MAGICAL MISHAPS, the GAME!!! To those who don't know I'm currently staying in Ireland as an ERASMUS student, taking the masters in the Computer Games course. One of my classes is Games Design, where we must develop an original game from scratch
Magical Mishaps is the concept I'm going to use. Why? Because it's an interesting idea with loads of potential
But in order to make it work I'll need the help of everyone, guardians, questers, stalkers and lurkers alike You guys helped me breath life into this shop and kept it alive for over a year. It is you who know the Mishaps world and make it work. It is you who know what makes it so appealing in the Mishaps and the best people to ask what would you like to see in the game

What is Planned:
Note theat nothing is definitive. The game is prone to change, since this is only the beggining idea So if you have any sugestions don't be afraid to give them. And if they are better than the original idea, then I'll gladly change it wink
I'm going to try to use the original concept as much as possible. The same maps, the same Mishaps and maybe even the same guardians and their families
This is what is planned so far: - The player will start by picking the Mishap. Each has different attributes and quirks, that the guardian (a normal person) must get used to
- During the baby stage the player can only control the guardian. They must try to keep up with the demanding Mishap, keeping him from getting into trouble and at the same time try to introduce him to new things - The Mishap will constantly demand for food, sleep, getting cleaned, and try to crawl away to explore on his own - When the Mishap reaches a certain level, the guardian will receive a quest to complete, something to do with a specific tendency of that Mishap
- When the Mishap becomes a toddler, the player will have some more control over him, but can control the guardian as well at certain times (getting food for the Mishap) - At this point the player can start to interact with other Mishaps, completeing mini tasks that will improve the relationship between them and increase the Mishap's level at some points - When the Mishap reaches a certain level, the guardian will get a new quest to solve, this time with the cooperation of the Mishap
- As a kid, the player has full control over the Mishap and can start exploring the HQ on his own, though cannot access forbidden areas until he has some level of self defense (and even then some will still be off limits) - At this point the Mishap can take more challenging mini tasks and start going to lessons to incerease his levels, not to mention starting to cast magic - In some mini tasks the player can have some level of control over other Mishaps. The bigger the relationship between them, the higher the control - It will be at this stage the plot will start, introducing the Mishaps the reality beyond the HQ and some of the hidden past of that place - Also the Mishap can try to find out more about certain characters and the HQ - When they reach the proper level, they will get another quests, this time for the Mishap alone to solve. About a certain skill they need to develop, depending on which path he's starting to take
- As a teen the Mishap can now enter all areas in the HQ (though some need some items first) - At this stage the mini tasks are more complex and often need teamwork to be accomplished, even if the level of familiarity isn't very big - The new classes will teach the Mishap how to fight, though the old ones are still available, specially magic - The plot will begin to thicken, taking the Mishap to pick one side, preferably the same most of his friends belong to - When they reach the level they'll get a new quest, focused on the development of a certain skill
- Once as youth, the Mishap can improve his abilities further. It's important because at this level the game will start to include more fights - The plot it's running at full speed now. There are beasts invading the grounds and the Mishap will often have to help to fight them off - The player should have full control over the other Mishaps as well, if the relationships have been built - At the right level, the final quest will arrive, the one that will unlock the Mishap's true potential. But it's much more demanding than the others and help may be necessary
- Once adult the Mishap must go and meet the source that drives the plot - There he can either fight alone or with the party he built along his development
Note:
I received my teacher's feedback on the game. Although he thinks the story is original, the gameplay isn't
He proposed making the game more pet oriented. That is, instead of having full control over our Mishap we have to keep an eye on him and introduce new stuff to interact with Having the Mishap trying to escape the guardian to gain stealth points becomes meaningless, but on the other hand it's quite interesting tring to learn more about our Mishap by the reaction he has to the orders (ex: refusing to enter a hole because it's dark) and how willing he is to accept them, depending on how he was raised
But the other thing he proposed was to change the Mishaps and the story, so the focus would only be raising the Mishap. I don't mind changing the story a bit here and there, but I will not have the Mishaps be anything less than what they already are Also, in my opinion, the game would be much more interesting if besides having the guardian trying to keep the Mishap alive, try to figure the plot
I don't have these details worked out yet, but there is one thing I'm thinking of changing in the original story for the game to work: having a little helper assigned to do small tasks, like going to the minishop or watching over the Mishap while the guardian is away (a person cannot play 24/7)
Please give me your opinions on this

The Plot:
The game can't focus just on developing the Mishaps, it's not challenging enough. And if it's not challenging enough, the players will get bored and the game won't sell *quoting my teacher* So a plot must be included, where the Mishap must gather clues and items to solve it
I don't have many ideas in this section. I think something gradual would be the best choice, starting with small strange occurences and evolving to a more dangerous event as the Mishap grows
I'll leave this open for sugestions wink

The Characters:
Obviously the Mishaps are first in line, but sadly I can't have all in the choosing list. The game needs other Mishaps to play with the chosen one and some older to influence and be part of the plot But I can have cheat codes to access them, so that's not a big prolem wink
Anyway, this is a couple of ideas on roles non-pickable Mishaps can play. I'll leave up to you guys to sugest more or having me alter or delete this:
- Deimos: captain of the Black Dawn - Lenore: flying teacher - Malachi: king of the tree forest - Sabriel: major pain in the a** *j/k* - Reid: master of the ventilation system - Aphrodite: tour guide and advisor
Depending on which Mishaps become non-playable, I hope to have the original guardians taking care of them As for their families, as long as the characters are origial to the guardian, I shouldn't have problems in including them if you like. But others that belong to other shop, you must have permission given by them
The staff, teachers and supervisors will be there as well. I'll probably will include a few more, but that depends on what's later decided
Creatures living in different parts of the HQ will also be included (forbidden forest ones too), but the level of interaction is yet to be decided

