APPEARANCE Black hair with uncontrollable bangs, though the majority of it is pulled back into a messy and low topknot. Reddish brown eyes. Pale skin. His build is on the tall and gangly side.
PERSONALITY For the most part, Rin-ji is a bright and cheerful personality. He’s fun-loving and always up for a friendly game or competition. He loves people and can be very playful, but he likes to keep moving and becomes easily frustrated when things aren‘t keeping up with him or things don‘t go his way. He doesn’t have much of a typical firebender’s temper, but Rin becomes annoyed and frustrated easily and is prone to getting short with people. Even though he’ll rarely yell, his words can get harsh when he’s annoyed and Rin-ji is not shy about letting people know when he’s frustrated. He’s very forward with his opinions and ideas, and suffers from unrepentant foot-in-mouth syndrome because he’s very bold when he should be thinking about what he’s about to say. Likewise, he teases a lot and can go too far. His skin is thick, so he expects everyone else to be able to take the jabs, too.
However, he is a very responsible young man. He’s fiercely independent and mature for his age and when it comes to necessary duties or things he really wants, he does them quickly and thoroughly. He trains and practices hard and has a real passion for learning. But this is not always the case, as his childhood worked up an immunity to authority. Constantly trying to get out of unwanted duties and attempting to trick the system in years past, he’s not afraid of his betters and will disobey or totally disregard orders if he thinks he has a good enough reason. And at sixteen, anything can be a good reason. Rin-ji is mostly looking out for himself, and as a result he can be opportunistic and suspicious. He believes that everyone else is just looking out for themselves as well and expects no charity, so he doesn’t trust or give easily. He’ll probably never be a boy that shares his toys easily.
BENDING “Untapped potential” is a common phrase that comes up regarding Rin-ji’s bending. Despite spying on some very good lessons, his knowledge is filled with holes, his techniques are flawed and his execution is based on a lot of instinct. Because of this Rin is far below average for his age despite the potential shown in being able to pick it up so indirectly. He is hungry to learn and very enthusiastic after keeping it secret for so long and isn’t afraid to take risks or fail. However, he can get too ambitious, especially when he feels he has to look good or keep up with other superior benders.
BACKGROUND
Rin-ji’s birth was subject for great gossip in the household where he was born. The son of a servant for Lord Yuan, a respected war hero of some fame, he grew up helping his mother. There was no father in sight, and many suspected that Lord Yuan himself was the father as Fei Arun was fairly pretty and was kept close to him. She denied it, but no father was ever identified.
She was dissatisfied with her life despite her lover, and without much warning she ran away. She made sure her seven year old son was taken care of by fellow servants and ordered him to stay in the Yuan household. Fei ran off with the intent to find her fortune, and promised that once she had the money she’d come back for her son. Rin was devastated, but before he had time to make plans to run after her Lord Yuan stepped in. Deeply upset by Fei’s disappearance, he turned his anger towards Rin-ji. He said that Fei had stolen some valuables when she took off, and since she was gone it was Rin who would have to repay Yuan for his losses. Until it was paid, the boy could not leave. As such, his plans to find his mother were stopped and he was raised by an assortment of other servants over the years.
When Rin was fourteen, the young Lord Yuan, a boy of ten, was beginning his firebending lessons and curiously Rin-ji went out of his way to take a peek at them. After the first lesson as a hidden spectator looking down on the lower gardens, Rin-ji began to disappear around the time that the firebending master arrived each day. From a distance he imitated the moves and listened to whatever bits and pieces he could hear of the instructions, and soon enough he caught on, producing flame. This went on for about two years before it fell apart. The instructor was teaching a more advanced move, and while the young lord couldn’t make much fire at all with it, Rin-ji accidentally made too much. Losing control of the fire, it burnt down the small section of the garden where Rin-ji was hiding. The firebender had it handled quickly, and though Rin tried to flee the scene he was soon identified.
The Lord Yuan was furious, and beyond punishing Rin-ji like any other disobedient servant, he added the money it would take to repair the gardens, reparations for the insult Rin-ji caused his son, and the price of the lessons in full to his debt. Overwhelmed and panicked, Rin felt there was no way he would ever be able to repay all he now owed, and he quickly fled the Yuan house and began to make his way out of Heshen altogether.

Rin-ji's bending potential is great, but his lessons have been spotty (to put it nicely). He needs to relearn a lot of his tricks because he just doesn't have them right, either because he couldn't make out what was being said, or he jumped to a conclusion. He has a very long, hard way to go, but with Razuten's guidance he's improving quickly.

Rin-ji can use a small knife and probably manage to use it in basic self defense. The pointy end goes into the bad guy.
COMBAT

He can certainly handle a scuffle between a couple of boys... but Rin-ji has never been in a real fight. His saving grace is the very hands on fighting methods of firebending.

When he was seven she told him she was running away to make her fortune and forced him to stay in the Yuan household until she came back for him. Fei never returned and no one heard from her, but Rin-ji did not see himself as abandoned -- after all, he can take care of himself. Now residing over the small province of Heshen, he lives comfortably with his wife and children. His marriage is a cold one, and the popular (if unconfirmed) rumor was that he had fathered Rin-ji through an affair with his mother.
