(( Edit: Just as an OOC note, this is a backdated RP x_X. In character, it takes place after Quintus meets Amelie, and before Valerius meets Alianne ))
It had been long, and it had been messy, but Valerius had managed to make a kill. It had been pure luck on his part - he had been making his way along a wooded game trail and had just noticed the young hare hiding in the underbrush before it leapt for better cover. It had been young and inexperienced, as Valerius was, which was probably why he had actually managed to catch it in the first place.
He had seen his mother, his father and even his older sister catch and kill prey. It was harder than it looked though - they made it seem so effortless. He had caught hold of it as it sprinted from the bushes, but he wasn't sure what the quickest way to actually kill it was. The last time he'd done this, his then-friend Caradoc had helped him by snapping the hare's neck. Now he was alone and his young body didn't have the strength to do that. He was just glad he wasn't the hare. It hadn't been the fastest or nicest way to go.
With one paw on the remains of the leveret to hold it down, he pulled off a strip of flesh, wolfing it down hungrily. He had to be quick, or else another foraging scavenger might arrive to take his hard-won prize from him.

Quin had been scouting about, exploring this strange new territory into which he had landed. He had taken the time to scout around the area close to the den where Amélie had taken him but was tired of that and of trying to skirt around the feet of other wolves. He was still slightly uncomfortable with the fact that he couldn't talk to the others around here except the strange grey female. It was hard for a young wolf not to be able to communicate and it was making him a little lonely.
He skirted around a fallen tree, trying not to get his small paws entrapped in the branches, and was distracted from doing what he should have : looking ahead. When he did look up he almost leapt back. There was another young wolf standing a few yards away from him, back turned towards him. Quin raised his nose and sniffed; not finding the, by now familiar, sea scent which he had come to associate with Amé's mate's pack. The pup looked a little younger than he and seemed to be feeding. A brief flash of hope came upon him as he wondered if this younger pup might be of his own pack but born after he had gone. But no. The smell wasn't right and there had been none of his colour in Quin's pack.
Having found little companionship so far in the wolf pups of this region Quin might have left but he was drawn to this other for some reason. Reasoning that no wolf liked to be crept up on, he backed up and wandered in a wide circle around the pup. Coming back towards him he tried his best to make some noise and called out "Aluu.." softly as the brindle pup came into sight. He knew the word itself wouldn't be recognised but the intent, he hoped, would be.

Valerius, caught up with gorging down as much food as he could in the shortest possible time, did not immediately become aware of the other pup nearby. His focus was entirely on the bloody remains of the young hare. It was a moment before he seemed to hear the noise that Quintus was making.
The brindled pup froze, his bloody maw inches above the leveret and his mismatched ears pricked. Slowly, he swivelled around on the spot, searching for the source of the noise. He caught sight of Quintus as the pied pup called out quietly to him. Standing over his hard won prize, Valerius eyed him warily. Had he come to steal his food from him?
For a moment, Valerius said nothing, trying to gauge the intentions of the other pup. He didn't recognise what Quintus had said, but it didn't seem to be hostile. He was still wary, but he had relaxed a little. At least it wasn't a lynx or one of those huge bears come to drive him off.
"Who are you?" Valerius asked, still standing over the leveret. He wasn't entirely sure of this pup yet.

The posture, tone and the way the other regarded him warily meant that Quin could guess what the other was saying to him. He just wasn't sure what to reply. "Avara Quin.." I'm Quin he said, padding forward. His tone was jovial, his expression and posture, if not submissive, certainly not threatening. He had come to rely on his posture, inflection and tone amongst these wolves who did not speak his tongue. It seemed that body language and tone were a solid core of communication which didn't change much even as languages did.
The pup noticed the prey once again in the younger pups maw and sat down a short way from him. He was a little hungry but wasn't about to try and steal this pups kill and wanted him to know it. His tail wagged as he looked at the other pup, an openly friendly act, and he yipped a short, high pitched bark that tailed off into a puppyish yowl which he had also found communicated something all puppies were familiar with: "Want to play?"
His ears pricked somewhat comically as he overacted his body positions to convey his meaning.

