One had only to look at the surrounding country side to see the prosperity of the people working the land; the mansion and incumbent estates were placed on a tactical and strategic mesa that some ancient quake had thrust a short distance up from the rolling hills. Most knew about the lady who lived there, though very few had atually seen her. Not that they minded, since she made sure that the children not only got a basic education, but that orphans found homes, that the streets were kept clean, and that anyone who needed help knew where to get some. So everything that currently was had become mutual agreement by both sides.

She raced down the halls, nearly tripping on some of the carpets and snagging her maid outfit on various objects, but somehow managed to make it to the front hall in record time. The mistress was home! It also meant new stories and descriptions of places to be told while work was being done around this place, especially since the natural caverns underground were nearly finished for whatever project the mistress had planned.

She stopped long enough to catch her breath before opening the door to the forum and forgot to go through. That can't be what I think it is?! She must have made a noise, because the mistress looked up from where she knelt, examining the object under her hands from among thick padding. A smile and a 'come here' gesture followed. Hesitantly, she stepped into the room, caught between keeping her eyes on the mistress and trying to get a good look at what else was there.

"I have a job -AND- a gift for you, KiJi." The mistress brushed her fingers over the pearlescent shell. "I was going around, talking to various Kyn Riders, as you know, in order to have an idea of how to go about helping such wonderful creatures that may be in the area or are likely to move here. I was later approached by some Kyn, the Japanese variety if I'm not mistaken, and asked if I would care for a lone egg they had found. I was hardly going to turn them down, they looked so hopeful..." The mistress smiled widely and placed KiJi's hand against the shell. "I asked them if they had an idea of when it would hatch, and what it might look like. They weren't sure, but given enough love, it wouldn't matter. So what I'm asking of you is this: care for this egg and become the partner to the one inside." She held up a hand to stop the protest coming. "I'm usually too busy and wouldn't be able to give it the attention it deserves. And I'll be sending you to a few nearby Riders with many different Kyn so you can learn enough before it hatches. Okay?"

KiJi sucked in a breath, head spinning from the overflow of information. A Rider? And with one from her homeland? "H-hai! Arigatou gozaimasu, Karly-sama!" She bowed deeply, hands clasped in front.

Karly smiled and clapped her hands. "Jimmy, Dusty. Take it to a room with a well-drafted chimney near my rooms, so we can check up on it frequently. Seichou, come with me so we can start planning KiJi's trip." Placing a hand on the girl's shoulder, she spoke. "And to keep you from falling into shock, I need a hand with everything else that goes back up to my rooms."

KiJi gave herself a quick mental shake and reached for the nearest bag. My very own! A smile that wouldn't hide despite her trying was etched onto her face as she started up the stairs with her first load. I'll make her proud and be one of the best! Just wait!

Three figures approached by the sky.

The first was small by the other two, agile and quick. It darted between thermals, a body much like a wyrm's, but smaller and more humanoid-- a wyrmme.

Twisting through the air beside the wyrmme was a long serpentine dragon, red and black in color. It curled and spun as it flew, slithering through the air toward the estate.

The final figure dwarfed the other two. An abnormally large European was mildly famous as the largest known Kyn, over a hundred feet from his nose to the tip of his tail, four tons of dragon. His wingspan was nearly two-hundred feet, spread wide to catch as many thermals as possible for lift. He clearly had the most difficulty flying.

They descended toward the grounds, all three, and the European landed with a thud that registered 2.9 on the Richter scale. He was some way off from the estate itself and began to walk toward it. He didn't move fast, per se, but the simple length of his legs brought him to the large grounds quickly. He paused outside the gate and (after making sure no one was behind him) sat. The Eastern kyn flew down and touched lightly on the ground just beside him, and then their rider flew in and landed inside the gates. "Hadus, Lorne, come along." Ganon gestured for them to follow and walked toward the mansion.

Hadus flew gently over the fence and followed after, and Lorne stood and stepped over it carefully. They all three stopped outside the doors, and Ganon knocked. A maid answered the door.

"Can I help-- oop!" Her eyes first fell on Ganon's imposing figure, a seven-foot, scaly snakeman with wings. Then they darted over to Hadus, whose dark colors and sharp claws suggested that he was a warrior, and finally, onto Lorne the giant. She gawked.

Ganon coughed to get her attention. "Could you tell the mistress that a Mr. Firenight is here to see her? I was asked to come and tell her about Dragon Kyn or something..."

