the very nature of mankind makes it that without rules, it will be very chaotic indeed. everyone would do what they wanted, things wil be stolen, streets will become dirty, and much more. some people hate laws, others find them important for the order. i even have a example of what can happen when you disobey the law. even though it is from game. elder scrolls 4 oblivion. you know, oblivion is a matter apart from normal games. it has a realistic community and has its laws. and guards who enforce them.

at the very beginning of the game i found the prices for items such as swords, potions, and armour quite high. i could not afford them. then i thought of a idea. what if i just picklocked the door of that weapons shop at night, and just get that sword i want for free? nobody would notice it! so i did. and it got worse. soon, i found myself picklocking every shop in town at night. i knew the patrol ways of the guards, so i did not have to fear them. after a while i got a lot of stolen goods. excellent quality swords, armour, potions etc... and all for free! but deep in my heart, i knew that what i was doing was wrong.

one day while i was riding around in the enormous world of tamriel on my stolen horse( i had to steal one...) after some adventure i decided that i needed some rest. so i stopped by the nearest inn. i went in. there i saw a guard. not having talked to someone for ages, i went up to the man and started a talk. but when he turned around he said with a hard voice: ´your spree has come to an end thief! since you cant pay your bounty you must go to jail, and we will take all your stolen goods back to their rightful owners´ i paniced. i could´t hand in all my stolen goods! it took ages of hard work to get them! so i resisted the arrest. ´then pay with your blood!´ the guard said. he drawed his sword and started attacking me. i knew that a close combat fight would mean my death. so i rushed out of the inn, the guard still following me, i saw that i had no chance to escape, my horse was too far to reach alive. so nothing else than fighting the guard rested me. i drew my bow and arrows. i started running backwards while shooting arrows at the heavily armoured guard. he was fast, but not fast enough for my nimble agillity. i fired a dozen arrows at him. sometimes he dashed and slashed me with his sword. but i had potions.

after a while, he fell on the ground. dead. i couldn´t believe it. my thief instincs called, and i dashed towards his dead body. i started to collect his stuff. lot of gold, his armour, his sword, his helmet...i took everything. then at last i stopped. and looked at the poor guys body. undone of his clothes and armour, he only had a his shorts on. ´what have i done... i killed a guard... a innocent man who was just doing his job...´ i glanced one last look on his almost naked body. lying there on the ground. dead. then i started looking around me. what? where am i? what is this place? i was lost. after a day or two(game time) walking aimlessy around, i found a city. upon entering it, all the guards seem to reconize me from the wanted posters. i dashed to the stables, took a horse, and made a run for it. after a long chase, i found myself deep in a forest. a while later i found a inn in the middle of nowhere. i entered. no guards. the owner smiled at me. ´hello traveler. you must be exhausted. why dont you take one of my rooms? it costs you only 10 gold coins.´ the man didn´t seem to know my criminal background. i accepted his aid and paid the 10 coins. i then went upstairs to my room. being tired of the chase, i inmmediatly went for the bed.

when i later woke up, a shady figure was looking at me. ´hello there. i am from the dark brotherhood. we saw what you did. you have killed a innocent soul. cold blooded and without much remorse. you seem a potential recruit for our guild. we are a guild of killers, murderers, and thieves. but if you join, you will see that we are much more than that. if you are interested in joining, go southeast of here. there you will find a man named richtie. kill the old man and you can join us.´ he then disappeared in nowhere. the dark brotherhood is interested in me?! if i join them, my chances to get caught are likely lower. i´l do it. i will kill ritchie. and join the guild.

and that is my story. if i only had obeyed the laws, then this was never happend. i had to go to jail when that guard caught me, not kill him. you see now people? laws are not made to be broken. because then you will be in big trouble. laws are made to mantain peace. if you obey them, you are okay.

thanks to all who took their time to read this.

Even though this example is from a game, i understand what you're trying to get across. I agree that many laws are put in place to stop terrible things from happening. Whilst there are a lot of good honest people in the world, there are just as many who will take advantage of people/ possesions and cause mindless destruction more than they do now if there were no laws.

Some laws do seem very over the top, but a lot are relevent and needed. Like speeding for instance, people commonly complain about the laws that restric it, but they are needed. The only thing that upsets me is the difficulty in getting people who do horrible things tried and convicted in court, especially when it comes to things such as domestic violence and sexual assault.

Now I've just read it. It's an interesting story, I guess. I've always wanted to play that game if only my computer could run it.

I do see your point. Laws and rules are made because not everyone sees that being moral is neccessary to maintain order in society, like how you were at the beginning of the game. Without it, society would fall apart.

