HOW TO DEVELOP A CHARACTER CONCEPT
Step One: Abilities or Profession.
Try to come up with a rough idea of your character's abilities or occupation. Keep in mind this is a fantasy/cyberpunk setting. If you have questions reguarding this step of your character creation process, which I'm certain some of you will, feel free to post a response in the Q&A forum.
Step Two: Clothing And Equipment.
How does he/she dress? What kinds of equipment does he/she carry (including wepaons)? Think of some gear and garb that your character wears and then come up with a reason why he/she likes them. This, in turn, should give you ideas about his/her background and personality.
Step Three: Name.
Self-explanitory. It's a good idea to contrive a name at this point in the process rather than later, since a good name helps to keep you inspired.
Step Four: Source Material.
It's a good idea to use a character from fiction/non-fiction as a concept for your own character. This doesn't mean you should be cliche and play a clone of that character, but it helps to have a reference.
Step Five: Visual Appearance.
This means artwork. Having a piece of artwork that you can look at that you feel looks like your character is immensely useful in roleplaying that character.
Step Six: Yourself.
Often, we forget that we cannot truely seperate ourselves from our characters. No matter how hard you try, your own personality is going to influence your character's personality. It's better to just work with this fact rather than try to play someone who's completely different than yourself. In otherwords, you may really want to play that bishounen character you read or saw in some book or anime, but is that really somebody who you see in yourself? Try to find the middle-ground instead of just ignoring your own personality. This is very important and often overlooked. Dont make that mistake.
