So heres my beef,

We started a unit on LotR in Religion a few weeks ago, so I thought, how bad could it be? I almost broke down the first day. Good thing I don't like standing up to the teacher. We watched the clip of Gandalf fighting the Balrog, but she insisted it was a dragon, she even wrote 'dragon' on the board! I kept saying Balrog, but no, 'we'll just call it a dragon and keep it simple'. Then she writes some characters' names on the board so we can brainstorm on who or what they may represent. She spells Merry like 'Mari', Aragorn like "Aaragon", Arwen like "Arwin", and when we have to brainstorm what the elves represent (angels because they glow!?!? Don't get me started on what else she wrote about them) she writes "Rivendale". Why do we have to study LotR with someone who hasn't read the books? She kept referring to Tolkien too, like he made the movies. Oh, and one of the other kids in the class actually said ' isn't LotR just a rip-off of Harry Potter?' gonk
We had to write a reflection paper to end the unit, so I found a quote from Tolkien saying how much he hated allegory. Maybe after the Narnia movies come out, we can study them. Poor Tolkien, talk about rolling in his grave!

Dude. I remember that. But my teacher didn't write many of the names on the board, and I didn't pay as much attention, so it wasn't so bad.

I pity you, Serni. I do. stressed

Oh dear god what a nightmare that must have been!

Luckily I'm very vocal and would have said something. Hell I would have gone up and corrected the spelling on the board and possibly threatened to smack stuff with my books that I most certainly would have had in my school bag lol.

We did something on lotr in my oac english... it was fun and people would come and ask me stuff all the time.

Maybe she meant that "Aaragon" (i.e. not Aragorn) is the "Holy Spirit".

Too bad you couldn't find a hardcover edition of all six books in one volume to bring to class and throw at her. You'd think a teacher would be less ignorant. However, she is a Religion teacher, though, right? Food for thought...

That would drive me insane. Completely insane. I'd end up killing the teacher (maybe not physically, but in my mind....I'd create a character of the teacher on the Sims and kill them *nods*). I don't have Religion class *praise Eru*

Neither do I. Some of the other schools in town have them but not my school...and definately not a LOTR religion unit either. Poor Serni **pats her on the head and then gives her a cookie**

Aww...*gives Serni a cookie and a hug*

I don't know how you managed to stay quiet. I would have probably gotten myself thrown out of the class if the teacher didn't listen to me when I tried to correct her. Or at the least, walked out of there myself.
(Only after sitting around for at least one class giggling or sighing loudly every time she said/spelt/did anything wrong).

I then would have shown up the next day with every single quote about how Tolkien hated allegory I could find, the books, a complete list of the spellings of every single name...whatever the hell I could find to piss her off.

Thankfully, I don't have a religion class. I would have gotten myself kicked out already with or without the complete mockery of Tolkien's work.

Excuse me while I express my anger...

Yay Menegil for expressing the opinions so many of us are crying and wishing death over.

*Sigh*

When we will non Lord of the Rings literate people know? Sure there are Religous allegories that could be made from the books and the movies however Tolkein stated that he did mean for the books to be an allegory of any kind but Aragorn? Holy Spirit?

BY the Valar that's the most harmful piece of information ever! Character names spelled wrongly? A balrog turned dragon?

Good grief! May I help with the bursts of rage Menegil towards this teacher (if she should be called that)?

YOU ARE ILLITERATE!!!!!!!!!!!!! READ BEFORE YOU BASE YOUR "TEACHINGS" ON ANYTHING LORD OF THE RINGS RELATED!

And I am spent.

My friend had a book called "Walking with Frodo" that she recieved for her confirmation. I understand that it had a much gentler and reasonable approach. This teacher, though... *scoffs and pointedly turns the other way* Demon-like creature? Scaly dragon? Why, how can one not see a correlation? .. They both start with 'D', for instance!. stare

... I have one of those. It has some pretty nice illustrations, too. Cloth-bound. ^^

I would gladly lend it to be thrown if I was sure it wouldn't get damaged in the process!
