Maybe he's an orphan...seems like everyone is an orphan. They didn't show his mum and dad when they were fighting with the third. So I'm guessing either they aren't ninja's in the least or they're dead - leaning toward the latter.

no not every one is an orphan. sakura and ino have perents. there just not shown. it would be possible for gai to be lees dad. but then again he is his sensei and they would never match them up if they were related
