You're probably thinking "What?!" -- So was I!

While I've watched the Fa'e community from afar for years, and while I've kept Adelaide in my mind since the last Fa'e concept contest, I had peacefully reconciled myself to being simply a silent lurker in the Fa'e throughout the rest of my Gaia career. Although I loved reading diaries and roleplay, admiring the art, and dropping by the Fa'e thread to catch up on the latest conversations, I never would have imagined actually being invited to become a part of the community like this. A few weeks ago I received a PM asking me if I was interested in having Addie brought to life as a second generation Fa'e. I was absolutely flabbergasted, and filled with deepest joy.

Of course, first and foremost I'd like to thank Karma_k and Sayuri_Nitta, amazing gaians and incredibly giving people, for being willing to take a chance on a relative Fa'e newcomer like me. You've proved to me that no matter what the circumstances, and no matter how distant or unlikely the idea may seem. dreams can come true. My Fa'e concept may not have been the most well developed or popular, but you believed in me--a relative stranger!--enough to actually take something away from your characters, and I can't even begin to express my gratitude. I'm incredibly honored by your decision and I will not let you down.

Thanks go as well to the rest of the guardians for making the Fa'e such an incredible community that I can’t wait to become a part of, and of course to Anya for creating these amazing creatures, the true originals of the breedables forum. I'm so grateful to have an opportunity to become involved in such an amazing project.

User ImageGeneral Information

Given Name: Adelaide Haunten (Addie for short)

Meaning of Name: Adelaide is the capitol of Southern Australia as well as a pretty name. I was thinking of 'sheila' but it seemed a little too cliche. 'Adelaide' seems more elegant anyway, more suitable for a Fa'e. The name is of Old German origin and means "noble kind."

Legend: The Aboriginal kangaroo-man Malu (with the feminine influence/gender change from the spirit of his sister Mulumura)

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Undefined as of yet, and it's going to stay that way until she's of relationship age.

Appearance: I'd like to remain vague as it's being determined by the parents, but it turns out Arkie and Sati are actually ideal donors for the original appearance I had in mind for Addie. These original traits were, long slender raised ears (kangaroo ears), dark skin, crimson colored eyes, and aboriginal tattoos in a style similar to aboriginal x-ray paintings that are you see in many art galleries these days.

Personality: Adelaide has an active mind and an insufferable urge to explore her ideas. She's stubborn and independent, with a strong drive to see and do anything and everything she deems important. Unfortunately, the slightest obstacle in her way or restriction of her freedom results in immense frustration, which can cause her to act rebellious or vindictive. In times like these she'll act completely disdainful and totally intolerant of people. Especially when young, she embodies a sort of sulky conflict that extends into many of her encounters and or conversations. Wise are those who realize she does not do this to be cruel, but simply does not understand the concepts of tact and social rules and graces.

While Addie is very vocal in an almost feral way (snorts, soft growls, etc) she will never have a fluent grasp of English, particularly grammar. She uses only as many words as are absolutely necessary to get her point across and has no tolerance for synonyms. (Why make up more words when you already have one that fits?) Predictably, this can lead to problems in her interactions. Under stress her mind moves way too fast for her mouth to keep up and she ends up babbling like an idiot, or more likely, becoming completely speechless. She's known to utterly freeze up in a flurry of indignation. She makes sure to make her feelings of contempt about the English language known, but secretly hates it that any average Joe off the street can talk circles around her. Truthfully, she finds it extremely embarrassing, and harbors unspoken jealousy for more fluent speakers.

Addie is very much impulsive in her actions. She does not think before responding, therefore If she feels slighted in the least she may very well lash out in defense. This can get annoying and even sometimes confusing because she may take offense at things that fly under the radar of most people. These responses to being 'threatened,' start out small but can easily escalate if the antagonizing causes the opponent to fight back.

Perhaps she can be described as vain. She thinks of her self pretty loftily. Though she's competent in several areas, she's a little too proud of that fact. But despite the fact that she can come off as somewhat haughty, she certainly has her affable moments, as long as she feels secure with those she's interacting with. When she can do so without hindering herself in the slightest, she enjoys pleasing people, and while this is partly because she knows it may likely lead to them pleasing her in return, it also embodies something like courtesy. Sometimes she's so focused on her own pursuits that she overlooks social rules she sees as trivial (read: most of them), and is confused or even angered if blunt actions offend others she was generous enough to spend time on.

