Well it's not exactly flying, Riycan thought, but gliding sort of maybe skimming above the ground. Out on the ice of the local skating rink Riycan attempted to further his skating skills or rather bring them to a level where he was tripping every forty five seconds or so. Blue and yellow wings spread wide he move with the greates of care across the slippery surface.
He was alone today his sister having opted against the extra practise. It made it easier and harder at the same time, easier as he wasn't trying to base his own movements of hers ( which considering their hugely different heights and body structures worked horridly) still it was also harder becuase it seemed like everyone else out on the ice today was experienced and they made him look pathetic.

Xaxis looked dimsally around the rink, feeling absolutely wretched in the cold. Why ever Lucien had needed to come here, the raven wasn't entirely sure.
"I told you to bring a sweater," Lucien commented, shimmying off his own jacket to offer it to his . . . son. "Here's your shoes - just be careful." For all his grumpiness, Lucien did care about Xaxis, and always worried about the sickly raven. Even if the raven was now taller than himself!
Xaxis took the jacket which was much too large in the shoulders, but far too short in the waist. "You didn't tell me this place would be cold," it was almost a whine, a pathetic sound coming from such a pretty Guardian.
He'd never been to an ice rink, and had wanted to see what it entailed. He'd thought something wonderful - ice was cold, sure, but it was also beautiful. The raven had imagined someting entirely different. Instead of ice sculptures, there was nothing but an ice floor.
Lucien shrugged his shoulders, giving Xaxis a sidelong look. "I'm gonna be a bit, shouldn't be too long though. If you need me, I'll be by the concession stand, I know the guy who works it." Giving Xaxis an encouraging pat on the back, he headed up the stairs of the rink, calling out as he left, "Go skate, Xaxis! You might enjoy it."
Xaxis watched Lucien disappear up the steps, and looked sullently at the floor. Despite the cold, he was attracted to the people whizzing by. They looked like dancers, gliding ever so gracefully around the floor. Some slow, some fast - wow - those who picked up speed could almost be flying.
A tug at his heartstrings. Oh how the raven missed those days.
"Doesn't look that hard," the Guardian of Disease talked himself into actually lacing up the skates. They were cold and uncomfortable and it was so strange to walk on them~!
Hobbling over to the entrance of the floor, Xaxis lookd up just in time to see - - KIN!
But . . .who was that? The green and yellow wings were unfamiliar, and Xaxis had trouble putting together the feeling. Must be someone new~! Seeing the boy slowly skate past, the raven fluttered his wings. "Hey! Wait up!" He crowed, eyes light with the joy of finding Kin.
Of course, the raven also forgot that he wasn't on ground. Trying to jog after, Xaxis took two steps before his feet slipped out from under him and he fell flat on his a**.
Starteled and embarressed, the raven's expression was a mixture of shock and horror. He fell~! Oooh . . . And the ice was so cold!!!

Riycan having seen someone calling to him out of the corner of his eye slowed down, when the person failed to catch up he carefully turned himself around only to see that whoever this boy was, had fallen. Ah well at least he wasn't the only bad skater here.
Fighting the flow of the skaters all headed in the opposite direction Riycan glided over to the fallen one. The older boy gave off a strange sort of energy that peaked his interest not quite the same or as strong as special plants did but worth investigating none the less.
" Hey there I'm Riycan who are you? Why did you want to talk to me? Oh and becarefull when you fall becase if you fall face first and your lips touch the ice they can get stuck there." He chattered cheerily to this stranger.

Xaxis was thoroughly embarressed. His cheeks, at first flushed pink with cold, were now burning bright red from shame. Here he'd fallen, face first, in front of everyone.
Ugh. Why had he even bothered to try this skating thing? Even the boy who skated over to him seemed to have better balance than Xaxis. And the fall had hurt. The Bird just knew that he was going to wind up with a bruise on his tail bone by the end of the night.
But pride got in the way, and the thin Bird wasn't going to give up that easily. Looking up at Riycan, he offered out his hands, hoping to get some help up. Xaxis didn't trust the ice, anymore, and more importantly didn't trust his feet~!
"I'm Xaxis," he explained, taking a moment to thoroughly study the chit-chatty boy. His lips would get stuck? Well, Xaxis had no intention of getting stuck to the cold ice! Just let the ice try and he'd . . he'd . . . well, there wasn't a whole lot of diseases that Xaxis could cast on ice but the ice wouldn't be alive for long if the raven had HIS way about it.
"And I"ll be sure to be careful," he promised, black wings twitching in irritation. He was cold, he hurt, and was humiliated within the first five seconds of hitting the ice. Today was going to be a great day, wasn't it?

