them are funny like I dedicatge this to my family, and everone who hates the Red Sox. Some are actually meaningful. I like the tradition.

Well if I'm working in a Drama Production we have this cape that has a mask from every show we've done since our director started here (three years) and she believes that the stage holds the spirits of past shows so we all share a moment to honor them (Good luck I guess) and so she picks a well deserved person and they wear the cape walking around our circle and we all touch the cape.
If it's before One Act (still in Drama Department) we divide in half and half of us sit in a circle and the other half stand behind some one in the circle and they bend down and whisper something they admire or appreciate about that person, when everyone has rotated through and they are back to their origional person, we switch and the circle stands and yeah you get it.
Now if I'm working on a Choir production we all get together and warm up of course and then we get super quiet and all we do is walk around hugging everyone and doing our absolute best the whole show, then after the show we all meet at the I.H.O.P. and eat at like 10 o'clock at night
Yeah they're real diffrent but that's because my schools Drama and Choir departments fight like cats and dogs, I'm the only one who has ever in the history of both directors, played in both a Choir and Drama production. It gets me some evil glares from the students but the directors dont seem to mind.

well it's not so much a tradition that the performers do... but things that happen at the spaces/ the equipment does to the performers/techs that we all have to deal with just for the privledge of working there...

we have 3 spaces at my school... at the procenium space a bulb in a lighting unit blows at least 3 out of 5 shows... eventhough we can't figure out why...

and then we have 2 black box spaces right next to each other and in both of them there is either a show where the light board completly self destructs and none of the light cues work (for example it gets stuck in a cue and you have to shut it off to get a black out and turn it back on to get any light on stage)... or a costume piece (or peices) disapear

We lots and lots of traditions.

Before each show we stand in a circle, say a prayer (catholic school), read shel silverstein poems, say something we're thankful for or going to miss, and sing any of the following Lean on me, Livin' on a prayer, Piano Man.

During the traditional sunday strike party we have Hammies( Or phony tonies or winter roasts) which are just fun awards to remember our times during the production and we have the infamouse topless guy run. Basically the guys take off their shirts and run around the school. It's amusing.

Before shows we all have a warm up where we all say one of our lines in charecter, the techies have fun with this one cause they can either be boring and say the standerd "executeing cue 5" or they take one of their favorite lines and put a spin on it any my personal favorite is makeing up a line that you would say if somthing went wrong (IE: SM: WHY THE HELL IS THE PHONE CROWING?). It gets pretty entertaining. after that we have vocal warmups conssisting of ohhing and awwing and whoooping and of course toung twisters. after that we have a short meditaition time where we can pray, picture our job or what have you. then we link and have a large group PULSE after which the SM yells places and we bolt to our spot to 1) get our energy up and 2) try and open ASAP seeing as we tend to start about 5 minutes late.

At my school about 5 minutes before show, we all go outside and gather in a circle and put our hands in the middle and start to whisper "zigazaga" over and over getting gradually louder. Then we start to jump up and down and by the time we are yelling, we throw our arms up in the air and then go back in to start the show. Most of the time, because everybody has to be in "zigazaga" the show ends up starting like, 10 minutes late! xd

The actors have something where they have a sign that says "Play like a champion" and four leaf clovers painted on it.. then they all have to hit it twice or kiss it.. so by the end of the four nights it's very lipstick covered. They also pass down the dressing rooms to different people. It was hilarious when the guy who had it this past year passed it on (the previous "owner" was this british guy), he said, "The guys dressing room has been doing great back in american hands." and I thought it was funny. *shrug*

However, we techies have our own. We have a sign, correction, had a sign that was a cup, with the word FUH on it, with a "don't" circle drawn around it. (Don't fuh cup) but we had to move it because one of the "higher ups" figured out what it meant. There was also my "Glowtape" sign that one of the lighting people so rudely threw away with out my premission. Whore. Anyways.. we have the techie streches while the actors do their thing... then we all stand in a circle and put our hands in, then bounce up and down going "AHHHHHHHHHHH" and move in a clock wise direction. Then we stop, someone counts off and we scream either "Don't FUH cup" or "Glowtape" depending on if our TD is around.