While Addie's ability to socialize in a healthy way is certainly questionable, those friends she makes, however few, will have her staunch loyalty, unless they give her reason to take it back. When people show faith in Adelaide it flatters her. This is one of the few surefire ways to foster a friendship with her. She may be meticulously picky but she places great importance on the companions she does have, knowing very well that she may never make more than a few. Viewing herself in a not-so-humble and not-so-accurate way as their 'protector,' she goes to great lengths to 'avenge' a wronged comrade and has trouble understanding if the friend doesn't want her getting involved in their private conflicts.

While Addie's personality may never be described as sunny, she loves to have fun and is willing to reign in her emotions a bit if there's a possible reward of an all out good time. She loves surprises and spontaneity, sometimes even getting pulled into what she sees as battles of impulsiveness with others, challenging them to be as abrupt as herself. This might well get her into trouble someday...only time will tell.

In the face of authority, Addie can be surprisingly submissive for her hot temper. She has an instinctual knowledge of hierarchy and if given what she sees as good reason she will usually stay in her place. However, she does not respect power that has not--in her mind--been earned. This means that during new encounters when she clashes with another, having no previous experience with that individual to base her reactions off of, Addie is likely to get herself into a skirmish, whether that be verbal or--more likely--physical. If Addie loses, she's actually more likely to look up to the winner than foster anger or a grudge (although there are always exceptions) as she inherently respects those who have proven themselves as creditable betters. She may even, in some situations, go so far as to pursue a continued relationship with someone who has physically or mentally bested her. Because of this tendency, Addie has the potential to become a willing second in command or crony to others. The higher her respect for an individual, the more moldable she would be to their suggestions, particularly because, in her mind, respect usually trumps her vague perception of morals.

Addie's independence can sometimes manifest itself in solitude. While she doesn't mind being social and often has fun doing so, she (for a long time, at least) will be convinced that she doesn't need others. This stems partly from the exclusive, isolating bond of the two spirits residing inside of her, and partly from a fierce need not to depend on those who could--at any moment, she feels--betray her. Because of this, Addie will be reluctant to open up to others and talk about her true problems, even if they are pressing or even dangerous. Later in life, Addie may decide this is something about herself which she wishes to change, but that thought will only arise if this strategy gives her considerable problems.

Powers: Teleportation through dream realm, weak sense of empathy for animals

Favorite Food: raw meat*, undercooked eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, particularly potatoes, carrots, and roots
Favorite Beverage: Water
Favorite Type of Music: tribal drums (and anything in general with a strong background beat and few lyrics)
Favorite Landscape: Open meadows or fields, also anything reminiscent of a desert
Favorite Getaway: A dense grove or copse
Favorite Animal: Dog
Favorite Colors: Muddy browns and reds
Favorite Flower: Kangaroo Paws
Favorite Season: Summer
Favorite Thing to Wear: As little as possible. Think something similar to a sports bra and something like shorts/skirt/loincoth. (Addie is not in any way promiscuous, she just hates the feel of clothes, being a vestige of an animal spirit. A need for modesty doesn't factor into her way of thinking.)
Favorite Subject: Athletics. Shows the vaguest of interests in history as she interprets it as a story/myth.
Favorite Sport to Watch: Basketball, soccer, anything with constant motion. She seems to appreciate the contact facet of football, but gets bored with the frequent stops.
Favorite Sounds: Silence, bird calls, native music (a digeridu seems to have a soothing effect)
Favorite Smells: Freshly cut grass, the earthy smell after it rains, running water

*Yes, meat. Partially because of the influence from Malu's sister, the lizard woman, but also--did you know primitive kangaroo species were carnivores? (Run a search for Propleopus oscillans)

Mythos

In the beginning the world was lifeless. Flat... featureless... dead.

Then came the Sprit Ancestors; part human, part animal. They came from the earth itself, crawling out of holes in the ground. These Ancestors explored the empty countryside, touching this world with their magic--and the earth was the catalyst their power needed for divine creation.

The Ancestors ate, slept, fought and made love, and around these actions sprang up all the earth's mountains, valleys, and forests. Rivers were formed from blood, rocks forged from bones, and from the Ancestors' hearts came all the animals.