The maid quickly gained her composure at mention of her ladyship and gave a quick bow. "It won't take long...would your friends care to make themselves comfortable?" She gestured open-handed toward her right (his left). "There is a large spring in that direction, if you don't mind mineral water. And if they'd like a snack, I'm sure the chef could come up with something fairly quickly, as long as someone lets him know what they can have." She smiled brightly at the scaly man, obviously still a bit unsettled, but managing to keep her reaction toned down. "And as for yourself...would you like to have a seat in the tea room? I can also get you something to drink and snack on as well?"

It wasn't long before someone came knocking at the door to the room they had placed the egg in, with Karly discussing things with KiJi and her Head of Houshold as to what should be done next. They had paused earlier upon feeling the ground shake and had obviously been waiting for news.

"Mistress, a Mr. Firenight is here to see you?" A maid, younger than KiJi, had knocked and then ducked her head in. She made a face and continued, "And he's all scaly!"

KiJi sighed and closed her eyes. I can't believe you just said that, Jun! Taking it upon herself, as she was the girl's senior by a few years, to reprimand her, she opened her eyes and glared. Once the look was finally noticed, KiJi spoke. "Jun, is that any way to talk about a guest?"

Jun gave a quiet 'eep' and hung her head. "No, KiJi-sempai..." The girl fully opened the door and bowed to everyone in the room. "Please forgive this one's rudeness."

Karly had watched all this with one eyebrow raised, knowing that the order of things needed to be maintained. "Who's taking care of the guest, Jun?"

"Julia answered the door. Hiiroshi-san has already been notified."

Karly smiled, gathering up her loose skirts in their mottled blue patterning and giving them a shake to try and remove some of the dust they had collected from the room. "Then we shouldn't keep him waiting, now should we?"

Without a word, KiJi stepped up into the chair Karly had risen from and helped tie the red-brown hair up into a simple but tasteful design, placing the kirin shaped comb that was the heraldic emblem of her mistress into place.

"Oh, and you'll be coming too, KiJi...I have a suspicion of why he's here, which means you need to listen. Though you can serve tea, if you so wish." Karly knew that KiJi wasn't exactly a 'people' person; the girl was shy around strangers, except when it came to animals. Several cats, the chef's dog Disk, a few mice, and several different kinds of birds all dotted on her personal maid with absolute loyalty; but what struck others was that the animals that knew her would -not- fight with each other. It was this quality that had shown her who would be perfect for this task.

KiJi visibly gulped and then put on a mask of indifference. "As my mistress wishes." She returned to the floor and went over to wait by the door, hands clasped before her. Her eyes roved over to where the egg sat, as if silently asking for courage before returning to her mistress's face, waiting to follow Karly downstairs.

Nodding, Karly led the way out the door and started for the stairs.

Ganon sat comfortably in an armchair, his six-foot tail draped over an arm and coild around a leg. His right ankle rested on his left knee, his taloned right foot moving back and forth slightly. He spread and folded his wings and stood, bowing as the two entered the room. "Ganon Firenight. I am a Rider, and I was asked to come and, ah... educate someone about Kyn. I've brought three of mine... Hadus is my flight's Prince, and I have also brought Lorne and Dirk. I'll introduce them to you soon. They are outside right now, so if you are more comfortable talking a bit before I introduce you..."

Karly smiled and shook her head. "So forward." She had heard of this Rider from a few others, so she wasn't too surprised. She knew KiJi had been shocked as well as fascinated by the enigma that Mr. Firenight represented. "Truely, you have my gratitude for coming all this way. Yes, you'll be educating someone, but I'd like to listen in as well, if you don't mind." She was willing to let him know that -she- wasn't the one he'd be needing to focus on.

KiJi shifted a bit upon hearing what the Rider had to say. He brought three?! And we'll get to meet them? She was hard pressed to contain her excitement, but managed. She had seen sketches and stuff from what the mistress periodically brought back but had yet to see the real thing. How big were they? Her mind skipped back to the earth shake from a short time ago. Her mind simply couldn't comprehend how big the Kyn had to be to produce such an effect.

Karly had left the door open, and glanced over her shoulder. "Jun, notify Seichou that we'll be outside with Mr. Firenight." Turning back to their guest, she clapped her hands once. "I'd rather not keep you from them for long, so we can take ourselves outside. And as I'm sure you're curious as to whom you'll be teaching..." Before KiJi could protest, she placed a hand behind the girl's shoulder and steered her forward into full view.

