My dance teacher keeps telling me that i keep "sickle"-ing my feet. And she hasn't really showed me how not to. So, first off, can someone tell me what that is, and secondly, how to stop doing it? I'd really appreciate it. biggrin

Ahh! I sickle my feet all the time, so I know what you're talking about. It's where, when you're pointing your foot, you roll in (toward your big toe), or if you're standing on releve, you roll out (toward your pinkie toe). Here's a better definition.

Sickling

You'll have to scroll down to the 's' section to find it, I think.

As for how to stop it, just make sure your foot is pointed straight, and if you're on releve, remember to have your weight centered above the big toe joint. Weight should be distributed between the pad of the big toe, the ball of the foot just below the big toe joint, and very little on the next toe.

Hope that helped.

This is sickling your foot:

whee Ew, notice the legs are all shiny? Anyway, its when you have your toe more forward than your heel. How my dance teacher described it to me: You know the Grim Reaper, right? That guy that some say comes and takes you away when you're dead? Well he carries a weapon. Notice the blade is shaped like a crescent sort of? It's like that. His weapon is called a sickle. So if you notice yourself sickling your foot, imagine that the Grim Reaper is going to come and cut it off with his sickle! xd Not a pretty picture, but a good visual and reminder. To prevent a sickling foot, pull your heel forward, so that it makes a nice line following the angle of your leg. Like this:

Notice how the back foot (the one in coupe') has the heel pulled forward? That's what we're going for. Much more attractive, ya? Also just plain pointing as hard as you can will help. Remember: Heel forward or beware the Grim Reaper! whee

The first one? Some people in the guild had it, so I used it because its so me. I'm always playfully arguing with my friends that don't dance that it is a sport. xd

Even though you have had your question, somewhat covered, here is what I would recomend doing, because I have had a horrible turnout problem, or as your teacher says, sickling problem! Work on the frog position, and your middle splits, thoughs will help your turnout, which helps you prevent sickling, because if you turn it in, then you will sickle your foot!! Hope I helped somemore!! biggrin

Yeah, that one. That should be one of our guilds banner, don't ya think? Is "sickle-ing" common among dancers?

That would be a cool one. Good idea. I think it is very common, I see it in most of my classes (especially the ones I teach in whee ). I think everyone does it at some point, but eventually train their muscles not to do that. 3nodding

One thing that helps (how much depends on how bad you sickle your foot) is pushing your heel forward. BUt then again my teacher says I have a good point...
