I'm not a big Sudoku player, but when I get bored enough I do it sometimes.
I was just wondering if it's popular in Japan, too. Anyone know?

If you don't know what Sudoku is, here's some information:
Quote:
Sudoku (数独, sūdoku), also known as Number Place or Nanpure, is a logic-based placement puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to enter the digits 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions") so that each row, column, and region contains exactly one instance of each digit. A set of clues, or "givens", constrain the puzzle such that there is only one way to correctly fill in the remainder.

Here's one (I'll put the solution to it in the next post, don't cheat! :3)

Solution:

5 3 4 | 6 7 8 | 9 1 2
6 7 2 | 1 9 5 | 3 4 8
1 9 8 | 3 4 2 | 5 6 7
-------+-------+------
8 5 9 | 7 6 1 | 4 2 3
4 2 6 | 8 5 3 | 7 9 1
7 1 3 | 9 2 4 | 8 5 6
-------+-------+------
9 6 1 | 5 3 7 | 2 8 4
2 8 7 | 4 1 9 | 6 3 5
3 4 5 | 2 8 6 | 1 7 9

I know, I was just asking if it was still popular in Japan. According to a sudoku website, it was made by a guy nameed Howard Garns... hmm. Here:

Quote:
The modern puzzle Sudoku was invented in Indianapolis in 1979 by Howard Garns. Garns' puzzles appeared in Dell Magazines, which published them under the title "Number Place". Sudoku became popular in Japan in 1986, when puzzle publisher Nikoli discovered the game in older Dell publications. The puzzles became an international hit in 2005.

And sudoku is indeed a Japanese name here's from another website:

Quote:
The name "Sudoku" is the Japanese abbreviation of a longer phrase, "Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru" (数字は独身に限る, "Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru"?), meaning "the digits must occur only once"[1][2][3][4][5][6]. It is a trademark of puzzle publisher Nikoli Co. Ltd. in Japan.[7] In Japanese, the word is pronounced [sɯːdokɯ]; in English, it is usually spoken with an Anglicised pronunciation, [səˈdəʊkuː]

Interesting, ne? ^^

Wow, really? Originally I posted "Number Play" (off of my own guess), but I changed it a minute or 2 later to "Number Place", because I re-read my original post with the info from the websites.

At least my guess was right. Like they always say, stick with the first thought, not the second.

Aa, sudoku became very popular in England, also. I like it, especially that you don't have to be good with numbers to do it. I suck at math.

something that i found is something called a Kakuro, which, according to it's website, is the Sudoku's bigger, badder brother

here's a sample:

The way it works, is that the clues are across and down, and you have to add up to the clue, using the numbers 1-9.

one can also play online at http://www.kakurolive.com/

Kakuro? Oooh, I wouldn't want to play that. Unless somebody would tell me exactly what to do.
