bits of a star gone wrong. ~Sir Arthur EddingtonHello, and welcome to my Incantation of the Spirit quest! She was thought up on the spur of the moment for IotS' very first flatsale, and since then has evolved to be a rather mind-demanding character. This thread is primarily to collect my thoughts and display my idea for her concept: a fallen star. Please keep in mind that this is under HEAVY construction. Lots of sections are incomplete or will be rewritten/reformatted. Please be patient with me!

Her name is Taji -- a nonsense name, actually, a bunch of random letters strewn together. (Rhine banged his head into the keyboard and this is what resulted.) Ironically enough, this is an actual name in several cultures -- most obviously Japanese, where it means "Yellow and silver." In Swahili, it means "Crown"; in Arabic, it means "Of or relating to the heart"; in Brazillian it means "To cry."
Her "true" name is Zaniah, the exact meaning of which is lost -- it apparently either comes from Latin and means "An adulteress", or else from Arabic and means "Of an angel". Zaniah is the Eta star of the constellation Virgo, and designates the southern wing. Zaniah is actually composed of a very close triple star system, one that appears to be a single star when observed through any telescope; none of these three stars are individually named.

Appearance: This isn't entirely cemented yet.. All I know is that her hair is a tangle of rainbow, with one dark black streak, with little star barrettes pinned in. She is very visually bright, and glows in the dark (which is actually quite annoying, especially when she's trying to sneak an extra piece of cake at night.)
Personality: Likes attention. Very short attention span of her own, easily distracted. Kind of a crybaby. A very, very happy bubbly hyper person, to the point of being extremely annoying. Not very bright.
Hobbies: Taji likes to draw, especially places where she's not supposed to: on walls, tables, over Rhine's face while he's sleeping... She also likes writing, sculpting, and otherwise creating.
Likes: Aqua (the band!), 1950's superman comics, bright colors, nightlights, the night sky, fireflies, THE SUN!, Disney movies, rabbits, kittens, frogs, friendly woodland creatures, the world...
Dislikes: Getting wet, the dark, getting lost, thunderstorms and rainy days when she can't see the sky, constantly losing at hide and seek.
Abilities: Innate Glow: She, um, glows (especially in the dark.) This makes her very bad at hide-and-seek and general stealth, but useful if you need a nightlight!

An incomplete chibi-style picture of Taji. I drew it for the flatsale but didn't have the time to finish it -- I will someday, though! It's actually the first chibi picture I've ever drawn and I'm quite proud of it.
P.S. she looks like the spirit of crack, I know.

Flatsale prompt: Keep in mind that, as I develop the characters and concept even further, these may be out of date. This is just to display my (meager) writing ability and bouts of insanity.
First flatsale:
Rhine was never the superstitious kind. As a child, he delighted in stepping on every crack on the way to the park with his twin brother, who begged and pleaded for him to stop before their mother's back broke into a million pieces. Black cats, striped cats, bald cats, it didn't matter to him -- they were all smelly and stupid in that they wouldn't listen to him, and if any crossed his path, he would punt them no matter what color their fur was (he was non-discriminatory.) He didn't believe in Bigfoot, aliens, or ghosts either.
Furthermore, he had wandered into the library, adjoined to his bedroom, with certain expectations in mind. The first was that he'd be alone in the room to do his research (or play Solitaire on the computer in the back) as he pleased. The second was that he'd have three hours to do it in before wandering away again to seek more coffee and possibly a danish (but only the cheese kind, the fruit ones offended him. They just did.) The third was that everything would be as he left it the day before, because this was in part of the house that belonged to him, and as such, everybody else -- even the maids -- steered clear of it.
So when he found one of his research books not by the computer, where it belonged, but on the nearby table with little moons and planets and sparkles doodled all over one of the pages, he immediately decided that the only course of action was to sell his younger cousins (who, like cats, never understood that they were supposed to be in awe of him) on the black market.
He grudgingly set his cup down on the table and snatched up the book instead, a general field guide to galaxies and constellations, rapidly flipping through it to check the extent of the damage. None of the other pages bore any signs of being 'redecorated', thankfully, but the discovery did little to make him feel any less murderous.
It was not that he particularly cared about that page, or even the book in particular -- he had many more on the subject, and the graffitied page concerned a pair of dead stars he wasn't even studying. However, the thought of anyone going through his things (much less desecrating them!) made him feel like drop-kicking someone off the roof, and besides which, it was a good excuse to be grumpy. "Just because" was beginning to be a bit old, anyway.
Properly disgusted by now, Rhine tossed the book back to the table, which resulted in a flurry of paper as it bounced against the table top and skidded (thankfully missing the cup) into a pile of research notes. Cursing under his breath, he snatched what he could out of the air and, placing them atop the disgraced book, bent down to gather the rest.
It took him a good five minutes to not only pick up every single page but sort them -- various scribblings on the locations and observations of some of the stars he had been studying through a telescope at night. Finally straightening, realizing he would have to re-sort anyway to include the ones still on the table, Rhine ignored the nearby tapping that started up (stupid woodpeckers!) and reached for the papers.
Except, to do that, he had to reach past the source of the tapping -- one of his pens, uncapped, very slowly and deliberately slamming its inky brains out against the wooden surface of the table. Rhine, raising an eyebrow, immediately waved a hand over it, searching for whatever invisible thread was animating it.
The pen, suddenly deciding that it deserved to live after all, quickly swooped out of his reach and sauntered over to the pile of papers he had originally been searching for, accompanied by a sharp cold breeze that made him wince and reflexively draw back.
And, while he stared, the pen scribbled hastily in a corner of the pile of paper he had originally been reaching for:
"Um," he began, Rhine-speak for "What the ******** is this s**t?" He said instead, "Who is this? Cianan, right? I don't have time..."
He drew out a long, suffering sigh, and turned to stare expectantly around the room. When he, frustratingly enough, saw nothing that gave away the presence of anyone else in the library, he turned back to the rogue pen to find it hovering over the book, opened once more to the doodled-over page. Under the title "The Case of the Odd-Couple Stars" was a picture of the dead carcasses of said stars, now accompanied by a brand new footnote:
Apparently, he decided at last as soon as his brain came back from mutiny, this was all karmaic payback for all the crack-stepping Rhine had done as a child.

Lmao, to be honest, "banging my head into the keyboard and seeing what results" is how I get a lot of my OC's names >>;
...Though I just googled "Taji" to be sure, and it turns out that it means... "silver and yellow color"? In Japanese? o__O Dude, that's kind of frightening. (It doesn't work anyway, as neither Taji nor Rhine are Japanese... Hmm :C)

A miiinor update! I put my lucky chain of stars up in the front post (they got me my Fa'e! ^0^ And seemed to fit the concept. XD) and added some minute things to Taji's post. I really need to flesh out her character -- I'll think about it more as I take my kitty to the vet. I also have some plot ideas and stuff that I might put up... I also put up my prompt to the flatsale, in case anyone's interested in reading my crappy writing =D;
Next I'll work on the actual background concept, then her guardian's profile, all while doing homework and juggling! 8D