When creation was complete, many Ancestors vanished, crawling back into the holes they came from. Other Ancestors stayed, their bodies creating physical features of the landscape.

Today, Aborigines believe that all living things and all inanimate objects are inhabited by the Ancestors' descendants. Every earthly thing is part of their spiritual heritage. This is the essence of the Dreamtime. More than just a creation myth, it's an entire realm in which spirits still exist...

(Kata Tjuta at sunrise)

Disclaimer: Because so little is revealed about many aboriginal mythical characters, much of Addie's "mythbase" is currently me taking liberties, piecing together what information I have been able to find in hopes of incorporating it into a version of a myth coherent enough to base a character on and yet still true to the spirit of dreamtime. I'm doing my best to pull on what I do have--a collective general knowledge of dreamtime settings and legends as found in articles, children's stories, mythological literature, and verbal recounting of stories by curators at our local aboriginal art museum. (Fortunately, my home town happens to have the only museum in America devoted to Aboriginal Australian art! This was a big component of my inspiration for Addie's background.)

One thing that I have noticed with these different sources is that, while the stories often overlap, they do not line up perfectly with each other. Each person tells the story a little different, which is how, in my mind, a story should be. Thought to be the oldest continuously maintained cultural history on earth, the legend of dreamtime is ancient, primal, elusive, and tumultuous. Like many early myths, things don't always make sense. In creating Addie, I'm doing my best to tie as many different aspects of the legend in as I can, and yet as part of her character development I must try to be sure there is a reason for each one that works in a present day setting. I am doing my best to find a happy medium. I am doing my best to retell this story.

----
The blazing sun rose over an ancient world of dark, dry earth, beckoning the ghostly spirit ancestors of The Dream out into another morning's light. Upon a low, craggy mountain, Malu, the kangaroo man, was just saying goodbye to his sister Mulumura, the lizard woman. The well-traveled Malu was growing restless, and a yearning in his heart was telling him it was time for another adventure. On his many travels, he had never been to the far west, and it was calling out to him, beckoning with the promise of new creatures to meet, new sights to see, new hazards to explore. Mulumura, however, was aglow with unhappiness. The testy lizard woman despised most creatures, but she loved her brother's company. She had missed him on his last drawn out journey and she was not eager for him to leave again.

"Where are you going?" The lizard woman asked now, a hint of disdain in her gravelly voice.

"It does not matter." Malu chuckled, the soft breeze stirring his spirits. "Somehow, you always know where I am. And I always know how to return to you." The bond between the two was close. So close, that it sometimes seemed to have a mystical quality. For example, at this moment Malu saw his sister was plagued by the idea of his absence, but it was the curious itch in his chest that alerted him to her true dismay.

"Do not worry sister. I will be fine. And I will return to you swiftly. Swifter, the sooner you let me go."

"Go, go, then." Mulumura blustered. "Take care of yourself." She understood. Malu swept her up into an embrace, and within moments was headed for the horizon.

On his travels, Malu saw many things, and came to know many creatures. He met the angry black swans, who had once been two-leggers, as well as a lightning fast creature who related a story of a harrowing encounter with the Bunyip. He even could have sworn one night--although it may have been a trick of the light--that he caught a glimpse of the famous Rainbow Snake.

He crossed the desert, traveling at night under the white moon. He reached the ocean, put his paws in, let the waves lap at his thighs. And when he had had his fill of the west, he changed his course for home.

Malu had traveled almost the entire distance to the rocky cliff where he knew Mulumura would be waiting, when one night he caught sight of a bright orange light burning directly up ahead. A two-legger campfire. He would swing a wide loop in the morning. Little did he know that when he did, his best intentions of caution would lead him straight to a hunting party.

He came upon them just as he hopped out of a copse of thin dry trees. Stunned by the sight of the two-leggers ahead of him, Malu saw it all as if time had slowed down. Their long limbs reaching ponderously for their spears, tilting back with an eerie torpor, and then at last, in a split second, shafts were flying towards him. Had those sinuous appendages even moved? Still transfixed by the mystic quality of the two-leggers' liquid motion, Malu didn't even think to move until he felt the rough stone head piercing through the flesh of his thigh.

