Welcome to my quest for Aurora Borealis - or the Northern Lights. One of my favorite pieces of folklore has to do with these lights. I hope you enjoy reading through my concept (When I have it all up) and enjoy getting to know Bella Dawn.

Name: Bella Dawn Barclay
Spirit: Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights; Danish Folklore)
Gender: Female

Appearance

Eyes: Bright Yellow
Hair: Black, highlighted with neon green, neon yellow and neon blue.
Skin: Black, made to look like the night sky.
Markings: Her eyes are underlined with a neon green streak; Across her nose and cheeks she has the traditional bridge marking of a swan done in black. Easily seen due to it covering up the starry sky and being the only pitch black spot on her body.
Extra/notes: Bella has a pair of white headwings. They are a swan's.

-Doesn't get hair until she's a Kid

Personality:

Overall: Hyper little ball of energy one moment, dead wire the next. Unpredictable, exciteable, loyal. Social and out going. Definitely weird – likes bright colors, nothing dark. Would make a good raver.

Broken Down

Baby:

Bella, as a baby, is restless during the night time. She doesn't cry very often unless she REALLY wants something but she does tend to make a lot of low whistling noises and move around a lot. During the day she's a bit more calm. Observant. New people interest her greatly and she'll always reach out to them. Obviously, being limited to a new body does not make Bella incredibly happy. She, however, doesn't see it fit for her to complain too much about a situation she's unable to change. Thus, as the winds of the solar storms go with the flow, so does she.

Toddler:

Now that she can actually move, Bella's a hyper little thing. Honestly, she has her ups and downs. One moment it can be as if she'd ate an entire mountain of sugar and the next she could be as slow as a turtle on it's back. The unpredictablity of solar storms have affected her energy. In fact, Bella could most likely be used to predict the intensity of solar storms. Of course, nobody's going to know this (Addie's a history buff, not science, after all) but it's a nice little tidbit of information nonetheless.

Kid:

--

Teen:

--

Likes: Neon colors, bright lights, oranges, lemons, carrots, running around, sports.
Dislikes: Chocolate, dark colors, disloyalty in any form, plums, being inside.

Notes Of Interest:

-Swans mate for life. When Bella ends up falling in love, she'll fall in love deeply and almost irrevokably.

-Unfortunately for Aderyn, Bella, when in hyperactive mode, interrupts any type of electrical signals. Sometimes this will cause blackouts, kill the phone (or at least make it way too staticy to understand), or computer crashes - depending on where Bella is and how severe the 'fit' is. This is due to the plasma in her blood that gets way hyped up when solar storms are really bad and noticeable.

-Her eyes are pupil-less and glow in the dark.

-Highlights in her hair also give off a very VERY small amount of light in the dark.

The aurora is a bright glow observed in the night sky, usually in the polar zone. For this reason some scientists call it a "polar aurora" (or "aurora polaris"). In northern latitudes it is known as the aurora borealis, which is named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for north wind, Boreas, since in Europe especially it often appears as a reddish glow on the northern horizon as if the sun were rising from an unusual direction. The aurora borealis is also called the northern lights. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and from March to April. Its southern counterpart, aurora australis, has similar properties.

The sun gives off high-energy charged particles (also called ions) that travel out into space at speeds of 300 to 1200 kilometres per second. A cloud of such particles is called a plasma. The stream of plasma coming from the sun is known as the solar wind. As the solar wind interacts with the edge of the earth's magnetic field, some of the particles are trapped by it and they follow the lines of magnetic force down into the ionosphere, the section of the earth's atmosphere that extends from about 60 to 600 kilometres above the earth's surface. When the particles collide with the gases in the ionosphere they start to glow, producing the spectacle that we know as the auroras, northern and southern. The array of colours consists of red, green, blue and violet.

The Northern Lights are constantly in motion because of the changing interaction between the solar wind and the earth's magnetic field. The solar wind commonly generates up to 1000,000 megawatts of electricity in an auroral display and this can cause interference with power lines, radio and television broadcasts and satellite communications. By studying the auroras, scientists can learn more about the solar wind, how it affects the earth's atmosphere and how the energy of the auroras might be exploited for useful purposes.

((...Severely, and I mean severely, shortened explanation of this occurance ^_~))

Story of the Swans

I haven't been able to find the exact story of the swans, but in Danish folklore, it's said that the Northern Lights are created by a throng of swans that flew too far north. The group was encased in the ice and each flap of their wings in attempt to escape caused the lights to reflect off their wings, onto the ice, and into the sky.
