Hope I'm write in posting this on the main forum... didn't seem appropiate to any of the sub forums.
James Pease 1/25/2004 Hope in the Cards
Devon set his hand with a smirk, but buy all accounts the game looked to be going badly for him. Bill had countered just about everything of consequence he'd tried so far, it was only by sheer luck that he managed to play his pheonix this turn without it being countered too. Bill was pounding him into a pulp and Devon hadn't even done a scarp of damage to him. "What do you have to smile at Devon?" Said Bill with his eyebrow's raised. "That little bird isn't going to help you against my leviathan." Devon shook his head with a laugh, causing his unkempt hair to fall in his eye's for what must have been the twelfth time that morning. "Just play the cards and cut the chatter you old schemer," he retorted playfully. Bill was much older than Devon, he was a senior and Devon just a freshman. As a general rule he knew his skill at Magic by far surpassed all the other players at the school. Still, this crazy kid with his long hair and unnerving habit of closing his eyes and pretending to sleep while it wasn't his turn while still somehow knowing exactly what cards were being played had Bill worried that this kid was the one doing the scheming here. In the background Joe and his girlfriend, Sandra, were having another one of their hypothetical debates, this time it was about Magic. "If it were real... just imagine the possibilities," said Joe whimsically, his starry eyes locked with Sandra's. Sandra was the one who was truly interested in the couple’s discussions, Joe just liked to be with Sandra. "I would be learning to be a healer instead of a doctor for one thing," mused Sandra, completely oblivious to Joe's staring eyes. "What about you little guy?" She asked Devon. "First of all I'm not 'little guy'," responded Devon, not looking up from the game. Bill was attacking with his leviathan. Devon still had eleven life points left, and the big whale that was coming his way would set him back by ten, leaving him just one life point away from losing the game. Without glancing at his hand he said to Bill as he turned a twenty sided die that served to keep score to show a one: "Second of all I'll take the damage." Then he looked up to meet Sandra's eyes fixed and serious. "Third of all I'm not entirely sure the human race would be able to survive having that kind of power at their disposal." "Why's that?" Quipped Sandra, taken aback by the boy's tone. Bill motioned to Devon that it was his turn, and Devon drew a card from his deck. He took a single glance at it and nodded as if thoroughly satisfied. "This is why," replied Devon coolly as he tossed the card onto the table. Bill groaned in despair, Devon had drawn the only card that could have possibly won the game for him, and the senior knew his defeat was certain. Joe stared wide eyed at the cards on the table, he'd been trying to beat Bill for three years and this freshman had come in only today and pulled it off on his first try. "What is it?" asked Sandra, who didn't really understand the game, she just liked the pictures on the cards. "Obliterate," sighed Bill, tossing his hand down and sweeping all the cards he had on the table together into his discard pile. "A veritable atomic bomb, it destroys everything on the field and there's no way of stopping it." "Aptly put," said Devon sweeping all but one of his cards into his own discard pile with a flourish, "and it proves my point perfectly." Sandra stared aghast at the picture on the Obliterate card, a single man raising his hands as he unleashed a giant firestorm of destruction. "I... see what you mean, Devon," gulped Sandra, suddenly feeling that she feared the boy. "Of course I could be wrong," said Devon cheerily. He picked up his phoenix and showed it to Sandra. "Humans are sometimes like this little guy, rising up from the ashes, perhaps even gaining a little wisdom each time they do."

Cool! You're really good at writing stories about MtG! I've had situations like that a couple of times, and it felt that way. Like: My opponent has the Timeshifted Leviathan, and I play Slivers. Both at 1 life. I play Shifting Sliver. xd
