Why was he here? He was mad at the unfit Parental - the one who had LEFT him. But he had been dragged away, out of the house, and towards this place where they had costumes hanging in the window.

They were somewhere 'downtown', alone with him. People were everywhere, people were milling and talking and laughing. Small things were scurrying around feet...

The curious glare from the alien made his Parental smile - a wide smile, with teeth showing. "Don't look so HAPPY, Kian. This is a costume shop. We're going to get you a halloween outfit."

Halloween? He'd seen some of the kids walking around in disgusting get ups and they called it 'Halloween'. An excuse to be stupid and childish and - "No." Was his clipped response, hand shaking to yank out of his Parentals.

Alas, Kian was too weak. His current body was not muscled as his former one was - there was extra fat everywhere and there was no real whip to his movements. Except for the tail. That twitched and flicked with every agitation, thickly muscled and the ridges were growing sharp.

That, he liked.

"No? Come on, Kian. We're all dressing up this year. Even Iamel. You like Iamel right?"

The fore-eye narrowed dangerously, lips peeling back in a quiet sneer. "NOT a child."

His Parental sighed, chest heaving under the shirt and scarf. It was already getting cold. Already getting a little snap to the air. "It's not being childish."

"No."

"'ther? What's that place?" The habits of formal speech picked up from his family were starting to wear off, thanks to discovery of a radio. Music, and that was a facinating new toy. Not that they didn't have it back home, but they didn't have anything simular to the variety played on Gaia.

He squinted at the store in question. It looked like a clothes store, but the clothes were weird. And their were faces hanging on the wall. Autsu didn't know what to make of it. He fluttered his wings in irritation and tugged at his Father's hand, having not gotten an answer on his first attempt.

"'ther!"

Kniene blinked, a sad little smile coming to his lips. He'd been like that more and more lately, and his own mannerisms, which had started to blend in with the norm, were becoming more and more old fashioned.

"I fear I have not seen such a place before, 'tsu." He admitted, stroking the boy's hair absently as he spoke. Autsu liked being touched, even if his roughness confused the rest of them. "Come, we will see."

It was, of course, he who followed. The second he was given permission the young boy bolted across the street toward the costume shop, not looking at traffic or the people that surrounded them. His wings fanned out, taking up space and cutting a wider ribbon of space through the crowd.

Patrick was about to tug his resisting son into the bright colorful store when they saw a winged thing FLY through the area. The dark man was caught off gaurd, jumping a foot in the air and his hand tightening on Kians.

KIan made a brief noise at the painted nails digging into his arm, own handmoving to wrench of the Parentals grip. He didn't like the touching of someone he didn't like.

"What the hell?" patricks baffled voice burst out, distracting his son for a moment. Sandles shuffled as the alien turned to see what all commotion was about. It had been, apparently, over the strange boy he had seen once in the Park.

Jii, fortunetly, was at home.

Kians eyes narrowed when Autsu got closer, hand raising into the air for a brief occurance of outspoken ness. "'Tsu!" He called out, wondering if the boy would stop for him, for his name.

"You know this kid?"

Yikes! The sound of his name being called had Autsu stumbling to a stop, his wings opening even wider as he nearly lost his balance in the suddenness of his stop. As he grew, he became used to the things, understanding how they could be used to help him balance, instead of just making him clumsy.

"Anne!" His enthusiasm was undisguised, he had fond memories of this particular comrade, and their valient battle against a particularly fuzzy enemy. How good to see him again. "Comrade, you are taller."

A bit of that formal speech there, he wasn't completely free of it, radio or no. "Hi."

It was then that Kniene caught up, a hint of amusement in his eyes as he put a hand on his son's shoulder and tapped those wings in a silent indication that it wasn't polite to take up enough space for four people on a crowded sidewalk. Autsu folded them obediently enough, though there was a reluctance to the movement.

"Who are your friends, my son?" he asked in a murmur, absently petting the boy's wings.

Comrade? Was this like 1984 comrade here? Should Patrick be worried about the friends THIS son aws making too? If it wasn't enough for Iamel to be friends with the owl, or for Yashi to like the tentacle boy... This one friends with someone out of a terrorizing book.

Patrick was still blinking at the strange little child who came up and addressed his son - and an adult. Parent. Oh, that's right.

