It was grand, today and everyday. Lost in the woods of his own land, his territory, his world. He was gone in the caverns that held timeless tales of horror and dismay, yet he would march right into them and roll about in the dust and decay that lingered within. Oh, the feelings one had when they sat in their domain, capable of calling it his or her own, able to do whatever they wanted with the land--let it live or die, keep it submersed in wolf feet or untouched.
He yowled into the air, fog layered on the earth and covering miles of the land. It was day brake, the sun just creeping into the sky, giving the earth a shallow brightness. Shadow's now danced in the woods and the call of single birds just rising from their own keep filled the air. Pine tree's scaled the skies, and from below, so close to their roots, crawled the woodland creatures, and Catalyst. The Alpha male to them all.
He stretched, standing just close enough to the den to hear the echo from bird wails or his very own groans of fatigue. Waking and moving his limbs as he did now refreshed him, get him started for the day. A meal was in order, yet at this moment, he was parched beyond compare. So--to the river he must go.
As he walked, moor like terrain keeping him on his toes and weary of muddy ground, Kalia's image crept onto the foundation of his thoughts. Where was she and why was she constantly away from their lands these days?

Kalia growled in frustration. Where were all of the lone wolves? It was much earlier in the day than it was normally when she went home to her packlands, but she had been searching for days and had so far found nothing. Not even so much as a single fresh scent. Was this place really that haunted? But surely not everyone could know of the story?
Shaking her head, she walked stiffly back onto her lands. Nothing had gone right in her life since all of her children had turned into rebels. One of them was here in the packlands, but she didn't bother him much. He wasn't so much of a traitor, and Kirra seemed to be quite fond of him. Respecting the female's wishes, she had kept her son on the lands and hadn't chased him off.
Padding farther into her territory, she picked up the scent of her mate. For once, she felt comforted by the thought of having him around. They had gone over some little rocky places together, but things seemed to be better now.
Whisking her tail to the side, she bounded over the landscape, following Catalyst's scent. Eventually she saw him moving along, heading for the river it seemed. She yipped to let him know she was there and approached quickly. The day's let down, however, remained on her mind and she couldn't shake her feelings of disappointment and slight anger.
"No one around today," she commented. "I went looking out in the freelands but I didn't find any wolves." She sighed. "I'm beginning to think this place really is cursed."
And oh was it ever.

Her voice, hard like whisky raw yet so smooth, like the flow of the dark waters. He turned, gaze falling on his female companion as she approached, body moving swiftly over the rugged land. Her features were sagged, months of turmoil catching up to both of them, though also held a heavy amount of distress. He watched her body wriggle towards him, and took initiative steps towards her, bumping his moist nose against her shoulder.
'Oh, I know.' He breathed. 'But we mustn't give up, not yet. We have time love, we have time.' Settling back on his haunches, Catalyst smiled and murmured into Kalia's fur, eyes shut now, softly fluttering with the touch of each soft follicle.
It was a shame though, that they'd yet to find wolves in either their own lands, or the free ones. He didn't often like to resume to myth, however with the tale of his land being haunted, there was always a lingering ponder that possibly, said curse was brought upon both himself and his mate--making every attempt at overall happiness a pointless one.
Turning slightly, body moving away briskly from his mates, her warmth still trailing on his neck, her smell so new to him again.
'I was just going to the river, why not take a break and have a drink--go for a hunt. Searching for members can wait...' Smiling, he spun on his heels, completely now, and motioned in the direction he once was trotting upon.

Kalia nuzzled her mate as he bumped his nose against her shoulder. He made her feel better nowadays. He really did. And she was glad for that. It hadn't been fun for her when they had been in the midst of their breaking points, ready to lunge at the other by the cue of a simple mis-statement. But now.. it all seemed better and it took away the disappointment of the lack of members in their pack.
Nodding and moving to sit beside him, she sighed. "But how much time?" she wondered aloud. She didn't want to admit it, but she simply had to: she was old. She was ending her prime and she knew Catalyst couldn't be that far behind her. She even forgot who was older, she or him. It was sad, really, and a sensitive topic for her. "We don't have all the time in the world," she continued, attempting to keep her words light both for the sake of herself and him.
Shaking her head, she sighed once more. Things seemed so complicated now that she was an alpha. When she had decided to take on the role, she hadn't expected this much worry and disappointment to follow her around every day.
Blinking up at him and coming out of her thoughts, she listened to his words with perked ears. A drink sounded nice. She'd only eaten a small rabbit for breakfast and thus far hadn't gotten anything to drink. Nodding to him, she replied, "Sure, that sounds nice. I think a break is exactly what I need."
Rising to her paws, she stretched out her forelegs and shook out her fur. Feeling like today might turn into a good day despite her uneventful morning, Kal whisked her tail and trotted beside her mate towards the river. When they had reached their destination, she didn't hesitate to go straight to the edge of the bank and quench her thirst. After that, she felt refreshed and settled down upon her belly.
And, despite all of her attempts to keep her mind clear, she couldn't help but think about how poorly she was at being an alpha. She frowned.

