Night was becoming an earlier spectacle as winter approached. Tell tale signs laid in the frosted morning grass, the naked trees, and the colder days. Soon snow would be upon the land and the rivers would soon become frozen over. Tonight was especially dark, with only the light from the thin sliver of a waxing cresant dancing upon the canopy of both pines and deciduous trees.

“I don’t like this at all…Lera, this isn’t safe!” came the husky voice of a large male wolf. His fur was thick, ready for winter, but still retained its dark agouti markings. Eyes of ice and paws with trailing fur would give hints of his Nordic descent. He was strong, fit, and on the younger side of a wolf’s life, about four years old. He spoke to his companion, an older female whose fur had practically become entirely white, not by age, but genetics. Although she was older, about 6 years, which could be told by the numerous scars all over her body.

The pair were traveling together side by side, with the older she wolf in the lead. It was apparent that she knew exactly where she was going. “Stop your whimpering, Volk! You know we don’t have time to go anywhere else.” The pair had reached the fringes of the Outriders territory, the alien wolf scents made the male’s hair stand on end, his brows furrow, and his lips curl in a slight snarl. However, Leradien, the elder wolf was calm; after all, she didn’t need scents to tell her that many wolves lived here…

It was a chilly, dark night. The kind of night that made his teeth chatter- even though one might have observed that coming from the north, he should have been used to such temperatures. Just another thing his father was sure to scoff at later- and with a sigh, the small figured Gareth groaned, and cut out from between the trees and into the wide grasslands. He was looking for Mozelle. She was probably out hunting- but given the cold night, he was unable to keep his feet still long enough to sleep.

He’d thought earlier on he might stop by and see how his cousin was doing. Apparently Cassidy was expecting pups anytime now- but he’d gotten embarrassed about not having seen her sooner and ran away. What would Jaden think? His best friend’s grandchildren were arriving, and he couldn’t even muster up the courage to visit Cassidy. Phib had offhandedly mentioned that they seemed to be strong- Amelie had felt one of them kick, and it had been the source of much random delight for most of the afternoon. But with any meeting pertaining to his father- Gareth felt more at ease skirting away as soon as possible rather then enjoying the happy moments.

There was a sudden crackle in the forest, as a bird took flight. It’s wings slapped against the cold and crisp air, and the sudden sound of it brought an exhale of mist from his nostrils. Was someone... his hair stood on end in fear, and he started to slowly circle around himself. “You’re losing your mind.” He scolded himself, flecking his eyes back and forth. “A pack with over fifty wolves, and you’re freaking because you’re running into one.”

But this was a bit different. He was towards the outskirts now- and it was such an eerily dark night, it felt like it would have been more prompt for a wolf to have identified itself by now. Nervously he swallowed and shifted, calling out slowly. “H–Hello...?”

In the distance- a pair of shadows pooled from behind some trees. Or rather- one shadow, and the other burning white in the darkness. But it was the shadow that caught his attention. A large wolf- and most certainly, not from around here. He paused and flattened his ears, taking another careful step backward. What if it was that wolf again- coming to–?

“Gareth!” A soft voice spoke, and he felt a body bump against him. Gareth bunched himself up- and turned; but even as he saw Amelie standing there behind him with a silly grin on her face, he superimposed the large face of some demonic monster from the depths, and gave out a most terrified [and girlish] scream.

Amelie gaped and shook her head. “No no, Gareth, it’s me!”
He shrieked again and pressed himself against the wood. Amelie continued to smile, nervously wagging her tail and waiting for Gareth to recover. But in the back of her mind- she felt an odd ping from the individuals in the distance.

“Ssh, ssh. Gareth, it’s only me. Who were you of thinking it would be?”

He had spent a few days away from the packlands to clear his head and give himself some space. Ever since he had arrived here he had pushed his grief aside, cooping it up into a tiny ball in his stomach. However, as time passed that grief had begun to swell, consuming his entire being until he thought he might just die from it's weight.

The open space, the trees and the calm of being away from such a busy packlands had helped ease this feeling now and it was with a lighter mind that Gizmo returned.

Whether it was fate of mere coincidence he could not have returned at a better time.

At first he had thought it was just a dream, some trick his mind kept playing on him to lure him back into sadness. However as he drew closer to the borders of his new home the scent filled his nose with such strength that he was sure that this time it could be no dream. Gizmo rarely forgot a scent, especially one as important as the one he could smell now and the moment it captured him he knew. He just knew.

Mother... His whispered word misted in the cooling air beneath him, the dropping temperature telling the wolf that winter would soon be on it's way.

His heart pounded heavily in his chest and as his golden eyes glossed with a terrific joy he felt life stir within him again. It was this incredible joy that forced him to pause in his step and throwing back his head he uttered his howl - the call echoing from every tree for miles around.

He was here!

