Ok, well, in the RENT movie, in the song "Without you", when Benny and mimi are together, why are they together? I thought Benny married Allison so he's like, not in their little group thing. He got all rich. But, if he was cheating on her, he would be more secretive about it with Mimi, and there was nothing said about him divorcing his wife.

I have a possible explination:
Benny never divorced Muffy, he's just cheating on her. He trusts the Bohos enough not to tell Muffy, especially since they want nothing to do with her.
There's also a deleted scene where Benny tells Roger that he just wanted to be there for her, just as a friend.

Yeah, the difference from the movie and the play is that in the movie, Mimi and Benny were once together, but now their relationship is simply platonic.
And my guess as well would be that no matter how the group feels about that relationship, they probably wouldn't go out of there way to let Alison know what her husband is doing.

I wonder when Benny and Mimi were together. Didn't she say it was two years ago? Wouldnt that have made mimi 17? Wow.

Actually on the DVD in the deleted scenes there was a scene where Benny and Roger talk about Mimi after she disappears. Benny explains that he was just helping her out as a friend and that she still loved Roger.

I agree, you should watch the deleted scene on the DVD, if you can. It'll make things make a little more sense.

i wondered about this same thing too. personally i think its kind of weird but i guess benny just wants to be a "friend" *cough* its a little dissapointing because in the broadway he seems to call allison/muffy(whatever her name is) and say that he really wants to help his freinds and show them that he is still there friend. but i dont know....

Actually, in the plays version of La Vie Boheme, Benny makes it clear that he already knew Mimi. Plus, in the reprise of "Happy New Year", Benny says Benny Does Your Boyfriend Know Who Your Last Boyfriend Was? Then, at the beginning of Goodbye Love, ROGER: It's true you're with this yuppie scum? BENNY: You said you'd never speak to him again. So in the play at least, Benny and Mimi were an item, with Benny cheating on Muffy.
