The Realm of the Shifters was neutral during the Great War of the Kingdoms (as it is called in Shifter lore). The supplied spies, fighters and supplies to each side, depending on whoever paid that most at the moment. Because of this they were not hit as hard when the light won as the dark. Though they may not be trusted as much as the other light kingdoms they are still trusted more than the dark kingdoms.
Though traditionally ruled by both a female and male ruler, Sylvanya (the current queen) refuses to take on male co-ruler. She has her own reasons for this, but only a select few know it. Because of her refusal to accept a male co-ruler, there has been much unrest in her kingdom in the fifteen years since she has been Queen.
The inhabitants of the Shifter Realm sometimes have two unique gifts. Now it is different for each class. The royals can shift into any form they want. The nobles can shift into two different phyla(?) in a form’s kingdom and the middle class can shift into the anything of that animal’s kind. The lower class can only shift into one (maybe two) animals of a certain species. ((For more info see the thread in the Shifter sub-forum.))
The other unique gift of the shifter realm is given only to the royals and a few of the noble houses. This is commonly called Mind-Gifts. The royals, and some noble families, all have some sort of mental ability. Telekinesis, telepathy, empathy, farseeing, farhearing, farspeaking, catching (bringing things places with their mind), teleportation and sight. Sometimes one of these traits show up in a noble family, they are codominate and two usually shows up in the direct royal family and in some other people. Their powers are not like the power the fey have because they fey’s can use like the power of the earth while the morphs can only use what power they have in their bodies.
Shifters are employed as spies in many of the 13 kingdoms. They are neutral, giving help and aid to both sides. They have the largest and most extensive spy network of any of the kingdoms and even have spies the Aboveground.
In polite society they do not take the form of another, unless permission has been given. Staring when one shifts is a complement and adverting one’s gaze is very rude, as is shifting during a conversation. Like the avian’s in Hawksong, touching is something that is frowned upon in any society. It is reserved for very young children and young lovers in private. The Shifters are a reserved society of people. They know that though they may not have the most power or magic or the biggest army, they are the foundation of everyone’s spy network.
The twins take comfort in each other and great grandmother. They are very close and have such a high level of telepathy because they have always been able to talk to each other. They are scared about what going to happen at the ball, because Artemaeus has a bad feeling and Anwynette can feel that tension in the air.
Twins are sacred; triplets are holy and sent into priesthood at the moment of birth. They worship the tri-faced goddess: New Moon, Full Moon and Sun. They belive that this goddess is one being, with three faces that watch over her children at all times.
King’s Pack (guard) now protects the children and the Queen’s Streak still protects the Queen. Crow’s Flight are the messengers and the Light’s Arrow are the small groups that the monarch can dispatch to control upheaval in towns or stop a lone troll or a small group of invaders.
Shifters average life span is 100 years so they mature at age 23, not 18.

Before Sylvanya the Realm of the Shifters was always ruled by both a male and a female. They did not have to be married (though they usually were) but there was always a male and female ruler. The crown passed down through the eldest or most capable of ruling and was a just and fair kingdom. Sylvanya was the only child of her parents and at the age of 15 was riding with her guards in a forest and was captured. Her guards were killed and she was kidnapped. She, being trained in the art of daggers, was able to escape, but not before the people in league with her captors had killed both her father and mother. She arrived at the capital bloody and hurt, but still alive. Her aunt (a very kind and wise old lady) became steward until she came of age at 19. When she did so, she was crowned queen of the Morphing kingdom. She does not plan on taking a king or escort or anything along that matter and has made this clear. Many of the older people and the men are outraged at this and Sylvanya has had trouble calming them, but uses the Elementals as an example that it will work.
~Royal mature at the same time as everyone else does, but they are deamed worthy or rulling at the age of 19.