The other pup's words sounded curious. 'Avaraquin' was an odd name too. Valerius took a few steps forward, away from the scant remains of his hare.
He stopped a few feet away from Quin, gazing at him with undisguised curiousity. His ears pricked faintly when the pied pup moved, dropping to a position that undoubtedly was asking him to play. It was something that Valerius hadn't seen since he had been with his pack, and it brought back a lot of memories. Breaca used to do that. He had had a lot of fun with his sister.
It might be nice to forget things, just for a short while. Breaca was gone, but he would avenge her in time. And this strange wolf did look intriguing. Valerius trotted over to him, giving him a quizzical sniff as though he was checking him out further.
There was nothing else here, and the pup had eaten today. And the gods knew, Valerius could do with a friend and a bit of fun. Half playfully, and half experimentally, the brindled pup gave Quin's ear a tiny n**.
"I'm Valerius."

The pup seemed to take a moment to decide on what to do before coming at Quin playfully. The black and white pup grinned happily, raising up on his hind legs and batting at the other pup with his front paws in mock-battle. It had been a long time since he had last really fooled around with his brothers and sister and he realised as he was doing it how much he had missed it.
Coming back down onto all fours, Quin picked up the name of the other. 'Valerius' eh? He had come to recognise the word 'I'm' it was the same as Avara - a word refering to yourself. Still, though, he had not attempted to mimic any of these words yet... He had a hard time remembering them even though he could recognise them.
Now wasn't the time to think about that, though! Quin pounced forward, towards the darker pup, tail wagging furiously, really happy for the first time since he had washed up on the beach.

Valerius had almost forgotten how much fun playing with other pups could be. He had spent so long scavenging a scant and dangerous living that he had been forced to grow up a little, as it were. Now it was fun just remembering what being a pup was like.
As the pied pup rose up on hind legs to bat at him, Valerius drew back, spinning around with a short, puppyish bark as Quin's paws brushed past him. He dropped down, his back arched and his rear in the air in the classic poise of a pup ready to spring. He remained that way for a moment, his muscles tensed, before he sprang for Quin, aiming to grab him.
This was the way he had always fought against Breaca in their mock-tussles, but being bigger and stronger, she usually managed to beat him. Not that he cared who 'won' this play-fight. It was enough having someone of his own age around, who he could truly be a pup with again. It didn't matter that he spoke funny. Pups didn't need words when they were having fun like this.

Quin returned the enthusiasm with gusto and despite being pushed down by Val's first mock-pounce, he recovered enough to make a go of pushing Valerius off. Quin was not very big for his age and this pup was almost as old as he - the pair were a good match for this rough and tumble.
Finding himself unable to get out of Valerius's grab, he squirmed, pushing the other pups chin up with his paw in an effort to get free. It was nice to be tussling like this, like a normal young wolf, free from the cares which had been plaguing him.
Seeing an opening, Quin pulled himself free. Just! He yipped a cheerful bark, tail blurring, milky blue eyes shining. He grinned and headbutted the side of his companion in an effort to overturn him, giving light puppy-ish nips to his rump.

As Quin wriggled free of his pin, Valerius backed off a little, his eyes following the other pup intently to see what his next move would be. When Quintus came for him again, the brindled pup spun around, trying to dance out of the way of the headbutt. Quin managed to catch him in the side as he moved, and the nudge combined with his own momentum managed to topple him over.
Valerius gave a short yip as the dry leaf litter crunched beneath him and the other pup nipped at him playfully. He barked again, tailing into a playful growl as he twisted over onto his back and then onto his other side, kicking at his opponent with oversized paws. His tail swept dead leaves off to each side as it wagged happily against the ground. He'd get him back for that one!

Grinning, enjoying himself, he wasn't careful and was thumped by Val's paws, falling over himself and rolling. He stopped, wagged his tail happily and screambled back onto his feet. The pied pup was delighted but danced back a little from Val, trying to stay out of his way, a challenge in his mind. He yowled a small, puppyish howl and darted back and forth, almost falling over his own paws but bursting with an enery he couldn't contain.
His rear end in the air, he sprang forward, but past, Val, bounding a little way and then looking over his shoulder as if to say "Well, come on!" he wanted to race! Darting back to the brindle pup he tugged at his ear trying to coax him forward.

