"Tucked in beneath a wet, scraped leather casing a small notebook lies. It sits there, with a layer of dust corroding its once violently purple colour, without a single thumb print on it since it was last written in.

Nobody has touched this small journal. It sits there; untouched. It waits; untouched. The failures, the horrors, and the trumphs; untouched. This small book lays there, for anyone to peek in to its script. Yet it remains untouched.

As you lay your hands on it, though, you feel the coarse rollings of dust parse from the leather to gather in small bits of grime on your hands. A moment, a second, and you have this small book pried from its leather casing, with its yellow mildew pages open for you to gaze on them. At the top right of this journal's first page is the name "Marius".

Character History:

His life ended that day. The world around him slipped from his fingers as a pilum spliced flesh from bone, and spatha ripped apart his innards from his outtards. Red stains splashed from his red-robed body, colouring him a darker hue of blackened rouge from his hairs' tips down to his very toes. It was, and this is an understatement, a bloody death met out only to the most brutal barbarians.

Marius was not a barbarian. In fact, he and the ones who were around him at the time of his death were engaged against barbarians. It just so happened that an invisible creature had struck at him, and his squad, when he was in the forest not once, but four times, with only him surviving each encounter with the animal. His cohorts thought he was leading the barbarians to his troop by some signal and then allowing his fellow Romans die unheroic, dishonourable deaths.

Later Marius learnt that the invisible creature was a hollow. However, there was a grain of truth that came from his fellows after he took flight from his four encounters with the soul-eating creature. He had led the hollow to his dead comrades. So, too, did he attract the hollow to his commander's base of operations where, just after he lay dead in a pool of his own blood, Marius was accompanied to the afterlife with those who had just killed him.

With the chain attaching himself to his body broken, and the hollow-creature bearing down upon him, he found his afterlife rather disharmonious. The invisible creature took shape and it appeared to be a giant shewolf, like the one who nursed Romulus and Remus before the founding of Rome, and wore a giant mask that mimicked that of a wolf. It was.. a creature that, as stated earlier, became known as a "hollow" when he was released from the earthly realm by a passing shinigami. It would suffice to say he was saved by that shinigami. If he did not have that woman in black robes slide on by, kill the masked shewolf, and then press into his brow the bottom of her single edged blade, he wouldn't be in soul society right now.

In 53 BCE Marius had died. He was, as written above, sent off to Soul Society before he fell victim to a rampaging hollow. Once in Soul Society he found himself hungry, a sign he found out later that hinted at his higher than normal level of reiatsu, and in search of where--nevermind what--he was. Before long he had collapsed from his hunger and was taken in by the house that he had fallen in front of him.

Clan Ugu, the family that occupied the house he collapsed in front of, took him in. They employed him as a butler, at first. Eventually, however, his martial talents, ability with a spatha, and his unerring will to improve himself, proved that he wasn't suited for the domicile existence of being a domestic servant. Rather, the family realized, he'd be a great addition to Soul Society's military divisions.. the thirteen squads.

The clan, at the time, had lost its main heirs. The first family, the one who had the head of the clan, lost its heir during a mission that the heir was on. The second eldest in the first family also died, but this time it was because of a training accident at the academy. Clan Ugu's finances, too, fell into ruin during this time. Marius was an obvious person to adopt into the clan. He was a fighter, loyal, and prepared for harsh circumstances. So the clan adopted him, placed him as its heir, and put him into Soul Society's academy to be taught the skills of the shinigami.

To be continued (pending permission given by Dischord/Paradox).
