Recently, I found out that my friends, some of which I thought Christians, curse very regularly. Now, I am not saying they are not Christians because of it, but I must admit it shocked me.

Perhaps I have been too sheltered, but I was never allowed to cuss and frankly never wanted to. I have grown up in a Christian home, and it is my belief as well as my parents and my teachers that cussing is rather bad.

Perhaps you have a different opinion? I have run into many Christians lately who cuss a great deal and it blows my mind. I was wondering, for I have not been able to find many verses on this, if you maybe had a verse to offer about it, or simply an opinion.

cussing is wrong in my opinion. even though i've been guilty of it in the past. (get mad lose temper kinda thing xp ) i try not to cuss. all humans are gonna occasionaly say something bad even if it's not cuss/swear words. that's why we must ask for forgiveness when we do & try not to do it again.

Yay, here comes the random post from The Samurai!

I think there have been disCUSSions on cussing.. no pun intended.. but my stance remains on the subject:

Cussing is something that some people take liberty in but I myself do not participate in. If someone cusses around me, I'm not offended, it's up to them. The thing is, as Christians we need to represent Christ. whether we like it or not, we are representing Christ in EVERYTHING we do. So if we're going around cursing up a storm, I think we are misrepresenting Christ. What good comes out of cussing anyway? it just proves you have a lack of vocabulary... smile

Yes, I agree. I actually managed to find a verse after I posted this, and I am surprised I did not think of it earlier. Ephesians 4:29 says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
I feel uncomfortable when my friends do it, because it did not start to show until recently, and I always had the idea that they didn't do that sort of thing. Now I am not sure, and we have not been getting along very well. I believe they think my stance on certain things challenging, and I have no idea what to do. But there I am again, getting off subject.
I want to encourage those trying not to curse. I will pray for you.

It all depends on perspective. hwy are some words considered bad, cani not hurt some one more deeply with five or six well chosen totaly "good" words as i can with one "bad" word. I may just be on an anti authority kick but the onyl reason we think the words are bad is because we were taught that they were bad. It's kind of like dissinformation or re-education. in laymens terms "brainwashing" we have been brainwashed into believing that somewhere between 7 and 20 words in our language are "bad" . ever seen a dictionary? those things are huge. think how many words are in there. and only 20 of them are bad.

I have a hard time not cursing, and a lot of the time i think it depends on not only the environment you were brought up in (ex: no cursing in my house) and the things you listen to. A lot of the music i listen to will swear occasionally (though i've found a whole other group of songs that don't, so i'm censoring myself).

When i'm angry or depressed, and not really in the mood to please anyone, i will admit that cursing is something I struggle with. It's mostly just been this year though, since 8th grade I haven't sworn once, but it's becoming a real issue.

I also think it depends on your perspective, as mentioned before. I'm not offended, but I wish people would find a bigger vocabulary. it's the same as when the "like" was overused, it just annoyed me after a while.

My personal opinion about cussing is it is good unless it is directed towards the LORD, or if they are used for no reason.

My belief is that we shouldn't say or do anything we wouldn't do if Jesus was standing right next to us. You wouldn't curse in front of Him, so you shouldn't use such language in everyday life.
I have a problem with swearing. It's something I've prayed about and definitely need to work on in my life.
