The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall has the distinction of being the most reliably photographed ghost of all time. Named so after the brown evening gown she appears in, this ghost has appeared in photos that to this day cannot be proved as hoaxes. Lady Dorothy Walpole, sister of England's first Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, died at Raynham Hall after a bout with smallpox in 1726. Her ghost was first seen in 1849, and has appeared many times since. She is always described as wearing a brown, satin dress and having large, dark voids where there should be eye sockets. England's Captain Provand took this famous photo of the ghost during a magazine shoot in September 1936. To this day no explanation aside form the ghostly Lady Walpole remains for the photograph.
