U prolly just cant relate well. Everyone needs to apply what their learning to somthing to give it more meaning to them, or else you're just gonna end up half assing it cause you're bored. How long have you been looking at theory? When i started it was a bore, but after a while it really helps you to figure things out and helps out your note choice. also, the people teaching you just might suck at teaching. its easier to take in if you get a teacher to kinda personalize it and show you privatly.

theory for guitar isn't as developed as it is fro piano or violin and such, because it hasn't been around as long, so they're still developing stuff for it that's why people don't liek ti much
but it's still useful to know the ruels and everything
and also i think it was steve vai who said

Man, you don't have to know theory to be "technically good" but you learn so much faster if you know exactly what makes the sounds that are coming out of your guitar. Geez lighten up on theorists everywhere.

Personally, I kind-of like theory (well, I'm the freak who enjoys learning grammar, so I don't expect many agrees.... rolleyes ). Yeah, it can be boring, but you can also get a lot out of it. Would I rather play some simple lick until I know it so well it's painful, or would I rather learn some really sweet technique that sounds amazing when practiced enough? The second, definately. Maybe it's boring to practice or to learn it in the first place, but it is so worth it. Plus, you get satisfaction from not being ignorant.

99% of the time i write music just jamming, but sometimes if i cant get the right sound ill go to a scale book or key charts i have, and use a combonation of them and whatever sounds cool(so it can be like a aolean and a regular key with random stuff thrown in) and itll sound totally awesome.

I don't think music theory is boring because I absolutely love music theory. Though, personally, I am a jam musician. It's really nice to know music theory and be educated and whatnot.

Actually, theory of the guitar IS just as developed. The guitar has been around about the same amount of time as the piano, believe it or not. I found this out from a presentation I did for a class my first year in college. As far as theory goes, you learn the rules, but remember there is a reason its called THEORY! Only the basic principles of music are set in stone, the rest can be modified and changed depending on the notions of the composer. Theory is always evolving, though the theory you will learn in college is just the basic principles as based on piano. Why do you think theory professors play the piano?

because if u play piano you can practically play anything else

nothing could be further from the truth. So ok, you can play the piano in your sleep, but you won't be able to play the guitar worth s**t. The only thing is, if you can play piano, you can read music for anything else, but you have to be able to get your fingering down. Its a lot harder to switch than you would think.

I think even though theory is boring, its still very usefull. I'm self taught too and started playing by ear because I found reading music to be harder.
But I find it easier to play by ear when it's supported by some theory such as scales and stuff.

Haha, I need to get back into learning theory. I've been slacking off completely on my music recently, sigh. sad

But yeah, I don't think theory is a neccessity, but it does give you a lot more to work with (or against!) when you know what kinda stuff you can deal with.
It's definately boring, and for me personally, very hard to grasp. But I think in the long run, it will help a lot.

i find it boring to learn things like notes and crap..which im still working at after 3 years for some reason but when it comes to scales and modes im all ears, what ever it takes to get better at writing songs,
however the more theroy i lear the more i base songs around that knowledge which kind of bugs me now, it might all make more sense but just going with what fits and throwing in really cool licks out of nowhere is a really cool thing, i know hundreds of scales and chords and i must say im pretty fast [so ive been told] but when it comes to reading notes, some kid who puts in 10 minutes a day that has been plaing for three months is probasbly as good as me in that section.

I love theory. When I'm looking over it I turn it into something fun. I also had this weird a** music teacher teach music theory and he had it on this bored and he individually had someone and do it. It was hilarious 'cause we teased each other XD. I miss band T crying T.
