Jonah came back to the tournament ring, feeling refreshed from some water healing after his first battle. It was sad that he had to skip out on the second round, not to mention his match with a firebender was won out of a technicality, but he was bumped up to the third round. He wondered who he would be fighting next, hopefully a water bender or an air bender.
Nevertheless, Jonah assumed his ususal wide and sturdy earthbending stance, ready to begin the match. He looked around for his opponent, wondering who it was going to be.

Sadly for his opponent's wishes, it was neither Water nor Air that he faced, but the high-born Sanada Flame. Xio arrived in his usual fashion, ambling stoicly up the stairs leading to the platform with silent aplomb and to his own personal timing.
The figure was swabbed entirely in a charred earthen-brown cloak that dragged the ground in tatters, the hood pulled back to expose his face to the sun and his eyes to the opponent. One glance at those steely portals affirmed quickly that Sanada Xio was one person who was not here for fun or friendly sport.
Right leg slid backwards and pivoted forty-five degrees, left stepping forward and planting firmly. Both hands, and arms for that matter, were hidden well within the folds of his cloak, torn so as to appear that it was little more than a long poncho of sorts.
"I am ready." The voice dropped across the arena with weight, giving the sense that it was but a wall holding back incomprehensible ages of raw burning heat, uncooled by time.

Jonah had the feeling that this was neither an airbender or a waterbender, not even an earthbender. There was an unusual sense of heat to this person, a hint to make Jonah think he was a firebender. He had already faced a firebender, but this one felt considerably stronger.
"Oh great...."
Jonah kept his stance, ready to bend earth against this firebender. Since he said he was ready, Jonah figured he would start it off. With a 180* pivot foreward, Jonah stomped one of his boots down on the ground, raising a chunk of the rock platform he was on. With a quick cylindrical motion of his arms, Jonah shaped the chunk of earth into a stalagmite. With another 180* pivot into a jump, he then kicked the stalagmite at the firebender, the rock heading right for his abdomen. Jonah was wondering how he would react to it; hopefully he would use a technique that would let Jonah size him up.

When the opponent makes the first move in battle, it can mean one of three things: They wish to make the fight end quickly, they are simply testing out your capabilities, or they attempt to create a diversion. Xio was highly trained... in fact, it was all he'd done in his life, and he knew well how to handle such measures.
Raw heat suffused a five-foot radius around Xio with a replacement of his feet, drawing out his arms and laying them across his body before sweeping them down and up in lateral manner. It would be visible as a slight shimmer of air, but moreso visible was Xio's foot as it rocketed skyward in a flash, upending the earthen missile so that its point faced upwards. The roiling air current created by Xio's heat aura helped to facilitate this, as Xio was not an incredibly strong person in comparison to those of his background from the Earth Kingdom. But he did well enough, it seemed...
With one hand, Xio caught the end of the stalagmite above its point, and set its larger end gently on the ground with nary a thud. "Are you finished?" - The voice resounded across the arena, and seemed to raise the temperature of the area by a scant few degrees.

"That can't be good..."
Jonah witnessed his earth missile redirected with such ease, coming from a firebender made it bad news. He would have thought the firebender would either break it or just run it into the ground, but catching it was somewhat taunting. He seemed to be mocking his earthbending, something that seemed to light a small ember inside of him. Jonah did well enough to keep a level head, but determination was in his eyes.
"For now. Show me what you're made of..." Jonah waited in his stance, wondering what kind of flame technique the firebender would use on him. He had to be ready for anything, as an advanced firebender would surely have some kind of tricky technique that would break people's combat foundations. Jonah couldn't let this happen, not when he was an earthbender.

Xio wasn't one to disappoint, at any rate. Trailing the earthen missile behind, the prodigal firebender stalked quietly across the arena, his ice-flame eyes fixed upon his opponent... a piercing and freezing glance wrapped in ever-burning fires.
He made no attack as of yet, he merely continued to close the gap in distance silently, moving forward with deliberate and meaningful steps.

Jonah, true to his neutral jin, made no more attacks as the firebender came closer to him. Normally he would have kept him at bay with a little earthbending, but that would come later if things got hairy. Jonah preferred to fight his opponents at a distance, but he was curious as to how this firebender would chose to fight.
"Wait for it.... Wait for it...."
Jonah held his stance, curious as to what technique this firebender was planning on using. Whatever it was, Jonah had to stay ready.

The young man came to a stop in front of his earthbender opponent and stared darkly into his eyes with an icy glare. "You..." He spoke with impunity, that authorative voice that commanded respect even when mocking or insulting. "I think you dropped this." He held out the other end of the stalagtite to Jonah with an impassive glance.

