Of all the amazing ideas that had come to him over the years this one quite possibly took the cake. Lufa beamed down at the little boy he saw before him. Beautiful black skin clothed by none-too-cheap designer slacks and a simple blue checkered shirt with matching bowtie. The silver buckle stood out rather nicely and played off the bright colors of the shirt. The sunday-best outfit seemed a touch out of place in Lufa's moderately lived in two room flat. It hadn't been cleaned recently but there was a to-do list and Lufa had every intention of getting around to it. It was just that other things were more important. Like picking up his check from work or adopting the newest, freshest black child from GD's clutches.

"This place is a dump," the child said as he cleared away some mildewed clothing that had been piled on a counter. Lufa smiled genuinely at the statement, oh the candid remarks of a child he thought. The light voice cut lightly across the moment "No really. This place sucks, it smells like a bus station."

The smile faded from Lufa's face, and he gazed down to meet the indistinguishable pools of brown that were his child's eyes. "Thats enough English." There was a tone to the words that didn't even need to threaten. Silence was required, so it was given. In return the tone vanished into something airy and familial. "I'll clean house tomarrow but you'll have to be a big boy and tolerate it until then, okay?"

The boy looked back crossing his right arm across himself to comfort himself from Lufa's gaze. "My names Jared."

"No. You're English, I am your father." English gave a begrudging sigh before allowing Lufa to show him to his room.

The room wasn't terribly big, nothing in the second floor apartment complex could really be considered 'big' by anyones standards. The rooms small size was encrouched upon even more by the mountain of cardboard boxes that lined the far wall. They were boxes that had once been white but now bore a somewhat graffitied apearance due to the rewritten labels that covered nearly every inch of visible space. "Don't mind them, I'm still kinda in the midst of unpacking. Your official bed will be here in a couple of days but until then I've put a matress in here. There's a small television in the living room but its a bit fuzzy. In all don't worry too much about anything I picked up my last paycheck so this is only a temporary thing."

English gave a nod and slowly eyed his new living space. It wasn't paradise or anything but it felt safe enough. Perhaps once his bed got here and his 'father' had tidied up a little things would get better. It sure beat whatever vauge concept he had of living on the street. His 'temporary' bed wasn't too shabby either in the grand scheme of things. It was a simple twin matress, not namebrand but the boy found it comfortable enough when sat on. He looked towards the door and saw Lufa watching him get adjusted to his new environment. "So dad, is there anything else? I mean what about friends, or dinner, and where are my clothes?"

A look of mild confusion passed over Lufa's face. He hadn't expected English to ask so many questions so quickly. It would have been more of a happy surprise if he'd been able to answer everything. "Uh, well lets see. I ordered pizza, didn't know what you liked so I got four larges and varied it up, and that should be here in about twenty minutes. As to friends you'll just have to make some new ones but that shouldn't be too hard." It was the most 'dad' answer he could give, truth was he didn't trust a lot of the little hoodlums that lived in the area. "As to clothing, Daddy needs to cash his check before you can get anything else. So you'll have wear what you've got on until this weekend, we'll go shoping for a new wardrobe. We won't be leaving the house until then so it won't matter all that much."

Dinner hadn't been too bad in the grand scheme of things. The pizza man came a few minutes later than expected, right on time. He'd handed the pies over and recieved his $10 tip, nothing more. English was keen enough to notice that his father hadn't actually given money to the man for the pizza. It really wasn't a large enough reason to ask so both English and Lufa proceded to wash up for dinner. I consisted of a squirt of Purelle and some half-assed rubbing of hands. Lufa smeared the substance thick over the whole of his hands and allowed them to air dry with a satisfied smirk. Of all manner of things that occupied English's new home Purelle was probably the most prevalent aside from the boxes with a thousand labels. Tiny nozzled travel size bottles littered the place in various states of empty. They sat down on the 'moderately-loved' heap that was Lufa's couch and set the pizza on a wrought iron and glass coffee table. It looked out of place, but it had been cheap. Slices were divvied up, Lufa took note that English was a cheese junky.

"So whats with all the hand cleaner?" he said in an innocent manner ignoring the fact that Lufa was about to sink his teeth into a slice of mushroom-sausage-pepperoni-canadian bacon-pineapple-black olive-green pepper-hamburger-thin stripped sautee'd onions-extra cheese with alfredo sauce.
"I just like to know that if I need to feel the antimicrobial tingle from Purelle it's readily available." his mouth proceeded to open for a second attept at the bite.
"Why?" he nibbled on cheese, playing with the stringiness.
The pizza came down again, realizing he wouldn't be able to eat until the question had been answered. "Because sometimes I just need to feel clean."
"...Why?"
"Well hmm... How to explain it. It's like, yawning when you aren't tired."
"Oh." English shrugged, figureing he could chance another question "Then what was with the pizza guy?"
Lufa winced visibly and he lowered the tantilating slice of heaven once more. He knew children could be inquisitive but Jesus! "You mean why didn't I pay him for the pizza?"
"Yeah."
"I have something worked out with them." Before English could continue Lufa turned on the television, he'd already set it to cartoons should something of this nature occur. The boob-tube hadn't ever failed at stealing away Lufa's attention in his youth so perhaps this glowing idol would allow him to give his tastebuds a vacation.

The slice rose up in a glorious procession, a slow-motion fanfare of both textural sensation and tastes. He could feel the warmth of it on his lips.
"Why?"
Lufa's world came crashing down, this child was hellspawn. The seemingly elusive first bite was being stolen from him once more. No, he had to take action lest his slice cool too much and solidify to a crumbling mass of luke warm mozerella.

