This thread will be dedicated to the discussing of tournaments and releases.
I will be writing reviews on the ones that I go to and if you guys want to you can do so as well.

Yeah that is basically it.
More will probably be added in due time.

DO NOT QUOTE THE REVIEWS!

It is a much better idea to either refer to it as such:

example

In Legions_'s review on the Timespiral prerelease event and tournament on page 1, I think...

you could also link, if the page is very far back or anything.

This post will be the one where I post links to the vasious reviews that this thread hopefully will generate and other posts that I find a good idea to link to.

Also I will be putting up links to complete image spoilers and new rules primers here later.

Time Spiral, a brief and unwanted piece of history.
I woke up early and the morning fog had not yet dissipated and the entire world seemed to be sleeping.
Rolling over to my left, I gently woke my long time friend that I was crashing at since he was driving.
He woke up and after a quick breakfast we was on our way.
Since we don't live in the epicenter of magic activites really we have a one and a half hours drive to the store where we play.

Getting there at 10 am we all were kind of tired, even though the chill morning air had begun to wake us up it had not managed to do so completely.
After waiting ten or so minutes the owner of the store arrived in a small, old and red wolkswagen. And finally the waiting was over.
The sudden smell of freshly opened booster boxes and the loud chattering in the small store woke me up for real at last. And now I felt that I was really going to enjoy this.
After catching up with some old-timers and getting to know some new ones, the time had finally come for the prerelease to start.

Time Spiral Sealed Deck Tournament

When all had gotten their stuff, consisting of´:
One Tournament Pack
Two Booster Packs
One Prerelease card this time it was Lotus Bloom.

And on a given signal we all started opening our stuff.
Managed to get two of the "maguses" in the tournament pack, the green Magus of the Candelabra and the white Magus of the Disk.
Other than that I can't say I got anything worth mentioning in that pack.
And opening the first booster was more or less a dissapointment.
But then I opened THE boosterpack.
The one that so may hated me for.
The commons where nothing special, not the uncommons either.
But I saw the rare, Magus of the Jar.
WOW, I thought my THIRD magus, nice.
Guess my firends will kill me after this, I laughed a little to myself and looked at the Timeshifted card.
Jolrael, Empress of Beasts. DAMN!! I thought after reading what she did, nice f-ing card. This booster will be hard to beat I though happily and looked at the last card, the foil.
Bogardan Hellkite... I was extatic, I got three really nice cards in the same booster.

Anyway, I built some kind of odd U/W/G beatdown, with the white magus as a last resort along wih Squall Line.
And as bombs I had Jorael, and I even added two mountains and the hellkite, I just had to have all cool rares I got in the main deck. n_n

And afte the fifty minutes we had to buld the decks where over the tournament was on it's way.
The tournament consists of five games á fifty minutes where one faces another one with similar total score, thus making the games more interesting.

Game one, I face a young and relatively new player with a W/B aggro/beatdown.
I manage to take him out after a couple of close ones and I walked away from that game with a nice 2-0.

Game two, A player that I have not seen before that have been playing since "Mirrodin" is my next opponent and I manage to take him out quite fast the first round.
After being forced to take "mulligan" down to four cards the second round I lost that one, since his deck was to fast that time.
Then came the round that I hated myself the most for.
I was down on 13 life, he was still on twelwe,
He attacks with his Unyaro Bees, and his 7/7 wurm produced by Wurmcalling.
I had my Jorael and a face down "Fathom Seer" and twelwe land in play, three of them being island: had no cards in hand.
Since Jorael was my only way to win at this time I did not want her to block and die, and since she had summoning sickness I was unable to use her ability.
So I declare my seer as blocker on the wurm and the bees go through blasting me down to 5 life after being boosted using all of the other guys green mana.
Great I thought and went into my upkeep, and that was when I noticed my mistake.
I had not turned my seer phase up, and that meant that I had not enough cards on hand to ue Jorael's ability.
Pissed at myself I lost the game and shook the guys hand.
Hated myself the entire night due to that mistake.

After that I had no luck with the games, I don't know if the other decks got better or if just got uninterested at that point, but however I lost the following round too.
my friend that I faced had a B/G thallid-thingie deck and I was chanceless.
The following games I actually won, against a R/W storm/aggro and a U/W flying/beatdown.

did not make top-8 still and therefore I had to pay for the draft that always follow the prerelease.

Usually the draft that follows are more my kind of style and I usually find myslef getting among the three best every time.
The last two (guildpact, dissension) I got 2nd, 2nd. And both times I lost to a friend in the final game. So...

