So, I just killed a thousand gold (which I'm trying to save up for a Lunar Cloak! ._. Of course, I am never on to actually) on a bunch of the new Halloween gear, and the Amigo set. Of course, I'm now wearing all of it so that my character looks kind of punk in a weird sort of way.
This led me into thinking about how a lot of us spend all the time that we do on our avatars... And got me to wondering, 'why'?
From the hundreds of weird objects that have been added since Gaia started three years ago, and the works of the edits community (I remember a very squee Yuffie edit one friend of mine made several years ago), and etc.etc...
Well, basically, why do we bother with the avatars? It's not like Gaia (outside of you guys ^-^) is all that good a site otherwise. The codebase is often just plain nasty in behavior, and being the biggest forum on the Internet has the side effect, best summarized in this edit of a movie quote:
"Suddenly, retards. Hundreds of them. No, thousands."
Note that I'm not advocating other sites to Gaia - I'm no SA goon. I'm just wondering, 'why?'

I agree with you on many many parts of everything you posted the retards part being a big one.
I spend..time on my avi never! I like simple things the theme I have now is pretty much winter..I am moving to scotland so SNOW and so my summer cloths are out this season. lol. I don't spend time on my avi at all really...but I do post alot and get alot of usless gold.
But as this for a form..there is only so much I can do online that I enjoy! I check mah mail, check mah myspace, check my web comics...that is all. Then gaia was introduced to me. So many topics so many ways to yell at young high school kids. Not every day you can do that.
that is all. 4laugh

I like making my avatar all pretty. It used to be white with usually blond hair like me and now I'm giving it pretty dark skin. Dark skin is better >.>
I'm trying to make it look all bellydancer-ish. Am I doing well?
I guess it's because it's this nifty feature that gives us a goal to work for. It makes us feel somehow validated knowing that our avatar is "teh k00lest" in our minds and it makes us feel good to get praise for it. Much like when we wear certain clothes and try to look our best. We want to get praise for it.

Gaia is a game people like to play, and having certain items brings status, respect, attention, friends, etc. It's an online community where basically anyone no matter his/her race, income, religion, etc. can devote themselves and get some kind of standing. It's a hobby and something people tend to take too far. Although I'm guilty of this, I think spending actual money on a pixelated item is outright stupid. This item helps me in no way in real life, yet I've spent an entire $10 in the two years+ I've been here merely for brief personal enjoyment that gets me no where in life. Currently, I'm trying to make my avatar into an OC merely for personal enjoyment.
I agree, too many retards also. I despise Internet debating but can't seem to avoid it completely (another reason people get addicted: communication and understanding between peers). The Internet is fast, easy, and a place where any and every idiot can voice their opinions, and for the most part, if they use big words and have a couple quick links where "researchers" are mentioned, people listen. neutral

Spiffy Negligee It makes us feel somehow validated knowing that our avatar is "teh k00lest" in our minds and it makes us feel good to get praise for it. Much like when we wear certain clothes and try to look our best. We want to get praise for it. What sort of life are you living that you require validation of your own personal self-worth through the appearance of your Gaia avatar when obtaining items consists of postwhoring and pollwhoring in order to obtain enough gold to even get close to a virtual item people will "respect" or acknowledge as "cool"?

I don't really put much thought on what I dress my avie like. I just buy what I like. If other people don't think it looks fine, I don't care. My avie, and I'll dress him the way I want to, or not at all. As for "better", more "prominent" gear, meh, much ado about nothing, if you ask me. It's too extravgant. Give me shop items any day of the week.

Now that I really think about it and I am not crazy...our avi is sorta' what we want to be. Even though it is our avie I think that is it...not us at all behind it. Our avie is our other personailty. We don't care what others think of us (Some people) we can do what we want say things we normally wouldn't say and be what we really are underneath it with out the pressure of how we look and what others think.
Dressing out Avie up is just another way for us to prove that some of us don't give a damn what you think, or just to look like something we our selves wish we could look like and dress.
Or..maybe my mind is just dribbling....

I only do it because I enjoy seeing my avatar look what I consider is nice. I've thought about why I do it, and ended up not really caring either way. It's just a hobby I do in a small fraction of my spare time.
