I made a german chocolate-esque cake with boiling water for leavening (that was an experiment, it worked well. Fairly light with a nice flavour.)

I frosted it with a chocolate infused frosting, don't really remember, but it was baking chocolate so it was quite strong and dark. THen I drizzled melted chocolate on that.

It was just a lot of chocolate basically...

Well I made a Southern Red Velvet cake for my grandmothers birthday on the first. I would have to say that was the best one so far.

I made a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for my Dad's birthday this year. It took me forever to make. I jostled it though during baking, so it came out with a big dip in the center. I just covered it up with frosting. smile

i made this chocolate vanilla marble cake for my nephew's birthday. He's obsessed with spiderman, so i made fondant spiderman decorations, with like, an intricate web, and spiderman's face, and little cutouts of spiderman, and such. It turned out really well, and my nephew, who was turning five, was REALLY excited when he saw it. It probably wasn't the best cake ever, but it was certainly the most appreciated!

I would have to say, my best cake was a brown sugar spice cake. I made them the first time as cupcakes and they came out really dense...they were good, but really dense. So the second time I made it, I made a regualr round 9" cake. I made it 3 layers and it had butter cream on teh outsides and cremcheese icing in the middle. When I was done (because presentation counts in my tech school) I sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, lightly.

My favorite cake is what my mom always called "hazelnut torte". It's... it's like sponge cake. Except you use ground up hazelnuts (or pecans, or other nuts I suppose) instead of flour. Then you put rasberry jam between the layers, and frost the whole thing with a thin layer of melted dark chocolate... *drools*

I'm actually making it today, as I'm holding a joint birthday party for my roommate and one of my boyfriends (his was last week, hers is next week). I shall post the recipe in the guild cookbook later smile

You should ganache it and then put a whip cream icing around the chocolate ganache!! That would make it even yummeher

I just put the recipe in the guild cookbook!

I don't eat dairy and neither do several of my friends, and as it stands the recipe uses no dairy (and no wheat, which is handy because the boyfriend I made the cake for last week is allergic to wheat). So whipped cream is out, for me wink

I dont know whether its appropriate in this thread or not, cuz its not the best cake i've tasted.

It was a coffee cake that my sister had made for her friend and it required a cup of strong coffee. She didnt realize that you had to "brew" the coffee. So it had a cup of coffee grounds mixed in it. lol

So while it was not the best cake ive ever had. It was the crunchiest.

As funny as it sounds. I found that "Tomato Soup Spice Cake " is the most delicious cake i have ever made and eaten. it one me a great price in the county fair and is a super popular treat among my family and friends. It taste a lot like a carrot cake or a normal spice cake but the tomato soup serves as a moistening agent to give the cake a unique texture and a vibrant complex taste. Its absolutely delicious! Especially with a thick cinnamon vanilla royal icing.

My best cake ever was a chocolate torte. There were six layers of chocolate cakey goodness, and it was filled with chocolate whipped cream so thick it could have been mousse. I've been wanting to make it again ever since...but I can't find the cookbook it came from. sad

chocolate marble cheesecake, I have made it myself before, but one restaurant I went to was serving it and the chocolate part was so~ thick, it was lovely. usually when I make that cake it is much thinner, but this was at least 3 inches deep.