Timespiral draft that followed the real release tournament

And this time I decided not to be any worse. The first booster I got had a Magus of the Disk and thus I decieded to build my deck around it.
The next booster I noticed had Knight of the Holy Nimbus. Nice I thought, maybe a W/? knight/rebel/something deck maybe.
But the good white cards kept coming and before I knew it I had drafted mono-white the entire first round, I just had to do it when I noticed that noone else seemed to take the white cards.
And therefore I decided to go mono-white all the way, and try and go with a white-weenie.
Said and done, when the draft was done I had 42 white, one black and two red cards.
Mono-white-weenie it was!

We all built our decks and the rounds started.
The rules where the same, only we did not play five games each, but we played four since we were only 12 players.

Game one
This was when I noticed that I had done a wise choise in drafting the way I did after crushing my opponents B/G fungus deck both two rounds in less than seven minutes.
Me 2-0 pling - the owner of the store we played in and a real nice guy that I have had the privilege of getting to know.

Game two
Once again I got the same results, the guy I faced this time relied on his two Empty the Warrens and his Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician
He was no match against the speed of my deck so I plowed through his goblins like a hot knife through butter and victory was achieved within minutes.
Me 2-0 ? - a nice goth-rock wannabe with maybe not the longest experience with magic, but he is a nice guy and he really likes a good game.

Game three
This game I had not the privilege of drawing really anything I needed and his Unyaro Bees and Spectral Force was too much even for me.
Even though I actually managed to wear him down using my "Sacred Mesa"
Me 1-2 Lejon - The long time friend that drove me here, if I was going to loose to somone I wanted it to be him.

Game four
This was more or less my glory, I managed to wear his B/G/W suspend/saprolig beatdown deck using cunning and good tactical moves.
The rounds where quick yet intence.
Me 2-0 Widde - One of the guys that have been to every prerelease that I have and more. A nice guy that gave me the comment right before our game:
"So you drew mono-white, that's a little cheeky aint it" n_n

I managed to get once again on second place, this time after the only one that actually beat me. So once again, second place after my friend... -_-

The night was fun and I went home with a smile on my face after getting some of the cards I needed for my shadow.deck eager to complete it and try it out.

Planar Chaos pre-release 20th January
This was not the ideal day for me to play Magic because I had catched a cold the day before, but if you only can play at a tournament 4 times a year tou can't be picky. And when you are the only one with a driving license among you and your friends (atleast where the most of us live) everyones participating is up to you. So I drove 1,5hours to where the pre-release was held together with Legions_ and 3 other friends, after waitong for about 30min in -15 degrees celsius the shop opened and we could get in there and warm up our frozen limbs. At 11am the pre-release began with 19 participants.

Planar Chaos pre-release [sealed]

After getting one TS tournament pack and 2 PC boosters and the pre-release card the deck building began.

The first thing I opened was the tournament pack:
Wasn't that impressing got a Sengir Nosferatu and a Kaervek the Merciless and nothing else that was any good in black and red, but I hoped to get a few good cards in those colors in the boosters so I could go atleast black in my deck. In blue I got nothing good, in green and white I got some decent creatures.
Going from a bad tournament pack to even bader booster packs. Nothing useful in black or red. Blue wasn't even worth mentioning. And yet again some decent cards in green and white.
After a while of thinking I decided to go with a green/white deck with lots of creature, with 4 fuguses (plural?) and 2 slivers (Gemhide and Sinew)

First Match
Met a green/black/white deck that was pretty similiar to mine, he had some "resque creatures" and pretty good creatures.
Round 1:
He won the dice roll and decided to begin. We traded hits until I got out enough creatures to hold back his attacks and attack him until he lost the first round. The round ended with me on 14 life points, so it was a pretty "safe victory"
Round 2:
He decided to begin once again. No problem here, had much luck with my draws and could play a creature almost every turn and all he could do was to try to hold back my attacks. I had 20 life points when the round ended so it was a flawless victory (I didn't have any life-gain in my deck).
Good match, I had much more luck when it came to draw cards but it seemed that he got a good deck.
Record: 1-0

Second Match
After the first match I recieved some hopes that the deck wasn't as bad as I thought it was and went on to my next match. I met a Black/Red /Green deck with good creatures and nice spells.
Round 1:
Lost the dice roll once again and the opponent this time also decided to begin. I had the upper hand for the first part of the match but he got lots of nice creatures that eventually beated me to a bloody pulp.
Round 2:
Probably my best round in the whole tournament. Got a Wormwood Dryad (I love that card) on turn 3 and enchanted it with Griffin Guide the round after, 4 quick beatings with a 5/3 flyer and my opponent was beaten on turn 7.
Round 3:
Not much to say about this round. He played some creatures while I mana-flooded, easy victory to him.
One good, one bad and one decent round in this match-up.
Record: 1-1

Lunch time: We ate Pizza and I got a headache that didn't want to go away.