Rolling back onto his front, the brindled pup's tongue lolled out of his mouth as he watched Quintus for a moment. His tail thumped back and forth against the ground, rustling the dead leaf litter. As the other pup raced back and forth, Valerius hopped up to his feet, shaking the fragments of leaf and twig from his dark coat.
When Quintus tugged at his ear, he pulled his head back, playfully resisting the obvious request. He carried on this way for a few moments before suddenly changing tack. Leaping forward, he twisted out of Quin's grip, spinning around to bark a challenge to the pied pup. Bounding forward, he raced off in a spray of dirt and litter, heading out of the clearing and towards the game trail.
The bloodied remains of the hare lay broken on the ground, completely forgotten about.

Quin was taken aback as the other raced ahead. The cheat! he grinned to himself, setting off after the other pup. The pied pup tore off after the darker brindled male as fast as his legs could carry him. He was growing and his legs were getting longer but they were still a little on the stubby, puppyish side.
As he ran his ears fell back, his tail streamed out behind him and his thin fur was blown back in the wind. He darted over branches and dodged bushes, trying to keep himself from tumbling or skidding by letting his claws grasp into the ground.
He enjoyed the feel of his muscles working, the air blowing by him and the rush of the competition. His breath misted in the cool air as he caught up with Valerius, glint in his eye as he drew even with him.

Stealing a quick look over his shoulder, Valerius barked jovially back at Quintus. Alright... it was kind of a low move, but it wasn't like it was a serious race or anything - just a bit of fun. As he glanced back though, he noticed that the other pup was gaining on him steadily. His short, puppyish legs weren't enough to outrun the older pup.
The brindled pup twisted between the trees, following the winding game trail through the undergrowth. Tree roots snagged at his paws and threatened to trip him up, but he managed to catch his footing to avoid getting a face full of dirt and leaves. Quin had grown level with him by this point, and he was struggling just to keep up. Even with his headstart, the pied pup looked like he'd beat him
The sound of rushing water came to his ears as he rushed along. The trail opened up and ran alongside a swift moving river. It was swollen from the autumn rains, and its waters looked fast and treacherous. Valerius wasn't even sure where this trail led. He had never been here before.

Quintus drew level with the brindle pup, his tongue hanging out of his muzzle as he ran, his eyes flickering back and forth to see where his new companion was and if he was taking the lead. Slowly he passed Valerius, a grin stealing over his maw, and drew closer to the river which they had been running across.
The river appeared to swerve into their way, a deeper, calmer stretch on which floated a somewhat large log. The log was placed perpendicular to the edge of the river and crossed nearly its entire length.
Not thinking, Quin scrabbled forward, leapt, landed and was off the log again before it ould spin him off. Exulting in this small victory he looked over his shoulder, milky blue eyes gleaming, expecting to see Val following him.

Realising that the other pup was now drawing level with him, Valerius redoubled his efforts to try and stay ahead. Lungs burning, the muscles of his legs hurting, he was pushing himself to his maximum to try to stay ahead. And he wasn't succeeding. Try as he might, the pied pup was pulling ahead of him.
Racing after Quintus, his breath coming in ragged gasps, the pup leapt onto the floating log, not even stopping to think about it. He was so focused on trying to catch the other pup, he didn't realise the danger he was getting himself into.
Until the log, still unsettled from Quin's crossing, rolled over in the water while Valerius was still crossing it. Paws scrabbling wildly as he realised the bark below his feet was moving, the young pup tried desperately to remain above the water. His efforts only proved to spin the log faster, and he could no longer remain steady in his precarious position. With a large 'splash' the pup tumbled into the water with a loud yelp.
All wolves can swim if forced to. Panicking, the pup struck out, flailing wildly with his limbs. He managed to break the surface of the water and took a gulping breath. However, he had strained himself to the point where he found it difficult to fight against the water. An undercurrent caught at him with invisible fingers, carrying him off down the river.