Catalyst murmured softly to his mate, moving away from her as she sat and pondered on miscellaneous quarries. It wasn't at all sensitive to the male, the object of age, ever since he'd surpassed his ability to keep up with the younger folk.
His paws moved briskly over the earth, torn and brittle under each weighted step taken. He would have replied to her, to all her questions before arriving to the river, but what could be said other then; 'It's ok, it's alright. We'll get by...' Catalyst was sure Kal would not have appreciated being treated as a child. He'd realized this long ago now, that they were equal in more then just rank--she was his mate, and was chosen for she shared so many of his qualities, both good and bad.
Watching his love trot to the bank, lapping at the water with such eagerness, such desire--he too felt it instantly, but not for the liquid, but for Kalia herself. She'd gotten old; retaliating back to her previous inquires, and yet forever held a sense of youth in her. When around Catalyst, she would many times open up to him, naked in a sense. Her feelings exposed like the pale underbelly that was her own. She was delicate, like all other females; no matter how rough her exterior appeared.
He waited, slacking behind as she drank and drank, then finally plopped herself on her belly with a long frown. This angered and disappointed Catalyst, in the most humorous way possible. He approached the river, just close enough to Kalia to send a waft of air past her. Dipping into the cool, running stream, he drunk away till even he could hear the sway of the gathered water in his gullet. Then, without so much as a breath, turned and sat on his haunches, just in the spot he'd sipped.
'Why,' he began, a disagreeing tone resting within. 'Do you appear so down, love? Has our trip to the river been that horrid?' His own features dropped, with a tremor of sarcasm. He was playing with her, rolling onto his side and whining soft, clowning about his mate like a foolish child--
But who was to say it wasn't his right to too open up to his mate. If he could not achieve that much, then what was there he could?

Kalia delved deep into her own thoughts. Why had she been so down recently? Was it the lack of members and activity in their pack besides the sudden appearance of their son? Or perhaps it was the fact that she was realizing that she was growing old and was beginning to leave the prime of her life. That alone could keep her depressed for days, but that didn't seem to bother her so much as something else..
As he brushed past her, sending a waft of his delicious scent her way, she smiled slightly and melted. She knew, just as he did, that she often opened up and revealed her softer side when in his presence. It was only natural. After all, they were mates and seemed to share a deeper bond than most. It wasn't just power or lust that drew them to each other.. it was something else, something that couldn't be explained in words. It was simply understood by both.
Her ears perked forward as she heard his soothing voice, that rough sound that she grew to adore. Flicking her tail behind her, she nudged him then leaned herself against him once he had rolled onto his side.
Grinning, she pawed at him. "Oh I was nearly dying!" she teased, licking at his face. "I'm surprised I managed."
Shaking her head, she moved on to more serious matters. "I think it's just that... I don't know. It just seems like nothing has gone right for us ever since Echo and Ophelia..." She cut herself off, not wanting to really think about her two traitorous daughters. They had left her in her time of need, when she really needed support from those around her. Now they were off goodness knows where doing goodness knows what with goodness knows who. It honestly frustrated her.
"I can't stop thinking of why they would have done what they did. It couldn't have been our fault...?" No, not their fault. It couldn't have been. It was their children and whatever other wolves they had hung around with that gave them those horrible ideas. Ridiculous.