Third Match
Doesn't remember much from this match, my opponent had a better deck that ran blue and black and totaly dominated the match and after 2 quick rounds he was the winner.
Record: 1-2

Fourth Match
Not much to say about this match, my opponent had no luck at all and Man-screwed in the first round and Mana-flooded in the second.
Record:2-2

Fifth Match
The last match before the top8 draft. If I would win this match I would advance to the draft. My opponent had a black/green/red deck which contained good creatures and some removal.
Round 1:
Very close round but he won it after I made a mistake in casting Utopia Vow on his Fury Sliver so he could cast one of his Avatar of Woe (He needed one more black mana).
Round 2:
He had the control early in the game but I managed to stop his attacks. No attacks and stuff like that for some turns. Then he plyed Kaervek the Merciless and the match was over, I couldn't do anything and he just swinged a few strikes at me and I lost the game and the chances to go to top8.
Record: 2-3

I ended at an 11th place in the tournament, while 3 of my friends managed to go to the top8 draft, but all of them got beaten in the first round.

I played another draft when the top8 had theirs and managed to get a 3rd place with a green deck that splashed white for some good flying creatures, the splash could be side-boarded to black so I got removal instead of creatures. My record For that draft became 3-1 with the first match as my only loss.

Eh, well, it's clear that I'm the only guy in Maryland going. sweatdrop I guess I wouldn't have to worry about the competition in here then, huh? (And yes, it was a compliment, not an insult. xp I don't think I'd have a distinct advantage if, for example, Lord Yawgmoth was sitting right across from me! gonk )

Well, good luck to everyone in the upcoming prerelease; I know I'll be posting my experience here. Y'know, since I'm so lovable. whee

Heres my account of the Prerelease

Deck:

My card pool was forcing me to play three colours. Two of my best cards were white, but the rest of my other white pulls were absolutely unplayable.

Land

7 x Forest
5 x Mountain
5 x Swamp

Spells

1 x Homing Sliver
1 x Frenzy Sliver
1 x Greenseeker
1 x Imperiosaur
1 x Trespasser il-Vec
1 x Mogg war Marshal <-- love this card.
1 x Ashcoat bear
1 x Tarmogoyf
1 x Phthisis
1 x Venser's Sliver
1 x Ghostfire
1 x Yavimaya Dryad
1 x Wheel of Fate
1 x Fallen Ideal
1 x Sedge Sliver <-- Often a gamewinner
1 x Nacatl War-Pride <-- A glorified lure that kills their creatures, i won every game i got it out.
1 x Might Sliver
1 x Aetherflame Wall
1 x Virulent Sliver
1 x Thornweald Archer
1 x Spinneret Sliver
1 x Lightning Axe
1 x Pudrid Cyclops

Round 1: Ashleigh
Drawn against a younger player, easy win, although no player suffers mana screw.

Match: 2-0
Points: 3

Round 2: Mark
Another fairly easy win, 2-0. I win the second game despite mulliganing down to 5.

Match: 2-0
Points: 6

Round 3: Victoria

I win 2-0, but the first game was pretty close.

Match: 2-0
Points: 9

Round 4: Laura

Laura eventually came 3rd, (56 players) so i don't feel bad for losing to her. I lose 2-0, the deck's lack of colour fixing in a 3 colour deck begins to show through.

Match: 0-2
Points: 9

Round 5:Huw

I win the first round, through playing a Nacatl War-Pride. Huw, however, wins the last 2 rounds, although in round 2 i did have to mulligan down to four. In the last two games i lost because of a lack of correctly coloured mana- this block has few enough colour fixers seeing as future sight is pretty multicolour intensive. Greenseeker has turned out to be a lifesaver (when i draw it).

Match: 1-2
Points: 9

Round 6 (final round): Alex

I win the match 2-0, although it was pretty close in both games. Game 1 won thanks to Nacatl War-Pride, game 2 thanks to Sedge Sliver.

Match: 2-0
Points: 12

Overall Position: 10th out of 56, and 1st out of the 14 under-16s playing.

Prizes: 10 boosters (4 for 10th place, 6 for 1st out of u16s) and a Future Sight T shirt (1st u16)

This was a great tournament, and i managed to ask judges a question they couldn't answer: What is the interaction between the enchantment creatures and Opalescence? My guess is it becomes a 5/5, unless opalescence has been errata'd.