"Kayanne." The boy introduced himself, drawling out his name. He was peering over at Kniene with curiousity, tail flicking behind himself like a muscular cat appendage. Tsu had wings... but he wouldn't mention that. "And Parental."

"I'm Patrick," He slid into the conversation, smiling at Kniene and then to Autsu. "And you're Tsu?"

"Mmm. You are too." Kian nodded, head having to tilt up to see all of Autsu again - why was he so short?! He was so much more used to being tall. "Tsu, your parental?"

Kniene made an odd contrast, standing so near Patrick. Patrick with his piercings and Kniene with his strange, archaic form of dress. It was a bit warm for a cloak, but the shirt he wore had a definatly out of date feel. The loose white sleeves, the golden embroidered vest. It looked a bit like he was some sort of particularly conservative gypsy.

"I would be Kniene, Autsu's father." He bowed politely, lowering his head and bending at the neck instead of at the waist. "I am sorry if he startled you."

"This is Anne, 'ther. A comrade." And that explained everything as far as he was concerned, he quickly turned his focus back to the other boy.

"He's my guardian, yes." He twisted, looking closer at the equally dark boy in front of him and spotting something that made him so homesick it hurt. Hands jumped up, clasping the strange ring he still wore at his neck, remembering.

"You have a tail." There was no mistaking the sadness in his voice, the childishness falling away, revealing itself as no more than so much pretty gilding. "I had a tail, once."

Patrick was in rather conservative clothing for him - loose jeans with patches and mesh, a shirt looking like it was sewn together by a ten year old. He liked that shirt, but many thers couldn't feel the charm. "Kniene? It's a pleasure to meet you. Don't worry about the startling.. after so many crazy kids, you just kind of get numbed to things. You know?"

Well, he probably didn't, but Patrick didn't care.

No matter what Kian was going to stay, it was offset by the others comment on his tail. All three eyes blinked, the one on his forehead looking to the side. His tail stilled for a brief moment before swinging around for the alien to grab hold of the musclar length.

"This?" He offered, remaining two eyes looking to Autsu, "It throws me off. The balance." His own speech was slightly stilted, lips working as if to say something. He hesitated and then jerked his chin to Autsus wings. "I had those, once. On wrist. Those kept balance. Tail makes the butt move."

Autsu released his necklace only reluctantly, letting it fall back against his shirt, his expression still filled with absolutely undisguised pain. He still wasn't completely aware of how telling his face could be. It had not been so much of a problem when he still had scales. Reaching out hesitantly, he attempted to brush hungry fingers over Kian's tail.

"You use it wrong." He said it bluntly, tact was not something he'd learned, in either of his lifetimes. "It can help, especially with turning and fighting. Wings most often make me clumsy. I am getting better."

Kniene, still petting the wings his son so hated, looked down at the scene before him with regret and bare sympathy. Looking over the two boy's heads, he glanced at Patrick, a look that clearly showed his mixed feelings over the scene.

"Your son is also a criminal, is he not?" He asked, voice soft, so not to disturb the boys.

Kians face was still rather closed off, a scary thing in a child. He had been trying but for too long, he was used to having no emotions at all, save anger. A smile... he did that rarely.

But Autsus reach was met with the barest of flinches, eyebrows furrowing together in contemplation. "But how? Try but.. makes me fall. Too thick, too strong with the rest of me. I'm...not big." He finished, voice frustrated. "Wings on hand, would balance. Could throw weapons. Could USE them. This? Makes me fall."

Patrick hesitated for a brief moment before his chin tilted up, lips pulling into a grin. "No. My son is my son. But he was a crimminal, a long long time ago. I'm his rehabilitation and he hates me. Yours is too?"

"Practice, I think. Drill." Though Autsu knew that everyone on Gaia was not a criminal reborn, he often thought that way. Indeed, the fact that he was discussing former bodies with Anne didn't even seem mildly unusual. Instead, it was a nice change from the confusion of interacting with those who didn't have the trouble of readjusting to a new world and a new body. Anne could understand him. "If we think in our old bodies, we'll be poor fighters."

And that, of course, was the worst fate Autsu could think of. Other than the one he was in.

He removed his hand quickly, bringing his fingers again to the ring on his neck. He'd been built right, once. That was his problem. No matter what he said, he couldn't stop thinking of the body he had owned, instead of the one he did.

