((Order:
Dyani
Drystan
Tegwen))

The fawn squealed in frustration as she slammed her forlegs against the fallen tree. Why? Why was it so big? It loomed above her, daring and challenging her to try to jump it. And she had. But she had failed miserably all three times, and now the tree was getting to her. She scowled, her head held high and her sharp green eyes glaring at the trunk. Her legs splayed out as she stood, her sides heaving as she drew in deep breaths.

"Come on, it's just a stupid tree. Leave it alone. You can't do anything to make it smaller, you know." That little voice muttered to her. She shook it off. She could do it! "Leave, Drys. It's not worth the trouble." But could she? If anything, Drystan hated admitting defeat. She could handle it. She had handled her parents' disappearance just fine. She could handle a stupid tree, too.

There were two things the twins were well known for in FireBringer's Herd. One was their stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb furs. The other was their stubbornness. After a particularly boring morning, Tegwen had made it her mission to hunt down her other half to bring up her spirits. Following the sounds of frustrated cries and a sharp thump, the fawn had come across her sister quite easily. It was no surprise that Drystan was fighting with nature, prooving how ram-like she could be. It must be a family trait, Teg mused, though they couldn't check with their parents to find out. Tough luck had been with them from the start. Ah, well. Better focus on more cheerful things.

Coming towards the tree, the albino couldn't help but let out a giggle. "Drys, you know you can't do it, right? It's too high." Perhaps it was a bit cruel to point out the obvious, but she knew her sister could handle the statement with much more ease than other fawns their age.

Drystan frowned at the tree, and said nothing. It couldn't be impossible. It was like a part of life. It was hard. But it was manageable in the end. She had gotten herself through the hardest times, and she wasn't about to believe that a stupid tree was going to stop her. She stared intensely at the tree for a moment, before shrugging. "I know." She huffed whirling and giving the trunk a good kick. Turning back to examine her handiwork, she smiled, pleased, at the little hoof-shaped dent that was just barely visiblein the tough bark. "But I can do that, at least."

"Ooooh, boy. That tree will surely think twice before messing with a fawn again." Her voice was playful now, and she winked at her twin. It had been such a stubborn act and Tegwen just couldn't let it go without comment. Her attention drifted from the tree, however, and her head tilted upward towards the sky. At mid-day, it was so bright out of the shade Teg couldn't understand why any hind or stag would be out grazing. The only appealing course of action was to lie under the oaks until the much cooler hours when the sun was almost gone. Then, and only then, did the fawn plan to venture out into the herd. "It's so darn hot."

Drystan chose to ignore the remark, though it made her giggle inside. She angled her gaze upward alongside Tegwen's, staring up at the hot sky. "I thought you liked the hot." Drystan remarked dryly. She herself loved the night. With her dark coat, she found it easy to melt away into the shadows and wreak havoc whever she wished. Tegwen, on the other hand, matched the hot daytime perfectly, and it was a wonder that she didn't feel the same bond to the day as Drystan felt for the night.

"It makes me sweaty." The thought of sweat was quite repulsive. It was hot and foamy and smelled something fierce. Though she wasn't especially fond of the night, either, she much preferred early mornings, when it wasn't too hot yet, but it wasn't too cold, either. Nor was it too quiet. Another thing Tegwen couldn't stand was complete silence. It was scary, and the only thing that can happen to silence is it can be broken. When silence is broken, it's never a good thing. A hungry wolf's howl or a twig snap, either way, it's bad. "Y'know, I kinda like dawn better. It's not nearly as hot. But it isn't chilly, either. Just...warm. I really like warm." Thinking back over her statement, she realised just how stupid that had made her sound. The fawn rolled her eyes at herself and shook her little head.

Drystan snorted, shaking her head. "Why?" She asked, somewhat perplexed. She loved the night. The silence, the occasional soft cooing of owls, the mysterious rustle of leaves, and perhaps even the far-off calls of the wolf that so intrigued her and always left her giddy. She loved the sound. The wild ferocity and the mystery hidden behind that call. Or perhaps there was just something wrong with her had.

At her sister's question, Tegwen really had to think. She'd yet to be questioned on the reasons of why she loved something. And it was quite a good question, too. Why did she love the dawn so much? There were several reasons, really. For one, the temperature was just perfect. Nice and warm, perfect for sun bathing. And then there were the little squirrel familes that ran about chattering at eachother. And the birds. She never understood what any of them were saying, but their songs were so sweet. It was sort of a hobby of hers to get up nice and early and listen to the birds sing their morning chorus. Then there were the flowers. Tegwen much enjoyed sniffing them for several minutes, and then quickly devouring them. If she woke too late, the good ones were gone. "There are plenty of reasons. It's just a great time of day."

ooc :: this is great. x) i'm building her personality through this roleplay.

It was rather hot today, that was why many of the hinds were doing their grazing in the shade of the trees and the talk was at a minimum. Everyone seemed slightly subdued, well, the adults at least. Despite the strong sun, the fawns were still jumping all over the place and playing their little games. A lone light brown hind wandered casually across the meadow, head up high and green eyes occasionally darting to the young deer as the ran past, but besides that she seemed completely in another world.

