Ever done it? I've been tempted to write some Samus Aran fanfiction, or Legend of Zelda fanfic, but I've never wrote any before. I want to be true to the characters and dont' want to disrespect them by writing bad fanfiction.

I write alot none fanfiction and fanfiction the most important thing is keeping the character IN character. Its best to have beta readers for this purpose who are very familiar with the characters.
Beta Readers = A writers best friend

I agree, beta readers are extremely helpful. As for writing fanfiction, every good fanfic writer had to start somewhere, so don't feel bad if your first few attempts aren't perfect. That's what con crit is for. To help you improve.

Thanks for the tips and the link. I'll check it out as soon as I get more free time! ^__^ If I ever do get around to writing a fanfic for a video game, I'll post it up here in little chunks.
Anyone else write fanfiction for a video game?

If you are afraid of doing the character injustice, you can also set a fanfic in the world and use your own characters. I am doing that for my Silent Hill fanfic, and the Fatal Frame one I started up a while ago. I'll tell you how it works?
Beta-readers rock, too. I've got a few, and they like the ideas I've stormed up so far... Now I just have to write it. hehe...

What's a beta-reader? People who read your first draft and help edit?

Beta readers, as explained earlier, are people who are blatantly honest about your work and are not afraid to tell you it sucks to save you embarasment. They read your work before anyone else gets to see it. Very useful people.

They read your work before anyone else gets to see it. Very useful people. Not entirely accurate A beta reader performs similar tasks to an editor, someone who will give your work the once over and check for errors. There are several different levels of beta reading, ranging from a quick spell and grammar check to a full plot and characterisation analysis. In short they check over your work to make sure the characters stay in character, things make sense and flow nicely. As well as checking the standard editorial stuff for a story. This is something I know about because I am a beta reader for various fan fictions.

I wrote a few fanfictions of FFIX a few years back but they sucked...horribly!
Now I have a drabble or two of SO3 online, but not more then that.
RP'ing is a good way to learn how to keep your characters IC, provided it isn't crack.

Haven't ever written fanfiction, but I have continued to roleplay characters from MMORPGs that I've stopped playing. I kept roleplaying my WOW character in the game setting after I stopped playing over IRC and things like that.