Carefully but swiftly Riycan hauled the older boy up. He wobbled himself for a second after he let go but managed to maintain his balance. He was thankful to his teacher drilling basic standing balance into him in his first four lessons. " If you can't stay upright being still you can't hope to stay upright moving" was her motto.
"Xaxis eh? That's a neat name, I bet no one has problem saying your name in school." He grumbled. He couldn't count the amount of times he'd had to correct teachers, librarians and secretaries.
"Oh and look at that girl she can really skate, I want to be like her someday" he said pointing to a tall thin teen who managed to find enough space to jump land and sit down spinning on one foot. " That's a double toe loop I think followed by a sit spin." Riycan's voice was filled with awe. " I can't even skate backwards yet nevermind do stuff like that."
Someday though, he though, someday I'll fly across the ice and through the frozen air.

Xaxis did manage to stay on his feet . . . sort of. He wobbled every now and then, but so long as he didn't make any dramatic movements or gestures, he was fine.
Xaxis had to admit, he was impressed with the skill and talant surrounding him. Even those who didn't show off like the girl Riycan was gaping at, were still in a much better position than the raven. Then again, many of the people didn't have huge, molting wings to have to keep still either.
The raven glance sidelong at Riycan, curious about this school-thing he chatted about. School? The only school Xaxis had ever been at was the Birdcage, and Shanuh's lessons. Sure, he knew other kids went to other places, but he'd never heard of kin going to those establishments.
Hmmm.
Maybe this one was . . .weird. Different. Unexposed.
"It's very nice," Xaxis agreed softly, his attention more on the green jay then anything else. "So how come I haven't seen you around the shop?" Having lived his life at the Birdcage, Xaxis couldn't understand why he'd never met Riycan before. It seemed like ALL the Guardians were attracted to the shop, or at the very least were attracted to one another. Maybe this one met some of the other Guardians? He'd have to ask. Later.

Riycan pondered Xaxis's question why hadn't he ever gone back? He'd never felt a pull really never needed to. He had his mother and his brothers and sister and they kept him happy enough. Still now that he thought about it was probably strange that he'd never even visited after changing.
" I don't know really, I guess I've just always been busy or something" He frowned at this. "I guess I should go sometimes though and see people, cept strangers aren't really that nice a lot and last time I met anyone like me they tried to hurt mork." Riycan still remembered that day rather well when his fallign plush friend had been attacked by a stick weilding boy who was rather agressive. The other chatty hyper one hadn't been too bad but he'd known the agressive boy and he'd wandered off feeling left out.
In the end Riycan often foudn it easier to spend time mainly with his siblings who were understanding and trustworthy.

Xaxis glanced down at the boy, doing his best to keep still and not go falling flat on his face again. It was easier said than done, but thankfully the raven managed. Sort of.
As Riycan talked about Mork (Xaxis hadn't a clue who or what that was - a sibling perhaps?) he felt a strange detachment of feeling. There were some who seemed to have more violent tendencies, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
Sometimes death needed people to be agressive. Even Xaxis had a temper when his patience was tested. Part of him wondered if Riycan had ever met the colourful boy, Rascir. Rascir was the least harmful Bird in the group, and had different views when it came to life and death.
Maybe the two could get along if they met, considering staying away from The Birdcage (to Xaxis at least) was a freakish thing to do.
But, to each their own.
"Well, perhaps if you visited more often, the strangers would become your friends. There are others now, who don't know any. And there's always Shanuh and the others at the shop. Maybe you should give it a try, come visit again. You never know what may happen or who you may run into."
It would be nice to see others at the shop. They were all Kin, no matter how different their opinions, personalities and views ranged, and that meant they should all be together. It was only natural - to have this green jay stay away from the group would only further ostracize the Bird.
Better to get him to come back now then leave him to his own devices.