Running. The spear, sticking out of his leg, angling backwards with his motion. The head, biting harder each time thick leg muscles contracted. Rhythmic bursts of pain, induced by each jump, synchronizing with the pounding of his heart. His leaps taking on a tottering quality. Blood. Blood spattering in frantic, liquid shapes on the dry, caked earth as he passed.

He lost the two-leggers in another thick patch of foliage, but his new route had led him directly into a dark swampy area, and his troubles were far from over. A quavering howl reached his ears and he whirled around, fear in his eyes. The group of wild dogs surged up at the edges, their stilted bodies undulating in the thick silver mist, dark shapes rising and falling with only the bright pairs of smoldering eyes to give any idea of separate entities within the shadowy mass.

With the spear in his leg, Malu knew he could not flee, and he kept his eyes on the dark mass as it tipped forward, rising like an ocean wave, and fell on him. Gnashing jaws tore at his shoulder, his thigh, the base of his tail, as Malu squirmed and thrashed under the weight of the dogs' bodies; the burden of their snarling growls and rancid breath.

The din grew in a rapid crescendo as the dogs snapped at each other, the rusty scent of Malu's blood driving them into a frenzy. The spear had somehow been tugged out by now, and the kangaroo man felt the world pitch along with his stomach in a dizzy haze of pain when he suddenly imagined he could hear a thin clear voice above the chaos: Malu!

Mulumura.

All at once he could feel her reptilian ferocity building inside him, a distilled tenacity bubbling up in his chest, calling him back, back to her. He must go to her. With a powerful kick of his battered hind legs, he dislodged the dog which had just opened up a gash in his chest, and in a couple of frenzied, violent twists he was free. Lunging forward, with a dog's jaws snapping together a fraction from his heels, Malu ran, his footprints bright red, each leap raking agony throughout his shattered form. His vision was blotchy, but he could see the mountain. It was closer than he thought, he was going to make it. The dogs would not be able to follow.

"Malu!" The voice was stronger now, and he could not be imagining it. As he straggled to the foot of the rocky slope, he focused on the lizard woman's blurry shape, and with vision dimming he felt her strong arms wrap around his form.

"No! Brother!" Mulumura cried out, tilting her head back in agony. "Do not leave me! You must not go!"

Malu's long paw closed tightly around his sister's wrist, and then, to Mulumura's horror, slowly relaxed and let go.

"No!" She repeated harshly, closing her eyes and folding her form over against her brother's body, her throat pressing against his warm shoulder. At that moment, a keening came over her. A sharp tug, as if the connection they'd shared had suddenly manifested itself into a thick rope and jerked itself out of her. She could no longer sense him there. He'd gone beyond her reach. For once in her life, the harsh-spirited lizard woman felt her eyes glaze over with grief. Cradling her brother gently in her arms, she put her muzzle up to his unreceptive ear, and hissed: "Brother...brother, please. You must find a way to come back--" Her voice hitched in her throat as she realized the impossibility of the command. The connection was gone. He was gone.

But something had left her. Some part of her had followed him. Was it impossible that that the rest could not follow? Mulumura grit her teeth together.

"Brother, I can not feel you anymore. If you can still hear me, then listen. I am coming for you. Hold onto me." With that she leaned over his body again. She would not leave this spot. As her resolve calcified, her body followed suit. Slowly, her extremities hardened and changed to the dull red of the bedrock, until the process had engulfed not only her own body, but Malu's as well. Lifeless statues, they gave off a dull sandstone glow under the harsh outback light.

When the sun set on the mountain that night, it set on a sacred place. Hundreds of thousands of year later, Malu and Mulumura's silhouettes would be recognized by natives as one of the many hallowed vestiges of the Dream. The blood tossed to the ancient ground would later become the ochre deposits that Aborigine people painted their faces with. Meanwhile, all that time, the two dormant spirits, locked together as one, would be waiting...

---
Summary

For those too lazy to read the myth or who just want the quick and dirty: In Aboriginal mythos exists a character named Malu, a kangaroo man who went on many travels and adventures in the world of dreamtime. Eventually, coming back from a journey to the west, Malu was attacked by men/got in a fight with a pack of dingoes and was fatally wounded. He died in the arms of his sister Mulumura, the lizard woman. This event is said to be set into stone in the sacred site of Kata Tjuta. A rock pillar on the eastern side, with a smaller rock leaning against it, embodies Malu as he dies cradled in his sister's arms.

