What if... a dragon wasn't really a dragon?

Name: Gunther ("Gunner")

Gender: Female

Spirit: Leafy Sea "Dragon". In the past, believed itself to be a sea guardian of types, despite its tiny tiny size.

Hair: Translucent blue-green, spiked in a mohawk like the sea dragon with two tendrils hanging in front of her ears ending in a long ponytail. A bit at the front of the mohawk flops into her face, as the general trend of the shape seems to curl forward. The hair itself is not one color, but fades to more blue or green shades depending on the light.

Eyes: Wholly black, with no white. They're rimmed in lashes that are strangely shaped, like the wavy edges of seaweed.

Physical Appearance: Her skin is exceedingly pale, with a slightly luminescent greenish tint darkenign deeper into a sea-weedy green in places. Faint bands or stripes can be seen on her arms and legs, with an echoing stripe pattern visible at her hairline and cheeks. Her fingernails are naturally black, and there's webbing between them (and her toes, for that matter). Arms and legs have the same sort of "leafy" decoration as in the picture below, looking rather like she's got kelp or seaweed hanging from her limbs. (Monster from the black lagoooon! *bricked*)

The skin itself feels somewhat different from normal skin, somewhat thicker and rougher. Other than her mohawk, there's no hair anywhere on her body, just the patterning of her skin and the strange kelplike growth. She also has a tail, curly and thin (like that of a seahorse). The webbing on it seems a continuation of her hair, winding down into a curious sort of curlique.

She's also very thin and almost fragile looking. Her height is less than most her age, perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 the "normal" average. Water is a second home to her, making her a natural swimmer. In the water, she's both graceful and quick - two things she desperately lacks on land despite her best efforts.

While she can talk, she chooses not to for the most part. Silence is calming to her, and she prefers that over any sort of noise, even music. White noise is the exception to this rule.

Personality: Most of the time she's quiet, thoughtful, and unexpressive. Each movement is slow and precise. Nothing for her is a side thought, everythign is planned or anticipated.

She hates anyone calling her short, and has an attitude that vastly makes up for her lack of height. Any comments about her stature are met with a swift glare (and the occassional self righteous kick). In fact, she doesnt' take well to being picked on, period. Even jokingly. Otherwise, she's a pretty happy-go-lucky sorta kid that loves to play in teh dirty, roll around, adn get into trouble.

Short and sweet - She runs into things half cocked believing she knows what's best and gets confused when things don't turn out as planned. But she can be a bit of an eternal optimist - "I MEANT to do that. It all happened as it should have."

Though she is female, gender is something that confuses her. Sea dragons, liek sea horses, have males raising the eggs, the females jus tdepositing them - reversed from most gener roles humans know. Girly girls are goign to boggle her to no end, whereas the boys will be more to her liking, so she coudl be considered a tomboy. She'll grow up with it all around her, but she won't quite understand what the big deal is at all - though gaining a lumpy chest will have her somewhat alarmed, I imagine.

Hobbies: Swimming, puffing up like she's important, body surfing, generally getting herself in trouble because she thinks she knows what she's doing.

Website with tons of images and great information

From the above Website: Sea Dragons are arguably the most spectacular and mysterious of all ocean fish. Though close relatives of sea horses, sea dragons have larger bodies and leaf-like appendages which enable them to hide among floating seaweed or kelp beds. Sea dragons feed on larval fishes and amphipods, such as and small shrimp-like crustaceans called mysids ("sea lice"), sucking up their prey in their small mouths. Many of these amphipods feed on the red algae that thrives in the shade of the kelp forests where the sea dragons live.

As with their smaller common seahorse (and pipefish) cousins, the male sea dragon carries and incubates the eggs until they hatch. During mating the female deposits up to 250 eggs onto the "brood patch" on the underside of the male's tail. After about eight weeks, the brood hatches, but in nature only about 5 per cent of sea dragons survive to maturity (two years). A fully grown Leafy Sea Dragon grows to about 18 inches (45 cm).