"What a p***k...."
Jonah found a cold shiver running down his spine, an ironic thing to find coming from a firebender. The very thought of how a non-muscular firebender deflected the stalagmite gave Jonah a feeling of uneasiness, but he managed to stay ready. Seeing as though the firebender was acting like a hog monkey, Jonah decided to retaliate with some smart words of his own.
"There's a no return policy for that..." As he said the words, a simultaneous thought ran through his head.
"Now."
Jonah brought his leg in slowly, scraping his armored boot along the ground. Once it was straight beneath him, he pushed down, uphevaling the ground underneath the firebender's feet. If Jonah's technique was anything against this firebender, he would have repelled him quite a ways away from where Jonah was standing.

The earthbender was incorrect in his observations, likely due to the cloak and ritualistic war-armor that the Sanada prodigy wore about his frame. Xio was indeed muscled, but not in such an obscenely grotesque way as to bulge and slow his movements - the boy was strong, maybe not as strong as most earthbenders, but more than what could be expected from such a skilled swordsman.
Xio himself had been expecting that... his opponent was an earthbender, and as such their attacks were generally limited to the ground. Not to mention he had a bit of experience with their techniques himself, even if he hadn't the ability to use them. As Jonah changed his stance, Xio readied his, merely shifting his weight some.
The firebender, not but an arm's length away from the earthbender, rose skyward in his own direction, directly above the earthen-manipulator, as it would be, by no far margin. He drew back his left arm and unleashed a large fireball down below... behind its blazing glare, gathered his heat to him and followed after, prepared to strike Jonah with a blazing kick if the earthbender attempted to dodge within his attack range.
If the earthbender opted to shield himself... he'd find unexpectedly that the fireball contained the very stalactite he'd sent against the firebender in the first place, point first. This would likely be enough to sunder most quickly-erected defences and allow for Xio to make his attack unfettered.

Perfect, all Jonah needed to see was a flaming fireball coming right at him. It wasn't the first time he was faced with fire, but seeing as though this one was stronger left him uneasy. With only a few seconds to think, Jonah decided on a quick course of action.
Jonah stomped his foot down quickly, raising a sizeable boulder out of the earth. With a quick pivot kick, he sent the boulder upwards, right at his firey opponent. Then, without hesitating, Jonah bent the earth underneath his feet with a quick push backwards to carry himself out of harm's way, much like a snow board, for a decent amount of time while the boulder would make contact. While he waited for the impact, Jonah jumped up from the slab of stone he bent and bent it upright so he was standing on the top of the wall. He had another idea in mind for the firebender.

Xio's fireball was intercepted and smashed by the flying boulder. The fireball hadn't taken much energy to produce and it wasn't a power-attack, it was mainly for show. The stalactite and the boulder's collision, however, cleared the way for the firebender... who landed with a non-flaming kick that left a shallow crack in the earth below him.
Staying crouched for a moment, Xio cocked an eyebrow at the earthbender and straightened up, brushing hair away with a pass of his sub-armored left hand. "Not bad. Nevertheless..." The Sanada heir stood and began walking towards Jonah with a oneness that spoke volumes of resolution. Confidence exuded from the firebender in an obscene way, he was sure of nearly everything; himself, the battle, the outcome... Disturbing, if one read too deeply into it, but that's a result of training in nobility. The ingrained arrogance was never truly countered.
Xio stopped several meters before the slab of stone, and beside him, a firepit bellowed imperiously, kicked into a roaring mess by the heatwaves that comprised Xio's personal unsurpressed aura. He may not be incredibly powerful compared to others above him, but that little fact was lost in his latent intimidation factor, depending on whichever opponent was susceptible to it.

"Just what I would expect of a firebender like you. You fight for something; I can tell..."
Jonah waited to strike, ready to give his last remark before he initiated his counter. The firebender he was now facing had a lot more experience than the one he had fought previously in the tournament, but that skill had given him a little insight onto what firebenders could actually do. Since fire was nearly unpredictable for Jonah to guess on, his reading of his opponent's antics had given him a pretty sizeable insight.
"Yet, you underestimate the toughness and listening of earthbenders..."
Once the firebender stopped walking, Jonah felt it was time to use his counter. With a combined effort of bending, chi, and concentration, Jonah had stomped down hard on his slab of stone to send it down into the ground, lowering himself right down onto the ground. At the speed the stone wall went down, willed by Jonah's earthbending skill, it initiated a see-saw effect and sent the earth underneath the firebender's feet to raise up into the air and act like a stone spring. After his move had been dished out, Jonah stood ready for an intercept to a firey technique.

Xio wasn't one much for contradicting an opponent in the middle of a battle. However, he had learned well from the scrolls of earthbending and fighting notes made by predecessors in his clan, and it was Jonah who was underestimating him.
As the firebender noticed the rise in tension and energy flow before him, he realized that his opponent was about to perform a technique... the moment Jonah lifted his leg to its apex, Xio was sure it was an attack of some sort... and that meant it came from below. He tensed and then uncoiled, leaping nimbly to the left, but unknowing of just how far the attack would extend. As such, his right leg was caught by the uplifted earth, sending him up higher and into a spin.
But the being airborne was not unusual for Xio, and he righted himself with minimal effort, landing nearby Jonah on one hand, springing forward from it until he landed... a foot away and back-to-back with his opponent.
