She had called her parents to try to get them to send her her birth certificate, but they had absolutely refused to help her. All she needed was that little piece of paper. She had no idea what hospital she had been born in or her birth parents' names and that was all she needed. So Obie found herself in Dallas, Texas, standing on her parents' doorstep, squeezing the life out of Ra's hand as she waited for someone to answer the door.

Ra was nervous for Obie, that and he was hoping he would be able to bite his tongue. He had a distinct feeling he would not like these people at all.
Lacing his fingers through hers he squeezed her hand and watched the door in silence.

Isabel was home for the weekend and took her time answering the door. She was in a bit of a funk since her latest boyfriend was seeming to not understand that he was worthless without her and was taking his time to come crawling back to her. Opening the door, she blinked when she saw the last two people she thought would be on the other side.

"I thought Mom and Dad told you to stay away?" she said, arching a brow and eyeing up Ra. When she realized she recognized him a nasty smirk slipped over her lips. "Getting brave too I see. Bringing your camel jockey boy toy around. That takes guts."

Hot anger flushed her cheeks at the racial slur she shot at Ra and she swallowed hard to keep her cool. She couldn't blow this. All she needed was one slip of paper.

"Is Mom home? I just need one thing from her. I think she can spare me that much and then I'll be out of ya'lls lives for good," Obie said, though her voice was a bit strained.

Heh the b***h would have to come to the door. Ra thought as he smirked at her.
Everything that was unattractive in a female. Trashy style and a ugly look that if she wasn't careful was going to get stuck on her face.
"You told her about my camel racing?" He said to Obie in a theatrical whisper. "I hope you didn't mention my fundamentalist family."

Turning back to Isabel he gave her a look and smiled.
"Such a pleasure to meet you again." He said politely.

Isabel gave Ra a nasty look and then looked at Obie.
"She's not home," she said curtly, then sighed heavily as their mother's voice called down the stairs asking who was at the door. "She won't want to see you," she said, arching a brow.

Obie smirked at Ra's theatrics and could just about kiss him for playing Isa at her own game. When she said their mother wasn't home, only to be contradicted by the very woman they had been speaking of, Obie arched a brow at her sister. She was beyond tired of playing their silly games. Still holding Ra's hand tightly, she simply pushed past Isabel.

"I don't care. She will whether she wants to or not," she muttered, dragging Ra through the impeccably decorated home and on up the stairs.

Ra blinked as he was dragged through the door and looked around. The house was just as he had expected it to be. Pristine and highly unwelcoming.

As they walked up the stairs he started to worry a bit. Isabel's ignorance had to come from somewhere and it was pretty clear that somewhere would be her parents.

Obie paused just before an open door and took a deep breath. Her heart was racing, and it wasn't out of excitment.
"You don't have to come in," she said softly, glancing up at Ra and forcing herself to let his hand go. She couldn't hang onto him forever. Putting on a brave face, she stepped into the room she knew her mother practically lived in and ran a hand through her much shorter hair.

"Mom, you left me no choice..." she started, putting up her hands defensively when the woman turned around with a look that could rival Isa's.

"Get out. You are no longer welcome in this house," Nadine said, rising from her seat and pointing to the door.

"Mom, just give me my birth certificate and I'll leave. That's all I want," Obie said, starting to feel the beginnings of a panic attack. If they flat out refused, she didn't know what she would do.

Ra stayed outside the door, not wanting to cause Obie any extra antagonism. When he heard the woman speak he wanted to go in there and scream at her. How could she say that to a girl whom she had brought up.

He lurked just a moment longer, taking a slight step to the doorway so that he could take her hand if she needed it.

Nadine arched a brow at the young man that appeared in the doorway and the nasty look she gave Obie look only deepened. "Get him out of this house," she said, glaring at her.

Obie glanced over her shoulder at Ra and then looked back at her mother with a frown.
"Don't do that," she told her, giving her head a shake. "Just give me what I want and we'll both leave. Please Mom? I've never asked for anything else."

Nadine gave Ra another nasty look and then walked forward, pushing past Obie and attempting to give Ra a wide berth as she stepped out of her office to go to her husband's down the hall.

Taking a deep breath, Obie ran her hand through her hair again and looked up at Ra with a small apologetic smile as she stepped out into the hall to wait for Nadine's return.

Ra returned Nadine's look and smiled warmly at Obie as Nadine dissappeared.
"Don't even think about apologising for them." He said catching her look. "They can't help being ignorant. I've been called worse names and given worse looks."

He smiled and placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezing her arm lightly.

Obie smirked at as Ra cut her off from apologizing and reached up to caress his face. She heard Nadine and pulled her hand away to spin around. As the woman neared her, she saw the look of disgust in her eyes and felt her stomach seize up in knots. She would have thought she would be used to it by now, but it still hurt to be looked at with such undeserved loathing. She saw her eyes fall on the now small bruise on her cheek, and Obie quickly put her hand over it.

"Seems that you're finally getting what you deserved, Obsidian," she smirked nastily, glancing up at Ra. "Not that I would expect anything less from your kind. Or yours," she said looking back down at Obie. "Just can't keep out of the gutters, can you? Even after everything we did for you."

Obie's heart stopped beating when she realized what it was her mother was hinting at. Ra didn't know anything about that time in her life and she'd rather keep it that way. Reaching out, she snatched the piece of paper out of the woman's hand and took Ra's hand in hers. Who had she been fooling thinking that coming here would make any difference?

"Good bye Nadine. Have a nice life. I'm sure you will now that I'll never be in it again," she smirked mirthlessly as she swallowed hard and turned to start towards the stairs.

Ra blinked at the woman and narrowed his eyes.
"Excuse me." He said trying to keep a lid on his anger. "You don't know me, I'd rather you didn't refer to me as though I am not worthy of your prescence. I think you'll find that my family and Obie are worth ten million of yours. You are the ones living in the gutter, not us."

Taking Obie's hand he followed her down the stairs hoping to get out of the house and away from the neighbourhood as quickly as possible.

Obie paused at the top of the stairs and listened to Ra. Even though she knew his words were falling on deaf ears, they at least meant something to her. Smiling a little, she squeezed his hand gently and led the way down the stairs. She didn't fancy running into her father, especially just after he got off work. Without looking at Isabel, she went straight to the door and got behind the wheel of the rental car she had gotten for them. Dropping the certificate down into her lap, she leaned forward and put her forehead down on the steering wheel as she took deep breaths. She had forgotten how stuffy that house could get.

"So," she said, peering at him from under her arm. "That was my family," she smirked and closed her eyes for a moment. Sitting up, she started the car and buckled her seatbelt.

"Now to the library I suppose," she shrugged.

As she put her head down on the steering wheel Ra rubbed her back with his hand.
"Your better than them." He said running his hand up into her hair so he could lean across and place a kiss on her cheek.

At her suggestion of the library he smiled and nodded.
"Let's go."

Several hours later, Obie sleepily checked her and Ra into a hotel on San Antonio's Riverwalk. They had found out that the Dobre's now lived in San Antonio from the information she had been able to find through the internet, calling the adoption agency, and actually physically going to talk to one of the case workers there. The hour was pushing ten thirty and she was beyond nervous now that they were actually within the same city that her biological parents lived in.

Stepping into the nice room, Obie dropped her things on the floor and fell back on the bed for a moment, her arm over her eyes.
"I have to call them now. To let them know that I even exist," she smirked. "Do you think I should wait till morning Ne-chan?" she asked him.
