My grandma speaks Spanish. I haven't learned Russian because I'm too busy learning Tagalog. I'm thinking about learning it, though.

My school has a WONDERFUL language program! They teach Spanish, French, German, Russian, and Japanese, and the teachers are all enthusiastic. They even have sign language.

- Do you know any sign language?
- What languages your friends speak

You don't have to discuss every topic listed, and you don't have to list only two things to discuss. 3nodding I don't mind if we depart from language-related subjects, but I dunno if we're allowed to. xp You can put your posts in other languages than English if you prefer, just include a translation for people who don't know!

- Do you prefer subtitles or dubbing? Why?

*If the person I was trying to communicate with spoke a language that I'd be remotely interested in learning, then yes. Like if I were communicating with an Icelander or a Dane.
*Dubbing; for one thing I'm not a whiner about how "stupid" it sounds compared to the original, and though I'm a relatively quick reader, subtitles seem to appear for only a split second. Plus they divert attention away from the action, even if only momentarily.

This happened when a girl spoke to in spanish and I spoke to her in Japanese

I'm ambivalent towards constructed languages. On one hand, I think they're silly and frivolous. On the other, I find them as interesting as natural languages are. Generally, the only constructed language I have a continued interest in is Esperanto. Sometimes I find myself toying with making up my own language, but I usually scrap it because I realize it would never be useful to me anyway.

There's lots of accents that I find attractive 4laugh

- Have you ever had trouble with learning pronounciations? Any amusing slip-ups?
- What accents are your favorites and why?

Umm, I'd have to say pronunciation is my strong point, in that I get it down pretty quickly, along with the proper accent.

I... I like persian. A kid I know does it really funny like rofl
But prettiest I think is... Hebrew. I talked with this guy from Israel and it was really... like a mix of French and Italian almost... really nice razz

-What's your strongest point when learning a language?
-What's your weakest point when learning a language?
-What's your favorite way of saying, "I'm sorry, my grandma's not in right now, she's out defending the Earth from evil alien space invaders and the ugly chicken race. Woops, I meant playing bingo!" (as in, what's your favorite language to say that in xD)

My strongest point? Learning a new writing system. That is the easy part for me. The weakest point? Grammer, most definatly. Favorite way of saying that quote? No idea....

-Have you every accidently spoken in another language than the one you were spoken to?

No.

-What's your favourite language to learn?
PostPosted: Wed Jul 18, 2007 10:32 pm

japanese. because i was allowed into a class that had been doing it for 3 years and i managed to keep up. now before that i had to learn french at a school for two years, then i moved and so of course i continued it at the new school.but their level was ahead of what i'd been taught so i had to catch up-but i just couldnt and i only managed to pass by getting the bare minimum.
i personally think my jap classes are the most fun, so make studying less of a boring thing you have to do you know.

-have you ever had to catch up in the language you are studying?
-would you prefer self study or a language class/course?why?

Nope... then again, the only language I've taken in a class for a grade is Spanish I and II, but hey, I was an A student in both.

I personally prefer a class, so that I have a teacher to actually correct my mistakes, but I also prefer some independent study off to the side... you know, the stuff they won't teach you in a class.

-What do your real-life friends think of you speaking different languages (that they might not understand) around them?
-Do you think you'd be outgoing and confident, speaking to a native speaker of your learnt language for the first time? Or would you be nervous and timid?
PostPosted: Mon Jul 23, 2007 10:48 am

They would want a translation unless it was Russian because they would go up to Evil_Erutus and ask her. When I showed Evil_Erutus Ukrainian she found things she didn't like about. I would be nervous but I'll try to speak it around them to show them that I have and interest in it.

-Do your real-life friends get annoyed when you speak another language in front of them and expect a translation?
-Does you're family discourage you from learning (a) language(s)?
-Do you get Xenophobic comments thrown at you for speaking a different language (Ie. You're in America now, speak english! or DO YOU SPEAK AMERICAN?!)

Sometimes. I have one friend that gets immensly pissed off if I speak Spanish, but the rest of them don't bother.

They don't discourage me, but they don't encourage me either. They think it's strange when I listen to or read stuff in other languages, but other than that they just ignore it.

No, because usually, I don't speak another language unless it's to my close friends or something.

- does your family try to learn a few phrases when going on holiday somewhere
- how would you change your native language, or the language(s) you're learning
PostPosted: Thu Aug 02, 2007 7:45 pm

...Sadly, we don't really go away on vacation. BUT when I go to other places, I try to learn helpful phrases. So, even if I'm not good at it, I'm at least trying as hard as I can.

-How many languages do you think people should learn to speak?
-What language (from those that you've heard) sounds the worst, and why?

I'd say everyone should speak at least two fluently, and be able to get by in simple situations with at least a couple of others, but for that to happen, we'd really need to overhaul the language-education system in this country.

For the most part, I hate the sound of Mexican Spanish. It sounds tinny and tonguey and icky. That said, most of the people I've heard haven't been particularly concerned with the quality of their diction. Or they were Gringos trying out the two phrases that stuck after several years of HS Spanish.

-If America (or your country or region) were to institute a national language for education, government affairs and such, would you be in favor of it?
-If a national language were instituted, should it be the language of the majority, to cause the least inconvenience, the minority, to show tolerance and cultural appreciation, or a language few (if any) speak, so that everyone is on equal footing?
PostPosted: Sat Aug 04, 2007 5:44 pm

Well, America pretty much has a national language, its English. I mean if you listened to the government on tv, all they are speaking is English. So...But if they were to say "Hey! English is now the national language of the US." I wouldn't be agent it.

-How many other languages do the people in your family speak?
-Do you find it annoying when someone starts speaking or writing to you in a language you don't speak/read?

Hun, no offence, but you're pretty naiive on that count. Where are you living? Where I am, about half of the population speaks Spanish natively, even more in some communities.

Quite a lot of the signs are multilingual, and a lot of people consider you an idiot/ignoramus if you don't. There's also a fairly large Farsi speaking population, though most of them also have some English, and there are some neighborhoods where you hear quite a lot of Vietnamese and Chinese.

English is not the national language, though apparently some cities and/or counties have declared it to be the official language for that local. Government institutions provide paperwork, etc, in multiple languages. For example, you could go to the DMV and take a driving test in any of several languages.

Anyhow, back to the game.

We have bits of Arabic floating around, though only a few speak it with any compitence. My grandfather apparently spoke Aramaic as a first language (along with Arabic) but no-one bothered to learn it from him.

I've got a great-uncle by marriage who's from Germany, so he speaks that natively. He'd be a lot more fun to practice with if he'd get a hearing aid though... A lot of people have taken Spanish in school, but forgotten most of it; a few are somewhat better. One of my cousins has a little Italian and French, but only really cares about pronunciation so she can sing in it... There are probably a few others that I'm forgetting, though.

-Are there any languages you have to learn, or feel that you really, really should? Why?
-Are there any languages you don't think you're capable of learning? Why or why not?
-Are there any languages you want to learn but have conciously decided not to?
