Ok I found out a little while ago that if you get a sex change, on your passport and your lience it stays that your were once and female or male depending on which one you were before. I think it's rather supid I mean in all sence of the word you have become the opposite sex, why should your photo I.D. Tell that you WERE this one but if you look I'm NOW this one. I find it stupid that you have to do that. Anyone got some ideas or a way to find out if this is still in effect.

I don't know why they do that...

The answer is probably here somewhere though.

It's a legal thing. It would be neccessary if the government wants to track down someone.

But in that sence I mean wouldn't it be easier just to change it legally, I mean I think it would be pretty easy to show that you were one or the other.

I guess you might be able to push for a law change, but it will probably be opposed, especcially by religious groups.

[[I understand and agree that it does seem a little pointless, but say if you comitted a crime whilst female and then had a sex change. Then the police would be trying to find a female, when you're actually a male now. I think this is why they put your sex change on your passport.]]

Religious groups have the whole "Chruch and State" deal Which would probabbly put them on the back burner.

To Thule_wil_rocketh: I see how that is but still that's were the legally change came in, I mean yeah so you tell you the government that yes you were female or male but now your this. Also I mean your probabbly going to want to change your name so just like in the name change the background of the person getting the change should be investagated.

Well why's that, I mean there people, they just believe that they were born into the wrong gender.

If I were to spend all of that money, go through all of that therapy, and suffer all of those trials, I would want my sex to be changed to the sex I changed to. I understand that there might be several legal reasons to put that they had a sex change, including those having to do with crimes, but it just doesn't seem all that fair. How would they even write that on the person's license? Like this?

M --> F or F --> M

I think that's silly. And not very fair.

they may need to know what you were known as before. its a bit weird if a name just appears out of no where with no history. what if your banned from the flying on an airline? they need to know who you were before.

im sure theres more reasons why its necessary aswell
national security is more important than being fairer on a petty issue of having a peice of history on your passport.

If we speak about sex changes we might as well bring up breast enlargement/reduction, eye lash implant, lypo suction, etc. Science is changing the human form.

I believe they just keep your origninal sex on your ID. I Though I don't know that one for sure. I didn't look up how they did it with the ID's.

Alright...this is a touchy subject.
Religiously, I can see why they wouldn't want to change the gender on "official" documents, such as passports/IDs/etc.
...But religion should have NOTHING to do with this.

Authority-wise, it would be hell of a lot easier to just list the sex change, instead of leave the original gender on the document.
Although, if you pull somebody over on the highway for speeding and run their ID, it might not ALWAYS come up that they were once male/female (before the surgery).
And if they were wanted for anything before hand, and had the sex-change say, in London (which is possible), then most easy-to-access records do the authorities no good anyway.
It's a long-shot...but remember that we ARE talking about the AMERICAN government here.