List:For now I will only accept guardians to submit. I'm not sure if I should include outsiders to the HQ or not, depends on what's decided for the plot It's up to you guardians to decide if I'm allowed to use the Mishap or not and in which way. I maybe the person who draw them, but you breathed life into them. And personally I won't like to see them acting in any other way So please fill the form and keep in mind they too will grow along the game Quote: Allowed to use? Suggestions:
You can mention anything to include or alter in the game, such as: - New places to add to the HQ - Items to include in the minishop or lying around - Hidden locations - Mini tasks - Plots - Sub-plots - Spells - Cheats - Etc, etc, etc
All ideas are welcome blaugh
General Ideas and Suggestions:
- Personality test to determine the Mishap - Create your own Mishap instead of chosing him - Have an in-built calendar and celebrate different holidays - Have guardians and other Mishaps as save points and guides - Certain Mishaps becoming rivals or foes, depending on the choices taken - Romance - Having a gold/credit earning system - A giftgiving/friendship system, where friendship points are gained if the Mishap enjoys the gift, increasing the chance to help out in return - Have the Mishap participating in plays
Items:
- Using items to create non-playable Mishaps or fancy items - Having quest completion and costumization items sold in the minishop - Collect items to use in special potions or combine - Using items to get favours - Not having the best items earned in mini quests and tasks - Have the other Mishaps buying items from eachother - A journal to where important info, screenshots and past adventures are stored
Map:
- Unlock the areas with mini tasks/special events/sidequests - Allow the Mishap to have free reign in the game until he takes a quest/scenario - Lots of stuff to explore, find and experiment - Have a room for the Mishap, where they can store their stuff and customize, or just reflecting the Mishap's nature - Be able to save anywhere
Battle, Magic and Skills:
- Combine the different abilities of the different Mishaps to get around the obstacles - Have some Mishaps as healers - Have different fighting styles for the different Mishaps in the party and having them throw suggestions or tactics - Have non-playable Mishaps included in the party - Skills like vending and scavenge to get more items after a battle - Certain Mishaps wouldn't enter the party unless other is already there
Quests and Tasks:
- Races, climbs... different challenges given by other Mishaps to test abilities - Needing help to retrieve back an item - Help out the other Mishaps in their tasks - Getting Pyren unlost - Trade items for Retta's special plushies or other valuables - Instead of quests, having mysteries to solve to reach the next stage - Finding lost items for the other Mishaps - Not having the full storyline revealed to only one Mishap - Mini mysteries geared towards the Mishap's quirks - Plot the quests and tasks according to the Mishap's tendencies - Hide and Seek - Cooking, where the Mishap must hunt down the ingredients to match the recipies he finds and wants to try - Collect items to cure a wounded creature from the forest and have it later as an ally - Fetch items to trade in Cato's secret minishop
Plot:
- The Mishaps being turned to their original state or stone/glass

Idea/Sugestion:
A good way perhaps to involve stalkers, if you want to, is maybe create a 'mini-game' or little quests, (or even put it as a sub-plot, but highly doubtful) to help 'create' mishaps. Like. getting the items for what the MM is made of and give it to the stalker person or someone.
For instance mine: Cherry Pie, Dragons Blood, + Lich Dust. And some point use the two (F-BCP + DB) to create a Ruined Pie, which then you could send/give/dump into a boiling pot with the Lich Dust to create the mishap for me, the stalker. xD
They of course wouldn't become a playable mishap to interact with (Or you could but highly doubtful) but you could get a super fancy item out of it. ( In my case probably a LOT of gold or some kind of artifact since my family is old and very rich. x3 )
They could be a few "unnessessary-but-fun-quests" to do. *loves those kinds of things*

Idea/Suggestion
i love the idea of the game overall, but it might be even more interesting if you had to find two items (as your first quest maybe) to create your mishap, that would mean there would be a way for owners who played to get their actual mishap in the game, and also for non-owners to create a one-of-a-kind mishap that they could later quest for as a custom. [hope that makes sense]

I think that having the player 'create' their mishap in the beginning of the game instead of choosing from stock mishaps is a really good idea, and would probably sell a bit better when on store shelves, because of the customization.

Suggestions I'm thinking of setting up the HQ as a 'free reign' area, with, of course, some places locked away for later stages in the game(like you mentioned). Let there be minigame/special event 'portals' for mishaps/players to find, or earn through sidequests. - Something like NFS Underground2 ( heart ), or the earlier Harry Potter games where you can wander around freely until you take up a quest/scenario 3nodding
My other suggestion's a little ambitious, but it might be fun. How about implementing different holidays according to the in-game calendar? It's implemented in Zoo Tycoon, and I personally think the whole thing's rather cute whee -recalls Santa and his reindeers flying overhead on Christmas, or everything turning orange and black on Halloween with a witch on a broomstick flying past- XD <3
That's all for now, I'll post more when I think them up 3nodding