Catalyst groaned. Kalia still looked beyond aggravated with an inward battle. Why were things so complicating now.
Shoveling his nose beneath her fur, he sighed and listened to the voice that had not been taken in since--god knows when. It's misshapen tone watered the worry, the dismay and the distress in the male, his eyes shut tightly and ears flattened in thought. She was so saturated with worry, regret, and turmoil. All things that did not do well with both Alphas.
He turned, moving gently under the mass of his mate and rolled to his belly so as to speak towards Kalia and not up to her. His fur bristled slightly, her words a reminder of their past.
'Do not blame yourself, Kalia.' He snarled, the thought of his daughters, just the thought, sending him on a rampage. 'It is neither your fault, nor mine. We were parents, only wanting what was best for our children--those rebels...monsters!' His voice cracked, nose cringing in a low, nearly inaudible growl.
Echo and Ophelia. The two twins with possibilities to do nothing but start havoc. He wondered what they were up to now, what they were doing with themselves. Knowing Ophelia, though not knowing her at all, Catalyst figured she would be pregnant, however mate less. And as far as Echo went, he hadn't figured out that Kalia snipped her daughter clean out of her senses, so she must be in the same boat as Ophelia, if not worse off.
Body tensed, a constant reminder that he was definitely in a state of utter disgust, fighting inward battles against his own thoughts, quarries, wonders. And where was his son, Talamar. He was most likely with Kirra in some den crying over Talamar's infertility to spread his 'soldiers'. Catalyst had always found his son a bit odd, so that was probable in his mind.
Turning his head slightly, in a tilt almost, the male sighed, ears flicking back and flattening; this time out of anguish. He was truly at a loss. 'Kalia....' he whispered, rolling again onto his side, this time inching forwards and crossing his neck on the back of her own. 'I love you...Let's forget about them, for now...they are gone, we are here. It's time to start fresh.'
A gentle whine rippled into the air, his tail coiling about his thigh as he brought his head up and down the side of Kalia's neck. Her smell was intoxicating, her every breath hypnotic. She was simply the everything to him, and as of that moment, just because his son and daughters wanted to leave, abandoning where they came from, who they came from, and all respects to their parents, he would no longer go on dwelling over it. The past was the past, and both Kalia and Catalyst were more then willing to open up a door for change.
'Children are pains...' he stumbled over his words, and in a grave manner, he continued on, 'I'm so sorry your first litter was of the worst circumstances...'

The female alpha grumbled and nuzzled herself into Catalyst. It was nice to just sit and relax with him like she was now, but she knew this wasn't what they were supposed to be doing. They had a pack to run. Although it was a rather small and insignificant pack, she knew that they should both be doing something to help out that situation. She sighed, letting his delicious scent waft into her nose and soothe out all of her frazzled nerves.
But Kalia looked over at her mate immediately as he snarled at her to forget about their recent litter, that it wasn't her fault they had turned out the way they had. She figured it couldn't be completely their fault, but she couldn't help but feel a bit.. responsible. Was it her lack of discipline to them as puppies? Or had it been something else, something she hadn't seen or taken care of properly? There was no way for her to know, and that frustrated her above all else. What had she done wrong?!
Growling to herself, similar thoughts ran through her mind as through the male's. Their two daughters couldn't be doing very well. She had, regretfully, left Echo severely scarred emotionally and physically. There was no way she could be possibly doing well. And her twin, Ophelia. She had been more of a direct rebel when it had come to them leaving the pack. Echo had simply disappeared, but their other daughter had done some verbal fighting with Catalyst. And she didn't even want to think about Talamar, going away then crawling back as he had. Damn those rats. They were worthless. What kind of pups left their parents like that, without even trying to make things better? But then, she supposed, couldn't she have done something to help the situation.
She growled again. There just seemed to be no right answer to all of her problems.
Yet the gray female loosened up slightly as Catalyst touched her and whispered sweet things to her. He always seemed to know how to make her feel better. Start fresh? She figured he meant puppies. Part of her wanted more puppies, as it was just natural for a female to feel that way, but from past experiences she was second-guessing herself as to her capability of raising a good litter.
But suddenly she froze, her eyes widening. Catalyst had said that he was sorry her first litter had been brought up under such horrible situations. But the thing was...
"Not the worst," she blurted. Unknowingly, she continued. "There was--" She caught herself. But had she said too much for it to simply slide?
Looking away, she awaited what would happen next. Hopefully her mate would just shrug it off, let it go..

Her voice was distant, her body tensing and her eyes wandering as she spoke out against his own statement. He was...well, more or less confused at her words, and retorted with a sheepish laugh.
'Kalia, what do you mean?' The laughter continued, but only subsided as her features became stiff, and her head turned away from him. Consciously, Catalyst's senses perked, and he became aware of a few things.
First, his mate wasn't a virgin when they'd met. She'd seemed so, and even managed to trick the male into believing she had a horrid past and he was her first love--lies.
Secondly, she was another wolfs toy. Not only did his pride crush, but inwardly he felt cheated.
'......Did you mate before me? Kalia?' No, his mind hummed, numbing away these sickening, gut lurching feelings. She couldn't have, not with another wolf.
Had she ever mentioned this? No matter how he tried, pulling away at first, hackles rising and lips twitching, his mind would not stop clicking. Thoughts, one after the other, began popping into his head. Over all, he summed up the fact that Kalia heard his sob stories and yet kept her own hidden...for this long.
He whined, a reaction to simple and undeniable defeat. She'd allowed him to crack, open wide and spill out his life to her. He'd grown soft about the edges, tender and weak about this female, and yet all the while she held her guard, keeping her wall erect, strong.
How could she have used him.....she said she loved him.
'...Why...' He watched as Kalia lay, his body now high on his toes, her shadow mocking him and playing in the sunlight. He snarled. His imagination worked at his patients...his sanity.