And the moment the howl ended the wolf tore off, a white streak darting beneath the trees. He had to get to her, he had to reach her and make sure he wasn't dreaming!

Mother! He barked the word sharply, ears perking forwards to see if he could hear any answer. MOTHER!

((sorry this is so jumpy D: ))

Miles away, before entering this territory, Leradien had noticed the thoughts of a seer, and had closed off her own mind immediately with the force that felt like an electrified wall. With a closed mind her senses became limited, but left her protected from any attack that could leave her vegetated and helpless on the ground. She had foreseen many wolves in this territory, but hadn’t predicted a certain wolf from her younger years appearing.

An eerie fog had started to crawl its way into the forest, weaving between trees and dampening the foliage with nightly dew that would frost with the early morning chill. Suddenly, a bird flew up from the ground; the sound of its frantically flapping wings alarmed the dark male. A ghoulish snarl of flashing white teeth and freezing eyes lit up the night and darted directly to a wolf that had spotted the pair. The stranger seemed spooked, and Lera quickly moved herself and Volk to the cover of a few dying blackberry bushes as another, a much lighter female, joined the male to find out what the alarm had been. Lera heard quiet talking among the two.

Volk’s stance was defensive, on guard, and alert. The fur along his back was raised and he growled quietly. Lera gave him a silent glare, and he relaxed slightly. Leradien was his most trusted companion, and all his loyalty lay within her. But he had a tendency to show his youth through inexperience, and so Volk quickly pressed against her.

MOTHER
The sound rang out through the quiet forest as dappled wolf quickly approached, heading straight for them! Volk quickly busted out of the frail blackberry bush to defend of the attacker. “Volk!” Lera barked, and the large male stopped his attacked and turned to his companion, his nerves frazzled. The she-wolf quietly made her way towards her agouti partner. They now stood between the pack members in an entirely awkward situation.

Or at least it was awkward to Volk. Lera had spotted Gizmo and her eyes immediately softened as his scent met her nose, bringing back both memories of joy and of pain.

The sudden sound of someone screaming mother in the dark even Amélie to make a slight yap of surprise. Gareth practically passed out, flailing his legs a couple of times as compulsive and random scenarios of doom flushed passed his mind. Although she sent an affectionate dock of the ear his way, Amélie turned her attention away from Gareth’s flailing once her own surprise had worn off. Something was going on with these strangers- and she now recognized the voice to have been Gizmo’s. She was not a cautious creature- and quickly she moved forward towards the group, slowing down only as she got closer for fear of misjudging their locations.

Gareth lay on the ground panting, before realizing that no one was paying any attention to him. He hadn’t been doing it for attention- but if no one was looking to him, then chances are that no one was attacking him either. He looked up suspiciously in time to see Amélie complete her run towards the others, and the large male suddenly bolt towards the dappled wolf he could scarcely identify as Gizmo. He was attacking! Gareth flinched and lowered his head.

But after a few moments there wasn’t the sound of any shrieking, and he apologetically lifted his head back up. Everyone was sort of standing still and looking at one another. The large male looked out of place- Amélie was wagging her tail, and the smaller male was watching one of the new comer’s fondly.

Gareth swallowed, and rose back to his feet and slunk to Amélie’s side. She had already spoke before he had arrived.

“Hello-“ She gentle spoke, and leaned forward, watching to see what Gizmo would do.

The scents of other wolves slowly filtered into his nostrils as the white and brown wolf drew closer. However he only realised that his mother did not travel alone when the form of another male approached.

Almost instantly the runty wolf came sliding to a halt, head lowered and ears flattened. He didn't want a fight, he just wanted to see his mum! A slither of a whine uttered from his throat and his back legs trembled as he tucked his tail up to press against his belly. What had he gotten himself into now?!

Then suddenly the leaves parted and revealed to him the vision of his mother, a spirit looming in the fog who seemed to pulsate with an otherworldly glow. This female, this seer, this wolfess who stared at him so fondly was the one he called mother and though she had not physically birthed him, his love of her was no less strong.

His eyes had left that of the male to catch her own softened gaze and it was only when Amélie spoke that he snapped out of his trance, golden eyes shining with unshed tears.

M-mother. He choked, hardly being able to believe she was there before him. It had been so long since he had seen her, spoken with her, and yet she was not travelling with Haku as he had hoped. No. Gizmo feared that the black and orange wolf was dead, just as so much of his past. Yet just seeing her here eased some of the heartache he had felt the past few days. What could he say? What could he possibly say to her?

He breathed deeply, trying to ease the strange weight forming in his chest and took the tiniest of steps forward. His eyes slipped again to the larger male, hoping that he wouldn't take offence to Gizmo's approach.

Mother... He sniffed, tail uncurling to wag slowly from side to side. I missed you... He fought against the urge to move in to nuzzle her in case it stirred anger in the other, his almond-shaped eyes never leaving the whitened form of the seer.
