Herein be the legend and historie of the race of man, and their place in this lande, and the rules that they, as creatures of God and the All-father, must obey.
cheap, bad attempts to sound old englishy brought to you by Ryugen
--------------------------------------
RPing Rules:

}Rules{

..1 : DO NOT steal the artwork. While the concept of the shop is based off of a written work, the artwork within the shop is completely original. Anyone caught stealing or altering the work without permission in any way, shape, or form will be reported- this is an offense that will blacklist you from the shop and potentially get you banned from gaiaonline.
-artwork for the humans is not currenlty a set process, it will likely come as a spesific form of custom art to be purchased for your human characters. Weather or not this art will be growable is up for debate, as humans are not the primary shop focus, though they will play part in the plot.

..2 : DO NOT start arguments in here. We understand not everyone will like each other but we ask that you get along. Don't bring up issues from outside the thread into here, likewise leave controversy and politics in the chatter box and general discussion forums where they belong. There's just too much to disagree on.

..3 : DO NOT beg the shop owners for a pet from this shop. We'll be sure that everyone has a fair chance to get one. Likewise if you lose out in an event don't complain, there'll be more in the future and we're sure to reward those that deserve one in time. Never expect us to hand you one for whatever reason.

..4 : Keep everything PG13. We'll be enforcing this very, very strongly. As the name suggests, PG13 means that the subject material presented may not be appropriate for children under 13. However, it cannot run into material that is inappropriate for children under the age of 17. To present said topics and still hold true to being within the PG13 borderline, topics such as sex, rape, drug use, child abuse, extreme violence and gore, etc. are implied rather than shown (or in the case of online forum gaming, typed out). Likewise, promotion of these topics is strictly forbidden.

..5: Names must be something that will fit well into the setting. Japanese names are an absolute no. This is Scotland, how Japanese names came into Scotland is anyone's guess if we allowed that. Celtic, Gaelic, Scottish, and natural names (like Bankfoot, Heather, etc.) are acceptable. If you're having a hard time finding names we've dug up some decent sites to look to: |+| |+| |+|
-naming your human should more closely follow normal human names, with few exceptions made, and these only for well explained reasons.

..6: Roles of Women: This is a time of conflict where the old and the new ways colide, not always well. Women have sharply lost status, though some still afford them a certain respect, they can no longer afford to act as casualy or as freely as we, nowadays, take for granted.
Aranged marriage in the upper classes is a way of life, and is excepted and even expected. Flight from such arangement is rarely an option. After all, where would they go? As tempting as it may sound for us for a character to go and become a 'wild woman'...being tortured, mutilated, or killed for 'witchcraft' has become an real and immediate posibility. Likewise starvation, sickness, bandits or animal attack. Farming is extraordinarily difficult, and very taxing, and an untrained novice would have a very difficult time mastering these skills in time to survive.
While it is possible to play a strong willed woman, keep in mind that this is not an era freindly to such things, and NPCs are likely to be more in tune with the philosophies of the day, and unsupportive of the concept.

7: Roles of Men: Men are the supporters of the family, and like women, higher class men can expect an aranged marriage, and often expect it as an chance to increase their power base or gain money from a doury. Unlike women, men can and sometimes do take the liberty of taking a mistress and sire a few 'bastards' on the side, though this is probably easier for a noble when it's harder for someone to come after you when he realizes his unsullied daughter is....sullied. (sucks to be her. A lot.)

8: Homosexuality: .....possible. But even more risky than playing 'wild woman'. The church refers to this as Sodamy, after Sodam and Gamora, the towns fled by Lot and destroyed 'by the wrath of god'. Open homosexuality is an open invitation to be tortured to death, and the church is a poweful and very creative foe when it comes to 'freeing people of their demons'. While in the modern world we are open to this concept, it is NOT an acceptable practice in this age. Same sex couples cannot breed, and would find it very difficult to raise a child together without the risk of being discovered.
"Kids say the damndest things."

9: Our stances on Homosexuality: Any and all accusations that we are 'bad' for making these rulings on the HISTORICAL stances on independant women or homosexual relationships will be ignored the first time, warned the second, and banned the third. OUtside the shop we have NO personal issues with this. HOWEVER, the shop obeys the laws of genetic possibility (men can't have bebies.), And historical -fact-. It does not suit the particulars of this shop to allow for 'fantasy breeding'.

We reserve the right to add more Rules/FAQ/Guidelines as the need arises.
-------------------
To qualify as a City the population must top 100 people, with ten active merchants and an qualified, approved noble ruler. Prompt will be provided by Thalion or Ryugen to test for creating an Noble character. Submit requests to the mule.
-
To qualify as a Town the population should be at least 10, though considerations for the fact we have comparatively few people will be made. The ruler will likely be an well to do merchant or someone similar, again, if you would like a position as this, please sumbit a request to the Mule.
Founding a new town requires a head of the town and at least nine citizens. If the founder of the town plays a majority of the new citizens, the request will be denied.
-
Farms: Usualy at least two people form a farm, a husband, wife, and possibly several children. Families are usualy -large- in this time as death is common place, and not all of the family is likely to make it to adult hood.
-
Shops:
shops must be placed either in a city or town. Traveling merchants with wagons do not qualify as an official shop. Usualy shops are run by a single owner, and often have at least one staff member.
-
Apprenticing:
A common practive of the age, a student is sent to live with a master of their craft or profession, and acts as a student/servant to the master until they are promoted to the stage of 'journeyman', where they leave to find a new place to make shop and become a craftsman capable of accepting apprenticies in their own right.
Apprentise ship can come to an end if something happens to the apprentice, if they do not prove skilled enough, or if the Master simply desides he can't tolerate the student. Apprenticeship is a privelage, not a right.

Common professions

Farmer/Serf

Blacksmith

Miller

Hunter

Weaver

Baker

Butcher

Shepard

Dyer
---------

All of these are pretty self explanitory, though in bigger cities you could have more specialized things, like candle makers (Chandlers), barel makers, basket makers, just about anything. Smaller towns are more likely to rely on trade by travelers or be much more self reliant. Women's roles are limited of course, though weavers are probably one of the more likely professions.

-----

Common Clothing material:
Silk and cotton are probably some of the more unusual cloths, more common would likely be wool of varying degrees, leather, and linen.

----
Education:
I think most of us can guess about this one. The answer is -little-. Many histories are oral, though with writing is making a SLOW influx, it's a difficult art to learn, and probably far more tied to the Christian Church at this time.
Women, with their status rapidly dropping, are rather low on the educational priority list.

(Yes I'm sorta grabbing at things from what I remember. Expect some innacurasy but we'll try and improve)

A note on Professions:

-Hunting-:
--Fur trapping: Although a good reason to hunt is to bring back meat, another excelent reason for doing it is the many uses for FUR and LEATHER. Cattle are expensive to raise, horses also, and are sometimes more than a small family can afford, let alone to kill for leather until they drop on their own.
Deer and elk are one of the better sources for leather, though in spite of some of the amazing or lovely pelts appearing on the firebringer deer, Deer hides are more likely as a novelty or leather source than of interest to a furrier. Deer fur is coarse and not as thick as some other animals, and neither as interesting decoratively nor for a fur trim.
Winter hunted wolf, bear, rabbit, or the like, with thicker pelts and longer, richer fur are more likely to be hunted for their coats.
Songbirds and more traditional game birds are hunted alike via various methods, and yes, people do actually eat the song birds. Yummy. If you have the right client, these can be a delicasy, or a novelty to put in a cage if you can sell them at a city market.