Kalia had set a trap for herself. There was no way out. She had said too much, catching his curiousity and making him question her. Now he seemed even more tense than her, lots and lots of ideas popping into his head most likely. There wasn't any escape for her now. She'd have to tell him everything or risk losing him forever. But how would he react to her story?
At the flat-out question of had she ever mated before him, her ears fell back in shame. She should have told him before. But now it was too late.
"....Y-yes," she whispered, her eyes cautiously wandering back up to look at him. She was afraid she might see some horrible monster, driven over the edge by the possibility of her being a complete liar. Her fears were realized as the gray female saw him move away from her, his body rigid and his lips curling up in slight snarl. He couldn't..
Attempting to hold her ground against his rage, she tentatively continued. "It was just once!" she exclaimed, as if saying that would make everything better. But it wouldn't, a voice whispered to her.
"It was just.. Catalyst.. I didn't think it mattered. I--please..." she stammered, finding her courage faultering before him. His movements, that raging gleam in his eyes, his fangs shining threateningly at her.. she had seen it all before. Kal didn't want to relive all of the horrors of her past. She had to do something before she became more deeply scarred. But what?
"Catalyst! How... how do you think I got my blind eye?" she asked, seemingly out of the blue. But, in her mind, it all made sense. He would learn soon enough where this all came from.

Her voice, tantalizing, working his very last nerve. She had lied to him, this is what it came to, and her lies were what poised the demon in him.
He watched her, stammer and blink, wonder and fear all at once as if she played them all, every emotion in her, on one filthy slate. It was disgusting, her voice now, even as a few minutes passed. Her tone lost its quality, its motion...she was afraid now, and trying to make up for what had happened long ago--as if blathering would make it all go away.
She motioned towards him, eyes worried and features drooping with a sigh of distress. He could feel that warmth he felt a moment before dwindle, and finally it was gone all together. He was now more upset then forgiving, and with his own, dazed eyes locked on her own, he spoke aloud, ears flicking back and flattening against his head.
'Once is too long Kalia, you lied to me. I spoke my drama, my horrors. I laid them out for you, and here you stand, trying to make it all better with a few, pitiless words. I don't care how you got your eye, I don't care how this mate might have treated you--then is the past, Kalia. You kept that past from me...'
His pause jerked him further away, eyes blinded. It was a reaction, possibly far too much, but he wanted to leave her, relieve himself from her presence if not for a day. He snarled, lips parting, daring her to approach.
'Liar.' His body wretched, heels spinning, fur flying. He sped off, in the opposite direction of her. All their lives together he'd shared every secret with her, and now she had the nerve....
Something this important....she lied.

Kalia trembled beneath the male's great temper. She didn't understand while he could be so angry over this... it had all been in the past and it shouldn't have mattered to him. But she could tell that he was taking this seriously, perhaps too seriously, by the way that he shook with fury.
And it seemed that her words to him went unheard. He called them pitiful, just worthless words that barely reached his ears. Her attempts at explaining things to him were futile. He didn't want to listen. He thought she was a liar because she had kept a secret the fact that she had had a litter with a wolf before him. Still, though, she didn't understand why it mattered. He had had a litter before her, hadn't she? So why was he making such a big deal out of this?
Frustrated, confused, fearful, and lost all at the same time, the gray female lowered herself completely to the ground. Though she knew it would make no difference, it was just instinctive to make herself as small as possible before any sort of danger.
"Catalyst--" But he was gone. She lay there, pressed to the ground, having only his scent lingering in his place to remind her where she was. Everything else was simply blank. Her life. It was over. Without him, she felt devastated and alone. Without him, she wasn't even alive.
Like a deer caught in headlights, she lay there, still. The fact that he was gone didn't completely sink in until about an hour later.
Blinking, she rose slowly to her paws. Her life was over. It was time for her to become a ghost. Forever haunting, forever forgotten. She turned around and rushed quickly away. Nothing was waiting for her.

His throat ached, body throbbing as he took every lunging step forwards, unsure of his destination--unsure of it all.
His surroundings had, coincidently, changed from his meeting up with Kalia to now. Everything a bit different, everything a bit deceiving. His kicking was fierce, and as he sped on, he became unsure, wearier.
She was distant now, far from him, he far from her. They were apart now, and would be for some time. It seemed they'd fought hours ago, and he'd been running for the equal to that. His breath wasn't caught, his chest did not heave. He was content with running, and running, till his legs conked out.
Consciously, he pondered whether or not to run back, if fleeing from his mate and their problem would only make things worst if he kept on. He shook his head briefly and grumbled, his body pacing itself ever so slightly.
What was there to return to? Now was too late of a time to turn back.