"Shush and watch." he said making a vague gesture with his free hand to the Tele as he bit down of the over-piled goodness.

A vague light source that pierced the otherwise dark room and the smell of bacon was what woke English. The room was slightly cool as if the thermostat had dropped a few degrees during the night. He put his hand to his face wiping the sleep from his eyes, sticky. The last thing he'd remembered was curling up on the couch using his 'fathers' thigh as a pillow a few hours after dinner, how'd he end up here? What was more was that he was wearing pajamas rather than the semi-formal outfit he'd fallen asleep in. It begged one simple yet important question: Why hadn't he woken up? Even back at the mansion he wasn't what most considered to be a heavy sleeper, surely being undressed and redressed would have done something to wake him.

He pushed the thoughts from his head as there was the metalic sound of kitchenware. English could feel his stomach was empty despite his attempts to finish off the cheese pizza the night before. He'd done a commendable job for his age considering that most couldn't hope to consume half a large
He rolled to the side being mindful that he only had a small footpath before coming into contact with boxes. It was a good thing that there wasn't a need to hurry oneself along before he'd gotten used to the spacial issues his father's house suffered from. He could imagine falling painfully onto the mass of angles and edges, it wouldn't be pleasant. However there were a few lingering questions that got added to the list he wanted to ask his guardian.

Wrapping himself in one of his blankets he sleepily stumbled out into the living room and then the small bathroom. From his vantage he could see part of Lufa's back as he cooked and did what seemed like dancing. English let out a yawn, wiped, flushed and washed his hands noting that the water from the faucet was freezing. Perhaps that had something to do with the overabundance of Purelle. Whatever the case he was ready for breakfast. "Morning!" called English into the kitchen from the living room. There was no reply as he closed the gap. "Hello?" he gave a tug at lufa's apron.

Lufa gave a slight jump as he turned around feeling English seemingly from out of nowhere. His right hand was a blur and it had drawn a sizable kitchen knife from it's block. Instinct. It nearly sang as it passed through the air stopping abruptly about a fist from the young boy's throat. English jumped back as well startled and slightly scared at the reaction. Had his father just drawn a knife on him? "Jesus! You can't sneak up on me like that!" Lufa shouted with fury in his voice. He removed his hand from the knife allowing it to drop to the floor. The damage it seemed had already been done and English continued to back away slowly his lip quivering slightly as his eyes began to sparkle with the onset of tears.

There was no second thought to the actions that followed. Lufa's left hand removed the earphones allowing them to clatter to the floor as he knelt down in a slump, dropping an egg coated spatula. His arms came out in front of him hands open and a clear appology was smeared across his face. He became aware that if it'd taken him a split second longer to recall English's face there'd have been a horrible mess to clean. 'Sorry' he mouthed as he gestured for English to come. It was the same gesture one would use to coax a wild animal. It made English stop for a second and question his fathers intent.

A pathetic sort of whine came from across the room. Tears dribbled from dark eyes and flowed across even darker skin. He sucked a wheezed breath sounding like some half powered vaccume. "Come here. Come on I'm not going to hurt you, you startled me is all." He beckoned again and English came wanting to be held more than he really trusted the man who'd adopted him. Lufa wrapped his arms around Jared, supporting his weight and lifting him up. It wasn't hard to do, the boy nuzzled into the crook of his neck continuing to make the pathetic whine as he cried. The eggs were done so with his left hand he nudged the pan off the burner and shut off the gas. "Shh... Shhhh... calm down, it's all right. Everythings all right now."

It was day two and he'd already nearly killed his ward. He held English for nearly a half hour before the tears stopped. Suffice it to say breakfast was ruined.

Three days had passed without further incident and English had spent mornings on the couch until Lufa was done in the kitchen. He'd surmized that it was safer than taking a chance on a greeting. It seemed that today would hold the promise of homestyle corn meal waffles coated in honey and cinnamon with sliced peaches and a strawberry blended whipped cream. English hadn't ever had 'vegetables' with his breakfast before and at first he made a 'yuck' face. That however was before Lufa had explained that corn wasn't actually a vegetable but rather a grain that was eaten as a vegetable. The sweetness of it also turned out to be a crowd pleaser.

"So are you ready for today?" Lufa asked casually waiting for English to finish the slightly larger than polite peice of waffle he'd been chewing.
"Whats today?"
"Saturday."
"Oh? Whats important about today?"
"Well if you can't remember then I geuss I'd be spoiling your surprise if I told you huh?"
"Oh you mean what you said when I first came here? Really? I thought you were just lying."
"I don't lie English. It's good you remembered though, you aren't too attached to this place are you? I mean theres nothing you really like about this place right?"
"The foods good."
"The food can stay the same if you want." Lufa said half laughing. "Anything else?"
"Not having nightmares is nice too. Though you can't bring that can you?"

Lufa got quiet for a second and milled his minced waffles with his fork for a few moments before filling his mouth. He took his time chewing before touching his glass of milk to his lips and washing it down. His eyes avoided the brown pools that were English's eyes. He would have asked what English had meant by that statement if he'd not already known. There were some things his adopted son simply didn't need to know existed.

"I'm sure that you won't have nightmares at the new place either. If you do we'll buy you a dream catcher or something. Okay?" English shrugged in agreement before putting another overstacked forkfull into his mouth.

((I'll finish up the day a little later))