Rofl...Well Alpha, you went to a bigger event then I did. x.X I went to Dream Wizards in Rockville, and the event was much smaller. Pair that with being alongside an obnoxious guy two years younger then me, carpooling with a woman 12 years older then me who seemed to like modern celtic music, and being nailed with a crappy pile during the Sealed event I went to, and my first Prerelease ends up being a bit frustrating beyond the gameplay and the result.

Leaden Fists x3
Sarcomite Myr x2
Ophidian Eye
Spin into Myth
Knight of Sursi x2
Careful Consideration
Looter il-Kor
Cloudchaser Kestrel
Cancel
Fortify
Thunder Totem
Momentary Blink
Blade of the Sixth Pride
Infiltrator il-Kor
Screeching Sliver
Drifter il-Dal
Cavalry Master
Tolarian Sentinel
Veilstone Amulet

Flagstones of Trokair
Island x9
Plains x6

Yeah, I know the land count's a bit low; but considering the biggest spell I had in there was one 5cc instant I figured it wouldn't hurt to make a low curve (And add another much-needed creature. x.x;; ). I was considering white-red at first because I had more removal (A Sudden Shock and a Lightning Axe) and a little more beef (Boldwyr Intimidator), but I picked U because I had almost no other red creatures and the Shadow creatures in the U cards I had seemed about as optimal as suboptimal is going to get. Please try to keep the criticism to a minimum; I already said that the cards I got were a pile. =( The only cards that had any sort of synergy was Barren Glory and Claws of Gix (Of which I was -very- tempted to utilize! XD).

Round 1
Ninshan v. Scooter
Honestly? I got pwned. x.x;; Each time I managed to knock his life down to about 5 or less, and he dutifully butchered me after playing one destruction spell after another on my precious creatures. What I found out early was how deceptively good Leaden Fists are. In the early game it's a post-combat Pacifism on an opponent's creatures. In the late game it's added beef ftw. And if I'm lucky enough, I can use it earlier and play Cloudchaser to free up one of my creatures.

Match: 0 - 2
Points: Zippo.

Round 2:
Ninshan v. John

This was much easier, now that I got the hang of using Leaden Fists with my creatures. It was a pretty easy win both ways, with the second match swinging with Leaden Fisted x2 Infiltrator il-Kor ftw. ^-^ Woo.

Match: 2 - 0
Points: 3

Round 3:
Ninshan v. William

Okay, so this is a win I pulled from the confines of my buttocks. But really, although Knight of Sursi is very suboptimal for its overall mana cost, the fliers and shadow creatures are the only things that've kept me afloat in the entire tournament. Then again, I'm not complaining. twisted

Match: 2 - 1
Points: 6

Round 4 (Final)
Ninshan v. Andrew

Yet another match that I scarcely win. Apparently, suspending a turn one Sursi, suspending a turn two Infiltrator il-Kor, and playing a turn three Looter il-Kor with a Screeching Sliver makes turn 4 fun. biggrin

Match: 2 - 1
Points: 9

Overall Position: Unknown, with a record of 3 - 1 overall.

Prizes: 6 Boosters

Meh...Well, it wasn't a total bust. I was sort of wishing I had gone to the event the day before (And potentially gotten the sort of experience Alpha did). I'd love to do it again, but maybe next time I should run solo, or with a beautiful woman. sweatdrop I guess that's just wishful thinking, though. I didn't get much out of the cards beyond a Flagstones, the promo card and things I got for trading. ^-^ Ah, well. Better luck next time, I guess.

I'm going to Grand Prix Daytona.

Wait a minute...That isn't right. I don't sound psyched enough.

zOMG!! ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMG!! I'M GOING TO GRAND PRIX DAYTONA! OMG! YEAH! YEA! OH YEA!

*Cough*

I'll post a review afterwards, but I'm curious: is anyone else going? I'll be wearing a bunni-hat, so I won't be hard to find..;3

Hey, everyone. I know I haven't posted here in a while - real life kind of caught up with me. =x

I'm going to the Pro Tour Qualifier for PT Austin - the PTQ itself is located in Roanoke, VA on 8/22/09.

It's Standard, and I'm running 5c Cascade. =) I'm posting a decklist in the deck discussion for some potential last-minute tweaking. Wish me luck!

Update - I went 4/5 at the PTQ. Problems ranging from color screw (And trying to go the Cascade route with Cryptic Command and Cruel Ultimatum) to bad matchups (Kithkin and Merfolk. =( Sad panda is sad) made 5c Cascade less then satisfactory in retrospect.

Still, live and learn. Next time around I'll have a deck that scares people (Moreso then usual, anyways. =x).
