For some God only reason, I've been watching X Factor this year (probably because they're got some non-pop acts : O! Go Ben!) And the Kelly girl in the wheel chair annoys me so much neutral I think it would be great to have some more diabled people in the good spot light but she's just a token, she's no where as good as the others.
Is it just me or do others feel the same?

I haven't seen that show, unfortunately...
The only major physically disabled character I can think of on TV was one of the doctors on ER, but they cured her.
It's TV, and everything really has to be taken with a grain of salt, but I get annoyed by the ways they tend to portray things. I remeber I was watching some TV show once, and they gave a character Marfan's, but they didn't give him the right symptoms, what they did give him was spontanious onset, and they made him mentally handicapped without bothering to say that it wasn't part of the syndrome.
I get irritated by the way they portray genetic disorders and illness in general- either they make it REALLY obvious (IE: character's in a wheelchair/perpetually hospitalized/severely mentally handicapped) or the person's totally healthy. THey never show chronic but less blatantly obvious conditions, which in turn perpetuates existing stereotypes and the delusion that 'invisible' illnesses don't exist.

If more disabled/persons with conditions got into the telly business, it'd be shown much better but I think it's because employers don't understand or are afraid to ask or talk about it.

The way the ADA is worded, employers can't ask.

I think a lot of things could be portrayed a lot better than they are. The top two that come to mind? Different disabilities [and being shown as maybe even the STRONGER character, in personality. Doesn't always have to be the "weak" one. You know?] ...and different sexual orientations.
...Which are two things I feel strongly about.
What I think the problem is...is that people are also stuck on stereotypes. Whenever you see a character that's either of the two I mentioned...it's to an extreme.
...It's annoying. xD; <3
Best way to get things to happen, though? ...Act. Become good at it. SHOW them. >> I dunno. WAY easier said than done.
...Though...although it kinda goes against what I just said... It'd be cool to see more characters in wheelchairs. xD;; But..like I said...not as a "weak" character. That's almost insulting. <__<; ...OH. AND NOT ALWAYS BECAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT. That's obnoxious, too. >___> Not...that...people who have been in accidents...shouldn't be recognized...but... [Slightly off topic] ...because it's always that...I'm constantly asked "What happened? Did you get into a car accident or something?" And I'm like... "... |: No. I was high and thought I could fly so I jumped off the roof of my house born like this."
As far as that show goes, however...Uh. I've never heard of it. xD; Sorry. [Have you also realized...my posts are ridiculously long? DDDD: Sorryyyyy~]

haven't seen the show, but yeah I tried reading comic books with wheelchair character as main character it was love romance and it disappointed me BIG time. I felt like I want to call the author and give her what being hadicap really is like stressed oh and on TV show, when I see someone so perfect on wheelchair, it kinda gets on my nerve too, just a lil. Don't know why...I guess it's because..sitting in wheelchair gives you lots of side effects like curved spine, pressure sore and etc...but the TV just shows perfectly normal person on a chair

We actually have a local newsreporter in a chair (not an injury). I don't like her all that much but it is refreshing to see (she's been thereforever too)

Where there ARE other problems that may go along with being in a wheelchair... It is also breaking stereotypes if they make the person seem "normal" while in the chair. Just my opinion, though. ^.^;