Dyani had a lot to think about, not bad things, but interesting things that had come along quite unexpectedly. Some of the other hinds were dumbfounded and annoyed, which Dyani thought was quite silly really. Then again, maybe she was just hanging around with the wrong deer. That could be it. Ahra and her friends weren't exactly the nicest of beasts. Flicking away a fly with her ear, Dyani began to head towards the old fallen oak, one of her favourite spots to relax.

When the young hind reached it, she took a moment to realize that she had company. Dyani eyed the two thoughtfully, trying to pick why they were both so interesting. Oh there it was, the coat colours. She nearly laughed at herself for taking so long, since it wasn't everyday two deer of such contrasting were born. They were both a much talked of topic within the herd, much like herself really. Apparently they were odd, Dyani just found them cute.

Time had past in which she been staring not at them but right past them lost in her own thoughts. But when she came back to reality she gave them both a broad smile. "Good day."

"Think what you will, nighttime's the best." Drystan retorted, throwing her head up high. The break of dawn meant the end of an era, to her, and it was every single day that she experienced the thrill of nighttime and the sadness that was sure to accompany it only a few short hours later. Winters were the best. Night was long, and the contrast of the snow, white against the night sky, was wonderful.

Drystan's head turned at the sound of another deer. She screwed up her brow, peering thoughtfully and rather confusedly at the hind that approached herself and her sister. "... Mom?" As the hind drew nearer, however, she could see that she was of a light shade of brown than her mother, and from her eyes ran white stripes that her mother had not had. But the similarity of the two hinds was shocking, and Drystan took a protective step back toward her sister. Then she realized. The hind stared right past them, into space, for a few moments. Drystan tilted her head, frowning curiously. So this was the hind that every talked about - the rather spacey one. "I know you..." She murmured softly.

It is funny, isn't it, how in a group of two or more, one suddenly becomes the protector. The natural leader, they are often called, yet that title brings much more than leader ship. It gives that creature a power over the rest of the group, but with that power comes great responsibility. The other memebers soon come to look to this 'leader' as their protector, the one who will make sure no harm is to come to them. And then in larger groups, such as a herd, there is the one leader above the rest, and then several semi-groups, each with their own 'leader'. The groups are made by playmates or familes, or sometimes a bit of both. They can be large or small, but either way, there is that one who is the protector, and then those who are the protected.

In the little group at the fallen oak, there were two members, seperated from the others by passed events and fur colors. In many societies, the unusual and different are talked about and starred at, and, in extreme cases, even shunned. Though Drystan and Tegwen had yet to feel the sting of a bully's harsh words, the pair had formed a group for their own mental protection. And in this group, the obvious leader and protector was Drys. Teg's mind raced over this philosphy as she took a few steps behind her twin. It was almost instinctive, as the scatter-brained doe came towards them, interrupting what could've been an rather peacefully uneventful hot summer's day. However, it had been destined to be quite the opposite, save for the hot part, and Tegwen sturdied her legs, ready to follow whatever Drystan's course of action was.

As she stood behind the melanistic fawn, she took the time to study the hind before them. The resemblence to their fowl mother was uncanny, and it took some harshe words to herself for the albino to shake off the feeling of attatchment she suddenly felt towards the hind. Snorting, Teg went on with her usual scrutiney of newcomers, and scanned the furs of the deer. She wasn't an ugly one, that was for sure. Her patterns were quite lovely, actually, the light brown blending pleasantly with white stripes below the eys and on all fours. But it was the grey saddle pattern that stuck out to Tegwen. She'd never seen a deer with a saddle pattern before, though she had seen a fox kit with a similar one once. Yes, she was a pretty hind, that was for sure.

The hind admired the two youngsters a moment longer before she began speaking, quite happy with the sudden meeting. "I hope I didn't interrupt anything. It's very nice to meet you. It is such a lovely spot this one. I often come here just to relax and nibble at the grass. When the sun hits it just right it is..." After a moment Dyani trailed off, having just realized both fawns were staring at her, as if she had just sprouted another head. It was somewhat unnerving.

With the albino cowering slightly behind the dark furred one, they both stood before her with the exact same expressions on their face. The hind giggled pleasantly, giving them both another wide smile. "Oh do you?"Dyani asked the melanistic fawn with only a hint of surprise. "Have we met before? I don't recall... Oh well. Even though you know me, I think I should introduce myself again. I'm... oh, look at that, you have a smudge behind your ear."

Though they still stood together looking uncertain and almost a little afraid, Dyani casually moved closer and licked behind Drystan's ear until she was happy with it. How she could possibly see a smudge on fur so dark was a mystery, but she still managed it and then stood back proudly. "There, all better. Nice and clean like your sister. Now where was I? Oh yes, my name is Dyani."

"Oh, I..." Drystan blinked in surprise as the hind came forward to groom her ear. How she had ever seen a smudge was anyone's guess. But at that moment, she felt at home. She felt safe. Safer than she had felt in a long while. She stared back at Dyani as if she had, indeed sprouted another head. "Uh... Drystan." She managed to blurt out, coming back to her usual self more or less. "And she's Tegwen."