But since our signs were destroyed by stupid lighting people, I became the sign for the last show.. so I got punched repeatedly. sweatdrop

We have a lot. Some of them are a little odd... some just disturbing.

Before each show we do something we call "circle", where the cast and running crew links crossed arms (right over left) and the director kinda gives us a little "pep" talk. Then, one of the seinors takes a stuffed animal called Meeko (it's from Pocohontas) who's holding a biscuit and we all have to kiss the biscuit. One time someone licked the biscuit and now we all do (yes, I'm sure we all have herpes by now). This was started by a beloved senior that left the year before I joined. Then, we do something called "tikka-tikka-ahh" where we all jump up and down chanting "tikka-tikka-ahh, tikka-tikka ahh ahh!" and then we all break on a certain word (the day we found out that we were invited to perform at thespian conference we broke on "conference!").

Another one: the seniors cut up little pieces of paper shaped like little sperms with the year and name of the show. Every cast member wears them somewhere in their costume (usually in their undergarmets) or else it's considered bad luck, though I forgot my spermy every other show last year and it was fine... wink Unless you wanna blame me for technical errors. surprised

Another one is to go out to eat after a show (in your make-up if you're feeling cooky). Usually it would be Denny's after opening night, but that kinda died down. I don't like Denny's.

And finally, during "circle" on the last show we always do a special "senior circle" when the seniors talk and everybody cries their eyes out becasue they're leaving. We usually have to start the show late. Last time I was crying until I had to go onstage in the second act.

I can already see new traditions forming with my friends and I. Who knows what we'll do when we're seniors!

Before a play we all get out on the loading dock *le back* and hold hands. We say osme sort of silly prayer *or sometimes a real nice one, depends on who says it* Then we all get into a smaller circle *then it just looks like a great big mob of people* and kick our right foot in screaming "hussa hussha hussha" and then again with the left. meh. Another is whenever we do a musical (since it is the bands ritual, not ours) and the conductor would come out and would slap his knees and we had to do the same and then he would say "breakdown" and everyone would have to jump up....its kinda weird. sweatdrop whatever gets you through a show

In my high school in the dressng rooms all the juniors decorate the seniors mirrors. Then the year before the seniors are really seniors at the cast party six seniors are picked three guys and three girls and each night before the show and after we give 1 boy and 1 girl a senior shower. Mostly the guys do it before the show and then the girl does it after. Senior showers are very gross, and I hope to god I am not picked for it. It when people stand in the shower with a bathing suit on and you throw crap on them like ketchup, sprinkles, and anything you find in your kitchen. Someone actually threw eggs at the person. It's grosssss

I'm sure a lot of other theatres do this tradition. Our tri-school theatre does the Gypsy Robe tradition.. where a robe covered in small memorabilias from every past musical is sewn onto the robe.. and every year it is passed down to a member of the CHORUS/ENSAMBLE (not a lead) who has shown much spirit and a good attitude during rehearsals. The person it is passed down to has to add memorabilias from that show onto the robe.

As for stuff BEFORE a show.. I know the actors usually play this game called 'Jigalo' where everyone stands in a circle and sing 'Jigalo Ji-jigalo Jigalo Ji-jigalo' and one person calls a single person to do some kind of dance move with this: (example)
Rob: Hey.. *picks random person* Tina!
Tina: Yeah Rob?
Rob: Do you know how to jig?!
Tina: Jiga-what?!
Rob: jigalo!
Tina: well... *sings* My hands are high, my feet are low, and this is how I jigalo *does dance move to song*
EVERYONE: *copies dance move while singing* My hands are high, my feet are low, and this is how she jigalo! ...Jigalo Ji-jigalo Jigalo Ji-jigalo
Tina: hey.. *picks random peson* Bobby!
Bobby: yeah Tina?!
...then rinse and repeat, until a good number of people have gone xd

We do 'merde'. Everyone stands in a circle and holds hands. Our director squeezes the person's hand on his right and that gets passed around. When it gets back to the director everyone runs towards the centre of the circle and yells 'MERDE'.

It's mostly an excuse to yell a French obscenity...but it's tradition. wink