KiJi's mind instantly reverted to ingrained courtesy upon going into shock. "Pleased to meet you sir. I am KiJi and I hope to be Akulu's Rider." She nearly bit her tongue as the name she'd engraved in her heart slipped out. After attending so many animal births, she'd gotten the knack of guessing which ones would be male or female...and had gotten the feeling that the egg contained a female. But she was very embarassed, as she didn't want to sound boastful or too forward... She gave a quick bow, hands clasped before her. Hopefully he wouldn't be offended?

(( 4laugh Wasn't expecting her to grow so soon! x.@ Ah well...I'll just toss that in after a bit...))

Ganon bowed to Kiji and smiled. "You have formed a bond with the egg already? You are clearly excellent Rider material." He wagged his long tail a bit and led the way outside, turning and guiding them twoard the nearby spring.

Lorne became visible first, sitting and lounging against a rock wall. He was gigantic, much much larger than any European was ever supposed to be. Ganon nodded to him as they approached. "That's Lorne. He's got some sort of genetic anomaly that makes him huge like that. Don't be afraid, he's really sweet. And there's Hadus, my flight's Prince." He pointed to the coiled Eastern who suddenly fell under Lorne's shadow, grumbled, and moved to a sunnier spot. "Akulu will be your flight's Princess. You won't see the third until we get there, but his name is Dirk. He's a cross-breed between a lunar and a very small kyn named Hakuryu." Ganon grinned. "I call him a flying shoulder-dog."

Lorne raised his head and squinted from a distance, then grinned as he recognized Ganon's silouhette with his nearsighted eyes. "Ah! Hadus, he's coming!"

Hadus rolled over. "I know that, idiot. I could sense him when he opened the door. These whiskers aren't just for show, you know."

Lorne grumbled. "Show-off. Hey, Dirk? Where-- oh." Dirk was barking and flapping his little wings, zipping through the air toward his Rider. He was the size of a small puppy, just large enough to sit comfortably on Ganon's shoulder.

They followed Ganon out the door, Karly trailing farther back as an observer. As Lorne became visible, KiJi's eyes widened at the size. The explaination was interesting, but just the sheer size was fascinating...and how the heck did they keep him fed? At the mention of the Eastern, she paid more attention, though was obviously confused by the terms 'Prince' and 'Princess'. Glancing back at Karly, who looked a bit confused as well, they shrugged at each other and KiJi returned her attention to the front.

Which was probably a good thing as she nearly missed what Ganon had said. A flying shoulder-dog? She nearly couldn't believe her eyes when a small white and blonde barking blur came from the direction they were going towards. No way!

Karly coughed politely, to attract attention. "Would you care to explain what you meant by Prince? I have some understanding of hierarchy within a flight, but I'm not sure I've heard that term before. And is there anything we should expect once Akulu hatches?"

With a flutter of wings, Dirk landed on Ganon's shoulder and wagged his tail. "Ganon! You brought friends!" The wyrmme chuckled.

"You know if Hadus caught you calling me Ganon he'd have your hide, Dirk."

Dirk scoffed. "Psh. He could try. I'd bite him."

"Because your teeth are even as long as his skin is thick."

"Sh-shut up!"

"He wouldn't have you saying that, either." Ganon smirked and Dirk lay down on his shoulder, folding his little wings and sulking. Ganon turned around and walked backward as he addressed Kiji's question.

"Ah... Prince and Princess are simply terms for a flight's First. The first Kyn a Rider owns is called the First, or the Prince or Princess, and holds authority over the other Kyn. A Prince or Princess makes important decisions for the Rider and suggests which Kyn should be ridden into various situations. At least, that's how it is for me. I don't know how often you'll get yourself into... situations..." He grinned a sideways grin at the two. "I'm known for doing notably dangerous things. Hadus is my First and most trusted Kyn. Lorne and Dirk must show him respect, though my orders hold authority over his. Aside from the First, other kyn don't really have authority over each other, aside from parents to children." They were nearing the spring now, and Hadus was shaking himself as he stood.

Ganon continued, "There are four known types of Kyn: Eastern, European, Lunar, and Gargoyle. Eastern are like Hadus: long, serpentine, capable of growing very large. They don't have wings, but can fly nonetheless. They're not usually as fast in the air as Europeans, but they are more maneuverable.