Addie is the reincarnation of Malu, with considerable influence stemming from part of Mulumura's spirit which latched onto her brother's retreating soul in grief as he died.

Powers

Being the reincarnation of an animal spirit, Adelaide would have enhanced hearing and amplified sense of smell. She'd be much more attentive to noise than a regular human, often responding to sounds others couldn't even hear. This heightened perception of her surroundings, similar to that which prey species evolved to survive, would make her hard to sneak up on. However, this also makes her somewhat flighty. She is likely to instictively jump or spring back if a sound startles her.

The tendons in her legs would be as tightly strung as a kangaroo's. At first, she would be a bit clumsy, her kangaroo parts all out of proportion. But as she grew she would become much more graceful. By the time she was a child she would be extremely agile and quite fast, able to leap quite high or far in a single bound. This power would grow gradually with her until reaching a peak when she became a youth or adult.

Another possible 'power' stemming from her leg muscles that is actually a factual trait of the modern day kangaroo is that when running, the faster she would go, the less energy she would have to use. This is how kangaroos can travel so fast for so long. I say 'possible' because I don't want her to seem all-powerful. But I could see this ability coming up when her legs muscles are fully formed eg. maybe by her Youth stage.

She would have a very faint link with other animals as she was one herself. Very, very faint. Most animals would be able to understand a few key words from her and vice versa. But it's more of a "horsesense" than a form of communication. She could not, for example, hold a conversation with a regular animal. She could simply "hear" and send a couple of impulses or pictures.

The only other power Adelaide would possess--the magical one relevant more to her past than to her animal physique--is the ability to 'teleport' short distances.

How do the powers and your character relate back to your mythos?

In Dream-Time the Ancestors could travel with immense speed and force; strength enough to leave all the canyons, riverbeds, and mountains of the world in their paths.

When Adelaide would teleport she'd cut a doorway into a special void; a sort of alternate world representing The Dream in present time as The Dream is still very much alive. This world would be set up like another dimension overlaying the one we live in, gridded the same way, and home to all the Spirit Ancestors. eg. If there's a rock in our world that same rock will be in the same place in The Dream, only in it's translucent-ish Spirit Form

In this version of The Dream she'd have all her old powers, including tremendous speed. Yet, in a reincarnated form she wouldn't be strong enough to handle all the energy of The Dream world. Thus she couldn't stay in The Dream for more than probably a second at max. So you'd see her 'teleport' when what she would really be doing is cutting into The Dream, using her powers to move instantaneously, and cutting back into our world in a different spot.

Teleporting would take a lot of her energy depending on the distance she traveled. It's like swimming underwater--you can save energy by coming up to the surface frequently to breath or you can swim as far as you can possibly stand to hold your breath for, though that'll leave you in a pretty tired state for a bit. Adelaide could do a succesion of quick, short teleports through the dream much easier than one of longer distance.

Over time, as she teleported more and more she might start to get a feel for The Dream enough to describe its general features to others. (Picture blinking rapidly in front of a landscape and then describing it to someone else)

These teleports would probably be accompanied by a white mist or smoke, and maybe a signature sound or a scent, both being things that were able to escape from The Dream as she cut into it.

Disclaimers

Fa'e story and art are 100% (C) Anya!

Karma and Sayuri PWN my world. heart heart heart

This has been a non-profit quest.

The picture of Adelaide used frequently in this quest thread is based off of lineart done by artist Tetsuya Nomura. If you like the pic, I'm glad! But I can only take credit for the coloring and the modifications to make the original character look like Addie. (Yeah, I do draw things by myself but I was having a rough day and just wanted to design rather than create. :X )

The various aboriginal art used in images is all (C) respective original artists.

All information on Aboriginal Peoples is from various sources, including books, magazine articles, and internet resources. Feel free to correct me if I have made a mistake in any way. Also, if you know any interesting tidbits about Aboriginees or Australia in general please share them with me! I'll definitely appreciate them. :3

AWESOME! I'm so glad you got your fa'e, Tweek. Adelaide is so cool whee Woot for our Aussie myths. And I still think travelling through the Dream land is the best explanation of where all the crazy stuff from the Dreamtime came from, and where it's all hiding now.
