I've only seen two revivals of shows that I saw the original productions of, but I have a couple of CD's of either the original or the revival of a musical. Rags needed major changes for its Off broadway revival, if for nothing else to fit the smaller stage it was in. La Cage aux Folles added a minor thing where Georges had some lyrics while his son sang with "Anne On My Arm." Assassins added a song giving us people's reaction to John Fitzgerald kennedy's assassination. there were songs added to the revival of Blood Brothers. I have both CD's of the musical and like the revival, probably because it's what I'm used to, but i really like the narrator in the show.

Ok, I'm a purist. I say things shouldn't change and I know that's idiotic, but some changes don't make sense. though as i think about it, some of the changes, like the ones in Assassins and Blood Brothers make them better.

what do you think about changes in revivals of musicals? Are they good or bad?

Changes happen because the revivals have different directors, with different artistic visions. I like revivals with minor changes - you're not only seeing an old favorite, but also seeing a new show.

Also changes happen to fit our society today. For instance they took out the song I'm an Indian Too in the revival show of Annie Get Your Gun because it wasn't PC.

Its deffinatly a way to make an old play more original so that the director gets a chance to show his stuff. Our high school put on a production of Babes in Arms this spring, where the director pretty much rewrote the script with the help of some students in order to modernize it and give it a new twist. It turned out magnifigantly, and included a quite impressive revolving stage. We all thought he was just nuts when he started babbling about his ideas for the production, but it ended up being absolutly amazing come performance week. Its just a new way of looking at an old idea.