"Lorne is a European. They tend to be much smaller than a full-grown Eastern, but Lorne is an exception, as I told you. They have the most raw strength because of their powerful limbs, and their fire breath is the most potent by most accounts.

"Dirk is an example of a miniature, winged Lunar. Lunar Kyn are the only Kyn who cannot fly. They're a little larger than the average wolf, and they can run for hours and hours on end without stopping. They're much faster on land than any other kyn, and they're the best to take with you if you travel in the forest.

"And of course, the Gargoyles were recently discovered. Larger than a Lunar, smaller than a European. They're faster in the air than any other kyn, and more maneuverable than Europeans, less than Easterns. Ah... they're not as strong as Europeans or Easterns... Am I going too fast for you?" Hadus and Lorne were politely watching the group. They had reached the spring.

KiJi quickly shook her head. "Nu-uh." Her hands itched to see if Dirk was as fuzzy as he looked; tamping that reaction down quickly, she took in the other two Kyn. Such a difference...

Karly raised an eyebrow. "So I can assume from your little Dirk there, that all the different types of Kyn can interbreed?" She had only started on getting information and was quite happy to be getting whole lumps of it all at once. Her own hands itched for a sketch pad and some paints; in such a setting, they looked very majestic and powerful.

Figuring it was probably in her best interest to be polite to the man's Kyn, KiJi bowed first to Hadus, then Lorne, then Dirk. "A pleasure to meet you all." Since they were far enough out from the house, she knew Karly wouldn't mind her being forward. After all, she was supposed to be learning everything she could. "Sir? Exactly what does caring for them entail? Will they always tell you what they want or do you have to guess?"
PostPosted: Thu Oct 19, 2006 6:41 pm

Ganon smiled. "Yes, they can all interbreed... they are very special. Dirk here is a cross between my Lunar female, Falke, and Hakuryu, a very small Eastern kyn of a very rare type. Kyn are very in-tune with supernatural forces, by the way. They can use magic, have the capacity to speak, and are even born with magical... peculiarities. I just recently bought a gargoyle egg with the colors of the German flag. The color of European, Gargoyle, and Lunar eggs are a very good indication of the colors of the Kyn inside." He paused. "Eastern eggs are another matter... they are all identical." He wagged his tail. "Now, as I was saying, they are born sometimes with peculiarities. My mate, Nicky... she has one Eastern that was born with the signature apparel of the legendary half-demon InuYasha. That is, he has dog ears, white hair and body, a red fire-resistant robe, magic beads, and a sword. He is the only known Kyn that is proficient with a weapon, I believe... He was born with all that in his egg with him, and it grew with him. It was very interesting."

Lorne laughed. "Milord Ganon, you're rambling." Ganon blinked up at the large beast and laughed.

"So I am, so I am. Right, right... um, what to expect... right. Well, a few months after the kyn is born... yours is Eastern, right? Well, it should hatch soon and be small enough to hold in your arms. It will cry for food and attention and in general be very curious. She'll likely get into trouble a lot." He smirked at Lorne and said, "And will be very protective of you." Lorne blushed, his cheeks flaring up a deep green. "They grow fairly quickly, and yours should start learning to talk once she's about the size of a large dog or small horse. They're very smart, so it shouldn't be that hard to figure out what they want up until they can start talking."

Karly made mental note to find out where this Nicky was so she could visit; she'd heard that the woman had the most Kyn anyone had ever seen in the history of mankind since rediscovering them. "Mr. Firenight, do you think your Kyn would like a little snack? It would probably be sheep...and have they tried any...condiments with a meal? Hiiroshi always tells me that his sauce is suitable for most Kyn's taste." She -was- truely curious to find out the truth...since her chef was asian and seemed to know all sorts of interesting things.

KiJi finally smiled. "No different from taking care of Hoshi then."

"Hoshi?" Karly asked, unfamiliar with the name, but sure that it was one of the many creatures that gathered around her personal maid.

KiJi nodded. "Lilly's cat had kittens...Hoshi looks just like her mom." Sifting through all the questions in her head, a few immediately popped up. "Sir, what do they eat once they hatch? I hope it's nothing too exotic, since her Ladyship got the egg from somewhere else... And do they have to study magic or does it come naturally?" She would rather head off any potential major accidents before they actually happened. "And...can I pet Dirk?" That last bit had been said wistfully, as she thought the little winged lunar Kyn was rather cute.
