I was flipping through the ads the other day, and I came across a Dove ad (for some cream or soap or whatnot...) and the thing that struck me the most was the rather...um...normal looking models! Their thing is campaignforrealbeauty.com, and it's this project where normal girls and women send in their pics in order to create a more realistic media image of what females look like. Pretty cool stuff! I've always been interested in fashion design, and I can't stand how women who are larger than a size 14 are only offered ugly clothes that only look good on skinny people! One thing I really want to do is start making my own designs, designed to look good on the *average* woman. And I'd make a point of using everyday people as models. So that's my little tangent. Check out the Dove site. I think I'll submit a pic of myself. Screw modesty, I know I'm hot. domokun

that's awesome.
it's nice to see a company encouraging normal-looking models and following through with it. a lot of the popular teen magazines will publish an article telling girls not to be anorexic and to be happy with yourself, and then surround that article with pictures of sticklike models dressed in barely-there clothes.

That's great!
I just got so annoyed that people in shows and comercials are, well, pretty!
Think of any commercial--beverage, shampoo, car, cereal--and think about what kind of people are in it. Beautiful people.
I haven't seen one ad that had an over-weight person, a person with acne, or any other 'flaw' that wasn't an example as a 'before' picture.
I'm glad Dove has shown that you can be over-weight, blad, or spotted with acne and still be proud of yourself.

I saw that too! I think its a great step towards erasing that skinny model cliche. Its really going to help women realize what true beauty is.

I have alot of respect for Dove because of those ads. It's really nice to see women being celebrated for their beauty even if they do not fit into the typical hollywood standard. I hope other business will follow Dove's example. 3nodding

While it's nice to see that Dove's portraying a healthy image of women, remember that their purpose is still to sell more than the competition. It's common for brands to push an idea of their product rather than the product itself --that is, women are beautiful no matter what rather than soap that will make your skin soft and desirable. Notice how the models on the website all have dewey, blemish free faces, despite their being obese, wrinkley, or freckled? Dove is still a company that sells cosmetic hygeine products for women that still enforce the need for a woman to look good. While I'm all for ladies having soft, silky skin if they want to, don't automatically buy into Dove's attempts to win over the hearts of fatties and ugly broads everywhere. Dove is a company that wants to sell you lotion and soap, and that is all. Plus, I bought their deoderant a few months ago and it sucked the big one.

hah i just read that and i literally laughed out loud. and... to tell you the truth, i sort of agree with you. even if i'd like to think that society's views of beauty are changing to include full bodied and wrinkly women.

Don't get me wrong, I do like seeing realistic women in ads; however, I still see it as just a ploy to get us to buy body wash.
