Her journey had finally brought her to the Southern Water tribe. It had only taken her, what, six years to find her way there? She hoped to someday find a master to teach her "proper" water bending, but was content to become familiar with people and places first.

As she stepped further away from the boat that brought her to the frozen lands, Meilin lowered the hood of her coat, no longer feeling the need to leave it up now that the winds weren't whipping at her face.

~The Southern Water Tribe...~

Just what friends, allies, or foes would she make here?

Chen Shing, however, was not quite so pleased with being in the lands of the Southern Water Tribe.

And he was still waiting on the damn boat that was supposed to be taking him to warmer weather. He'd paid for the return trip ticket and everything. Those bastards had better not left him stranded here in this godforsaken cold. Way too troublesome.

Bundled up in his thick parka and boots again (he'd been forced to purchase and barter for them when he'd gotten here, respectively) the earthbending merchant had wandered down to the shore again to glare moodily at the boat there. Not the ship he wanted to see.

Great.

The familiar crunch of snow met her ears as Meilin stepped off the ship moments after docking began. It was almost a feeling of home, but not quite. Nostalgia, rather. Even after all this time away from the Northern tribe it seemed she'd never lost her tolerance for the cold, that was very good. Especially as it seemed some others weren't so fortunate as to be so well adjusted...

A small smile tried to tug at the corners of Meilin's mouth, but she resisted, and instead approached the Earth Nation youth out of curiousity. Oh but he looked like one unhappy camper.

"If you intend to sink the ship with your eyes, you're off to a good start, young man." The last part added just to make sure that he knew he was being addressed specifically. The young adult stood just a bit out of the way of his glaring.

Well one thing was for certain- Chen hadn't counted on being addressed by a random stranger while he was glaring at the ship. So, it took him a second or three to realize it, and react. Unfortunately, his mood seeped through to his responses. Just as fortunately, his usual attitude managed to temper the bad mood, turning the response into some form of witty comeback.

"Yeah, well I'm trying. With any luck, it'll sink before it sets off again."

He looked up, half out of curiosity and half out of the pure habitual appraisal any salesman worth his salt had. Unconciously, he stuffed his hands deeper into his pockets.

"I'm Chen Shing."

Lin just chuckled faintly, looking towards the boat as if making sure he didn't actually sink the ship. Her gaze found him again almost immediately, nodding.

"It's nice to meet you, Chen Shing, I'm Meilin."

"Nice to meet you." Chen looked away again, eyeing the activity onboard the ship.

"I guess you're from the Northern Water Tribe." He'd gotten an eyeful of Meilin's clothing when he'd glanced at her, and thought it good enough to take a guess. Not a lot of people walked around in blue without being from a water tribe. "Or else you've been on a trip, and are coming home."

"Hn... and you must be from the Earth Kingdom."

Judging by how unaccustomed he seemed to be to the cold. She sympathized, but only just a little.

"So why are you glaring holes into the ships? Practicing some new form of Earth bending I haven't heard about yet?"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 23, 2006 8:48 pm

"Born and raised." By which he meant, yes.

He didn't look away from the ship this time when she spoke, but a corner of his mouth did manage to twist upwards in a species of smirk. Or was it grin? Maybe a hybrid. Oh well. "Yeah. It's a secret, though." Definitely sarcasm in there. Well, his sisters had always told him his sense of humor was stunted. "I'm practicing while I wait for my ship out. It's too damn cold here."

A glance askance at the woman. "For me, at least."

This one did seem a bit cynical, though she couldn't say she disliked it. Her eyes narrowed just a bit, a strange show ofamusement of her own. "I see, then either this is your first time visiting the poles or you're more resiliant than you let on." It was the closest thing to praise that the somber-faced woman usually came, though she wasn't looking to make any new friends by any means either.

Meilin was also not concerned with making out the nature of his mirthful expression.

"Is your ship running late, or is this about the time you're expecting them?"
PostPosted: Sun Dec 24, 2006 8:02 am

"It's my first time at the poles." So what if he'd been here already for a few weeks. There was a limit to his patience with cold weather. He imagined that he would probably pop by the poles again at different points in the future, and then he really would be more resilient than he let on, but that wasn't the point at the moment.

"The captain said it'd be here sometime this week." The curled corner of his mouth fell down, settling into the more familiar frown. "Been here every day since the beginning of the week, looking for it. Not like they'll come get me when they dock."

Ahh, yes, she could see how the first visit could be a shock after having traveled so long away from home. If she hadn't been born in the cold this would be uncomfortable for her as well, but for the most part she hadn't lost her tolerance over the years. Other areas by comparisson, however, were quite stifling.

"Think you could abandon your post long enough to get something hot to drink while you wait?"
PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 5:58 pm

His eyes wandered over to Meilin, though he didn't turn his head. An eyebrow rose marginally. Huh. He hadn't been anticipating an invite for a warm drink.

"That depends on the price." And who would be paying. He had no problem paying his own, really, since it made sense, but some girls were weird and expected him to pick up the tab for both. This one didn't seem like one of those, though.

That was as good as an agreement to Meilin, it seemed, because no sooner had he said this than she'd turned, hands in pockets, and was headed in the direction of the nearest hut where they could purchase said beverages.

"I'll cover it."

Not entirely unlike her. Chen didn't strike her as the type to expect a free ride, or mooch, so she had no problem extending a little kindness to a stranded stranger.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 6:15 pm

Now he did turn his head towards the woman. In fact, he turned his whole body. Well now, that was certainly unexpected, wasn't it? Here they were, met only a handful of moments ago, and she was covering his drink.

... Well. Who was he to turn down a free warm drink? So Chen gave a faint shrug and jogged in Meilin's direction to catch up.

As Chen caught up with her Meilin's voice broke the arctic silence, eyes cast ahead on their destination, pace easy. "So Chen, where specifically are you originally from?" Meilin was curious to find out if it was anyplace that she'd been before, and also to find out just how far from home the young man had freely wandered.

She brushed aside the cloth hanging that covered the doorway as they reached the hut, stepping inside and pausing briefly for Chen to step in after her.