I had pretty much a similar thing happen in the game Fable, for XBox. I was playing, stealing things, killing people who I'd lured away from the guard's sight, etc. There is a part where you are given a choice to kill someone very very close to you and have full power and reign, or you let them live and get the same thing.

My char. was exceedingly evil, and having fun, (it's a game, right?) I killed the person. Right at this moment, my 5 year old son walked into the room and asked me bluntly, "What exactly do you think you're doing?" I answered, "Playing my game. Let mamma finish, okay?" Never took my eyes off the screen. My kid walks up to me, takes the controller from me, and turned off the tv. He then proceeded to lecture me about how killing people was wrong, and you could go to prison, and you would be a bad person.

I was so ashamed that I'd sat there and done all that, even if it WAS a game. He is innocent, and in his innocence, saw me doing bad things. And he let me know that he didn't like it. I felt absolutely horrible for DAYS about this!

Now I'm still playing my evil guy, but I look at things a little bit differently now with the game. ( I no longer play that one when he's home, unless it's my good guy.)

So I can relate to where your'e coming from. But, I could just be more sensitive than most people,(I know I am...) and you could all think that I'm crazy LOL!

Now, if I could just get this through to my kid brother that anarchy won't work, I'd have it made!

Gosh, I want to buy this game now.

Ever considered being a saleperson? xp

I used to steal from stores a lot, and I never thought of it as me doing wrong until I stopped, and realized what I really was doing.

I enjoyed not having to pay for things. It's just like a drug dealer, they can make $1000, or more in one night without having to bust their a**, and be nice to customers. It's what you get from so little work that gets you addicted to the illegal activity.

TL/DR.

But anyway - just because some laws are necessary does not mean that all laws are just. Is there really any legitimacy in a law that says Mickey Mouse is still under copyright even though it has been almost 100 years since he was created? Congress makes new laws extending copyright every year

As for speed limits - sure, you need _some_ speed limit - but does it really make sense for it to be only 65 or even only 55 on some roads? A low speed limit creates danger by making it so there is a large difference in speed between people who do follow the law vs those that don't.

Raising the speed limit on the interstates from 55 to 65 increased safety overall - for one thing, people who wanted to go fast no longer stuck to back roads which really _were_ unsafe at fast speeds - and also this way there is less speed difference between people who go the speed limit and people who go faster - even the speeders will go slower because there is a reference point that they can say "i won't go more than 10 over" instead of just going as fast as they want because even 10 over is unreasonably slow.

A faster speed limit also increases the chance of losing control. Not every car is designed to go beyond a reasonable speed. Also, no matter what the speed limit people will always go however fast they feel, whether it's 30mph, or 100mph.

What if they raised it to 80mph(as they recently have on highway 10 in Texas), that means the people who think "I won't go more than 10 over" will be driving around 90mph. What if something sudden happens, and they have to make a quick lane change? They're going to roll. What if something pops out in front of them, it'll take even longer for them to react, and be able to apply the break.

If you're going to increase the speed limit you have to increase the knowledge of automobile safety, first.

Also, concerning the copyright. What if you made a design that is making billions of dollars, would you want someone to be able to take it, and portray it as their own work, or you spend countless hours making a design, and someone copies it, and claims it as their own? I didn't think so.

After like 100 years? I've by then already made enough money out of it and it should be free for others to build on. I never said allow them to portray it as their own work - but to make work BASED on it. My point is, the legal reason for copyright is to provide an incentive to create - and ANY extension after the fact does not justify that.

I don't think their should be an expiration date on a copyright. The author/creator can take off the copyright anytime they'd like, though. So it's solely based on the author/creator.

But why _should_ it be? What gives the author the right to say "you can never write anything with my characters in it FOREVER"? What about after the author's dead?

What if Shakespeare's stuff was still under copyright? We wouldn't have West Side Story because it would violate the copyright on Romeo & Juliet, we wouldn't have 10 things i hate about you because it would violate the copyright on taming of the shrew,

What if all the fairy tales that Disney ripped off had still been under copyright? Some had expired only recently.

If not for copyright expiration you would never have heard of It's A Wonderful Life - it was a failure in its own time and only became so well-known now because all the networks picked it up after its time was up (ignoring for now the later tangled music/sountrack problems)

I was going to address the death issue, and use Shakespeare as an example in my last post. xd

Well I'm going to contradict myself. The copyright should end once the original creator is deceased. Why? Because the creator can no longer take any responsibility for their work.

I didn't take into consideration the death of the creator til recently.

Should impersonal entities like companies, states, etc, be able to hold copyright? How do you expire them then, since then the "creator" is immortal - does it expire with the original actual author's death? the deaths of all people originally involved in a production?
