During a recent debate, I tried to come up with somethings that homosexuals add a community. I wanted to open it up to more people. So how do you think having homosexuals in a community benefits the community?

Check out the list of famous gay people in the facts section. A Gay person in a community is the same as a straight one, ones sexual orientation has nothing to do with thir skills or value.

I think we add diversity and diversity is always a good thing. Especially when everyone who is diverse, get along. 3nodding

Tolerence, of course. And flair, in some cases.

I'm with Baka, Akurei, and Welcome. People of different orientations can give just as much to the community as straight people do, but the fact that there is acceptance and awareness of it benefits the entire town.

What don't they add is a better question.

And the answer would be babies.

This is understood, I was talking from a Public Relations point of view, how could we convince the straight community that homosexuals add to a community just like straight people?

You could, of course, look for a list of famous individuals who were gay or bisexual.

However, I think it would be more worthwhile to expose the question for what it really is: an appeal to the "minority tax." The idea being that homosexuals must somehow justify their presence, or else they do not belong in a community, whereas the same would never be applied to a heterosexual person on the basis of their orientation. This is a subtle and yet effective form of oppression, and it really needs to end. If you are asked this, I think the most appropriate response is "I am a human being and I do not need to justify myself any more than you do."

I don't kno wut to say to that. PEOPLE add to their communtity. Not homos. Not straight-os. I agree wit thee Electric Kool-Aid.

However, since I want to add to this topic and convince homophobe peoplez not to kill us off since we don't "contribute" (just cuz we don't add more to our already surplus population rolleyes ) i will say that we add awesome fashion sense to the world (props to the gay men 3nodding ), and rainbowz (PRIDE!!!), and generally just an overall feeling of magick and wonder in people's lives (you kno how many of homos work for Disney???).

Actually, there isone: Gay couples are more likely to want to adopt a child rather than produce their own.

I could be wrong, but eh.

I like you're way of looking at it. What I was trying to say is how to get people to actually WANT gays in a community as opposed to spurning them, because if people want you around and see what you contribute then they're less likely to be afraid of you and such but I see what you're saying and I agree with it completely. Hmmmm, will have to do more thinking.

On an individual level it doesn't matter if you're gay, bi, pan, whatever. It just depends on whether you're involved with your community in a positive or negative way. As a "social group" I think they/we add more variety and give the community a feeling (to outsiders as well as the citizens) of multi-diversity and acceptance.

Or something like that.

We're all people... It's really going to depend on personal motivation. Because there are some lazy a** straight folks out there who will sit on their bums all day and contribute zilch while a homosexual is out working their a** off, and vise-versa. Sexual orientation doesn't determine community contribution, motivation does.