Riycan nodded " I will I'll drag mom there and maybe Tode, Tode got his snake there you know, a really pretty python , he's never been there but mom bought the snake there when she wanted to buy me except well I wasn't there."
Letting his attention drift for a momement Riycan watched another skater go by and then he tried to copy them. Succeeding he slid back a few feet." Ha I can skate backwards now now Tiwaz has to catch up with me."
It occured to him a moment later then that Xaxis didn't seem all that happy on the ice. " Um too much practise is bad for the ankles you know do you want to maybe get a hot choclate and talk or something." Riycan sighed inwardly he had nop experince in stuff like this, he'd met his siblings friends before but never really talked with any of them and his siblings were his friends. This whole talking to strangers thing was confusing.

Xaxis gave a little nod at Riycan's words, before his feet decided that the motion (no matter how slight) was enough to cause his feet to start slipping.
Xaxis immediately spread wide his wings, giving the awkward things a few flaps as he tried to regain his balance. It wasn't easy and he wound up twisted in an awkard angle, but he didn't fall.
"Getting off the ice sounds wonderful," the bird agreed. He clung onto Lucien's jacket and kept his wings spread wide as if they could save him. No, the only protection they offered was a little extra warmth and padding.
Xaxis didn't like the cold, and he most certainly didn't like the ice. Without waiting for the jay, Xaxis made his way ever so carefully to the edge of the rink, glowering at a few adept skaters that passed. As if they couldn't skate around him, oh no, they had to skate in FRONT of the beginner.
Bastards. All of them.
It took awhile, but the black raven finally made it off the ice. Skating on ice was bad, and walking on blades was even worse. Flopping down in the first row of seats, the raven decided the shoes were coming off and never going on again.
No matter what science and physics and technology and fashion could bring a person, birds weren't meant to walk on ice.

Riycan took his time making it off the ice not wanting to insult his new friend by beating him to solid land. Besides every bit of extra time out on the ice was worthwhile for him though he could understand how some may not view it that way.
Once he'd caught up to Xaxis and begun unlacing his skates he grinned " I think hot chocolate with extra marshmallows is in order, oh and chips even though they aren't warn or maybe a hot dog or something, food is always good." Mind no longer occupied by skating Riycan was ready to move on to new things, however his mind was latched rather firmly onto the idea of eating.
" If you live at the shop and you see lots of us do you know how many of us there are?" The earlier conversation now had Riycan curious about his kin.

Unlacing his skates, the raven was relieved to be off the wretched ice. The rink was an entirely unpleasant place; it smelled of sweat, smoke and cold, was far too crowded with far too many stairs, and doing anything on the ice caused one to slip and loose their footing.
No, no, Xaxis did not care to be at this place and could only hope Lucien would be finished with his "errand" soon. For now though, the black Bird thought it best to accompany Riycan. He seemed to rule the roost when it came to skating. Maybe Diacyn could appreciate this world, but surely not the raven.
"Food tends to be appetizing," Xaxis agreed in his distant, detached sort of manner. Hot chocolate? Eh, the liquid sounded least appealing. Chocolate was incredibly rich, and he'd had some bad experiences with that sort of food. But he'd give it a try again, or maybe see if they offered tea. A place like this, though, he highly doubted it.
Hot dogs and chips weren't bad, especially when he had a chance to try more than just leftovers or the molding discarded waste of humanity. It tasted like crap compared to squirrel and other such roadkill, but it could be satisfying in its own right.
Glancing at the green jay, the raven thought about it. How many were there? "Well, there are a lot. There's Savius and Iamel, my best friends. Diacyn grew with all of us, Rascir I'm not sure about. I met a Robin the other day, and there's the Hummingbird and Cardinal. There was another one of us, a bit of an extremist, but he's . . . not with us anymore." Xaxis still didn't understand entirely what happened with Darzavien.
All he remembered was Shanuh getting mad and being very, very angry over something. The kite had disappeared or . . . something peculiar as such.
Oh well. Who was Disease to worry?
"There are others, I think, but those are the ones I know best."

(nn apology for the long wait)
Riycan stared at Xaxis, there were that many! He really really did need to visit now after all even if past experiences hadn't been great in a group that big there was bound to be interesting people and some whom he could make friends with.
" Food is one of the best things int he world" Riycan stated firmly, after all it had been food that had lured him to his mother and lead him to being what he was now. "Followed closely by the special plants" he mused. He didn't expect Xaxis to understand the second part but that was ok becuase then he'd get to explain and that meant they could talk longer.