Leafy Sea Dragons are very interesting to watch-- the leafy appendages are not used for movement. The body of a sea dragon scarcely appears to move at all. Steering and turning is through movement of tiny, translucent fins along the sides of the head (pectoral fins, visible above) and propulsion derives from the dorsal fins (along the spine). Their movement is as though an invisible hand were helping, causing them to glide and tumble in peculiar but graceful patterns in slow-motion. This movement appears to mimic the swaying movements of the seaweed and kelp. Only close observation reveals movement of an eye or tiny fins.

Most sources of information about sea dragons say they are found in the ocean waters of southern Western Australia, South Australia and further east along the coastline of Victoria province, Australia. Sea dragons are protected under Australian law, and their export is strictly regulated. A 1996 assessment by the Australian government's Department of Environmental Heritage indicates "It [the Leafy Sea Dragon] is now completely protected in South Australia because demand for aquarium specimens threatened the species with extinction."

Concept Contest 2, Girls FS
Spirit: Leafy Sea Dragon
Age: Toddler
Name: Gunther (Gunner) -> I swear there's a story behind this

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Busily playing with a plush whale and a toy boat, Gunner didn’t notice, at first, the odd sound playing at her window, nor the long rivulets of rain forging trails along the panes. The whale ‘swam’ across the rug and into the boat. Wham! Wham! Oh noooo! Gunner waggled the ship as it ‘sunk’ , flipping it upside and placing the whale triumphantly on top of it. That would show them. Yeah.

With the back of one pale hand, she rubbed at her nose. Her eyes skimmed the room for something new to occupy her toddler time when they settled on the translucent pane. Oooh. Gunner wobbled to her feet and toddled over to window, pressing her face up against it so the flesh made a fish face imprint against the glass.

“OoommMmmMooomm, “ she admired in a garbled voice. Water! Mum had told her all about water during her bath times and when she had to drink it instead of juice and then there was the koi pond… but never had she said it fell from the SKY! This deserved further investigation.

Mouse was busy making dinner, so it didn’t take much effort for Gunner to make her way past the kitchen to the front sliding door. Her chubby toddler fingers dug into the crease between the edge of the door and the wall, then tugged. The door slid open partway and allowed the curious sea dragon spirit to squish her way through to the wide Japanese style porch. Rain dripped from the overhang above, causing an unexpected squeal from the normally silent youngster. She slapped a hand over her mouth as she realized her noisiness and continued to tiptoe to the edge, then down the stairs.

Out in the yard, Gunner beamed proudly as the raindrop splatted on her. Now this was cool! She skipped around in a merry circle, then did a somersault on the wet grass, ending in the middle of the grass and growing mud with a beam of pure happiness. Her usually straight mohawk of hair soon became plastered down one side of her face as little hands pulled up the mud brought it close for examination. It didn’t smell very nice, but … oooh was that a worm?? Ever so carefully, Gunner plucked the worm up between two fingers and held it close to her face. Worm!

“Hi, “ she greeted the wiggling pink critter with all seriousness. It wiggled more, upset to be out of its wet and dirty home. She pursed her lips and peered at it, thoughtful. “Wiggle, wiggle.”

“Gunther!” The screen door slid wildly all the way open to reveal a wide eyed, mildly panicked Mouse. Relief washed over her features when she spotted the little one sitting in the middle of the yard. When the child hadn’t been in her room, Mouse had feared the worst – and it had only heightened her panic when she spied the open front door.

Gunner made a face at the full name and looked up at her Mum. “Worm, “ she answered solemnly, holding it up.

The anthomorph made her way across the wet lawn amid the raindrops and shivered a little when one trickled down the back of her neck. “I see. Hello, Mr. Worm.” Mouse crouched next to the toddler, hands on her knees. “It’s Mr. Worm’s dinner time, you know. And yours.” She held out her hand to Gunther with a smile. “Let’s get out of the rain and wash the dirt off, ok?”

Saying nothing, Gunther returned the worm to the dirt and watched it wriggle down deep. Only after it disappeared did she let Mouse take her hand. Rain? Rain. This would require further thought, but a small tummy growl reminded her that dinner was waiting inside. “Kay, “ she finally answered and allowed herself to be led away.