"As you say." Kniene agreed, inclining his head to acknowledge the other man's point. "'tsu has adjusted well I think. Though this is the first I've seen him speak of his past."

"Had nice ears in old body," Kian grumbled at the others last comment, small shoulders rising and falling in resignation. The other was right. "Do not want to be poor in the fighting." His chin nodded sharply and then... curiousity struck.

Dark eyebrows furrowed, looking towards teh other once again, the tip of his tail flicking once more. "In the old bodies, how you fight? Hand? Long distance? Sharp-things?" He didn't know how to call swords 'swords' in this body. His father was keen on keeping him without knowledge of that.

Karate or Tae Kwon Do, however, would soon be coming.

"I've never heard Kian speak of his either.." Patrick murmured, nodding slightly. "I wouldn't like to talk about it if I was sentanced to something bad enough to be here. I can't imagine this kid trying to pull what it said he did."

"I had horns." Autsu responded, running a hand over his decidedly unhorned head, "I was a fighter."

Of course, to Autsu it was perfectly clear that the reason he had horns was because he was a fighter, but to anyone not educated in the peculiar nature of his species, the statement might seem a bit random. He knew though. He knew his body had been made, quite literally, for battle. He had been meant as a soldier.

"Guns, when we were serious." What words his father didn't use, he'd managed to learn from the nearby bookstore that his brother so loved, combing the shelves for some memory, to find echoes of the world he'd known. Guns as he knew them were not as they were here. But the concept was the same. "We trained hand to hand, and in lance. Na-"

And he stopped, shocked to find that the name had come so close to crossing his lips, as it only did in the dark, when he mourned. That it could come so casually, so simply. And still hurt so much. Soldiers did not let pain stop them. He made himself keep speaking.

"The royals sometimes used swords."

Kniene nodded in agreement, looking at his own son with often explored confusion in the glance, "I still do not know exactly what he was supposed to have done. 'High Treason'. There were no details."

"According to his picture, it said..avoiding mandatory surgery, starting a civil uprising and killing a large amount of people." His nose crinkled, head shaking slightly.

Autsus slip up did not go unnoticed. Kians three eyes narrowed a little and he leaned over to give Autsus shoulder a brief touch. "Come," The boy said simply, "No talk of fighting and," His eyes flickered briefly, knowingly, "And these royals anymore. We can go--"

"Looking for costumes!" His Parental burst out, interrupting the two boys. Kian running off was a very, very bad idea. "Halloween is coming up and you still need a costume. If you boys need somehting else to do--"

"Am NOT a child." From cordial and even friendly to Autsu, Kians head swiveled to level his father with a glare.

"It isn't childish, Kian. Even adults do it. You can be a pirate? They have swords. And eye patches!"
PostPosted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 9:29 pm

Nevermind the form he had, in mind Autsu was not a child. And while he wasn't quick, he wasn't stupid. Anne was doing him a kindness, but in the way that soldiers were kind. The other boy could have shamed him, or cornered him. Worse, pitied him. And he hadn't.

Autsu was not entirely sure how to react.

And then the man, the 'parental' spoke and Autsu frowned at the unfamiliar word. It had to do with the strange shop, didn't it? Costume. "What is a costume?" He asked his new ally, letting this new confusion distract him from the recent conversation. "Who is Halloween? Why are they coming?"

Not liking feeling so lost, he glared upward at both his father and the other guardian, his expression dark. "I will not go if Anne does not wish to."

Upset, his speech was at its most formal.

"Halloween is a Holiday we have here. It used to celebrate the dead or something like that but you wear outfits to look like other people and get candy. Rot your teeth in a good way." His hand waved slightly, sighing and tilting his head back.

"Kian seems to think only little kids wear these outfits. And it's not true - my eldest is doing it too and he's not a little kid. Is he, Kian?"

Kian sulked softly, arms folding across his chest. "Mel's not childish. But wearing of the strange things--"

"Is supposed to be fun," His father countered, "Not to be childish or stupid. Just to have fun."

The alien hesitated slightly, casting a glance to Autsu. "Tsu was going towards costume shop before? With the running and the wings?" The question was curious, little lips working up in his contemplation. "Costume is outfits not your own, to make you look like something else."
