User ImageSometimes things went as you planned. Other times, well... you just had to make due with what you were given.

Ha.

Jori panted and glared at the slick, uncompromising slope that reared above her. Below her the wide river ran deceptively quiet; it appeared deep and dark, welcoming even. But the blue knew better; strong currents ran beneath the smooth surface, ready to drag away anyone foolish enough to attempt a crossing.

But at this point she was almost prepared to risk it.

With a soft 'schlick' the small female pulled herself from the mud and disdainfully attempted to shake the dark clumps from her blue fur. Damn it all! So much for a second path out of the packlands. That was obviously not happening.

With an aggreived sigh Jori gathered herself and made another half-hearted lunge at the muddy hillside.

User ImageWho should come sliding down that steep embankment than good old Kiros? He wasn’t in the best of moods, having just made a second confrontation with the cougar. Things were not going as planned. With his luck he’d be a dead wolf, rather than the target. It was for this very reason he was meandering in Kara’s territory. One would think he truly did have a suicidal nature if he were to go creeping around in the alpha’s territory. He never had been the brightest of creatures. Then again, Xan thought it was all very amusing.

Can’t you move those piddly legs any faster? Nope!

It was a cheerful exclamation, as if he didn’t much care for the battering of his other half at the moment. He simply kept up the pace he had been previously taking, that is until the other wolf came into view. His fur bristled. Kiros recognized her, she was that one. The one he did not know, but had instinctively jumped to protect the red. He had been stupid for coming into the pack lands, there were Kara’s little lackies roaming about. They should not have been here at this time of day. Certainly not trying to come through this way! Of all things to do, this was probably the stupidest.

It was why he and Xan had picked this way, because they didn’t expect anyone to be coming out of it. The slope was simply too steep coming from the other direction. Clearly this other wolf didn’t think so. He dug his feet into the thick suctioning goo, sliding slowly to a halt halfway down the steep incline.

“Are you trying to build up muscle structure or something?” he asked cheerfully. As of late Kiros had been in high spirits. There was something beautiful in the air, a feeling that promoted peace and harmonious existence. Even Xan wasn’t his same old commenting murderous self. More and more they seemed to accept one another, thought they still stayed distinct. For a moment the thought of becoming only one wolf, with one thought crossed his mind. Yet – he didn’t like loneliness. Perhaps someday he wouldn’t have to.

Having decided that the hill was, indeed, too steep for climbing, Jori sank back to her haunches and considered her options. Well, option. Stupid. Why'd she come all the way out to this god forsaken bit of land anyways?

Because you haven't seen Kara in so long... haven't seen anyone at all. The blue growled softly. No, that wasn't it! She was just exploring, not leaving. I just want to know what's out here... But it was so lonely. Every night was the same, curled up on the cold riverbank watching the fog rise into the autumn air. Every morning, hunting and eating alone... where was her alpha? Gone... No! Kara wouldn't abandon her.

The wet, slapping sound of paws on mud alerted Jori to the presence of another wolf just before he gave voice to his mindless question.

"Tss, no! And who do --" The blue raised her head wearliy, hackles up and teeth bared. But as she caught sight of the other's peculiar coat, she froze. Recognition dawned and a deep, rending growl rose up out of her throat.

"You."

A faint grin twisted her lips.

The last time he checked his name wasn’t you. However, as of late it seemed that he was addressed as such more and more. It was a strange thing, but he kind of liked it. Perhaps he would change his name to just that, you, and confuse any passerby.

Sometimes. . . was all the response he got from Xan. Kiros himself chuckled at what he had now taken almost to be his friend. People called themselves friends, right? And certainly one with a double personality could claim that he was friends with himself quite literally. The only loyalty they ever showed was too themselves anyway.

“Yes, me.” he replied, quite metaphorically speaking. There really was no me, it was we, - but who was keeping count? Certainly not she. Oh the woes of words ending in e. Perhaps he would become a ballad writer, that would go over well. A protest from the pack of his mind told him he had been right. He had only been kidding anyway.

What on earth has gotten into you? Hmm? You’ve been less pathetic than . . .

The voice of Xan was cut off by a sudden impulse. Kiros shrunk at the thought that surfaced at his mind. Yet Xan knew it as the perfect moment to take over. With that decided he simply sidled right on it, Kiros, for once, only too happy to take over. There was nothing like an awkward situation to calm the mind. A chuckle reached the lips of the lone, grin matching that of the females. Perhaps all the pretty ones weren’t mad. This one seemed kind enough, certainly loyal. He could possibly twist her his own mischievous way. But how?

The thought and answer had been inspired by the lovely half called Kiros. Besides, Xan always did have a particular liking for the color blue. What better way than to warp the red from the inside than to twist the heart of another. Love was a powerful thing. It would take time, oh yes time, perhaps even pups. For now, however, little steps. If you visited, made her think something she wasn’t, well well, you had yourself a catch.

A cackle mounted his lips once more, riding the thick frosty air of the steaming river. Such a spot this. . . . so mysterious. No wonder Kara had picked it. But where was Kara now? Not here. That, for once, was good news.

“Tell me, where is that alpha of yours?”

The last time she'd seen this particular wolf, he'd been a mess; bedraggled, half dead, and certainly no match for Kara or herself. But now... well, whether it meant anything or not, she could at least admire his... coat.

But that was all. Kara disliked this one, if the previous meeting was any indication.

And certainly there must be a reason for the animosity between her alpha and this loner. Which means that loyalty bound Jori to defend the packlands and her pack against this intruder. Reminded of her position, Jori dutifully glared at the male.

The glare faltered, however, when it was met by the calm, cheerful gaze of the loner. ... what's wrong with me? The blue shook her head ruefully but couldn't quite muster up the anger she had before. Not in the face of this... innocence. Kara could have misjudged him...?

A soft laugh interrupted her thoughts and fresh irritation flickered through her. She opened her mouth, a scathing response fresh on her tongue, when the loner spoke. The small blue wilted at the question, a question she had asked herself not long ago.

"I don't know." The voice was little more than a whisper. She didn't know. Kara could be anywhere, hurt, dying! For all Jori knew, this loner could be... the blue wolf narrowed her eyes. Idiot! She admonished herself. You know better. Remember your pack! Her voice was louder this time, harsh with anger that was not completely directed at the male before her.

"And why would I tell you anyways, tresspasser?"
PostPosted: Thu Oct 05, 2006 6:34 pm

Xan waited, and waited, thinking that he’d receive a quick response. Yet still none came. Finally the wolf spoke, though it wasn’t filled with rage as he expected. It seemed almost sorrowful, as if she was missing her alpha, felt betrayed. This was going far better than he had hoped. Ah there was the anger. He chuckled inwardly, careful not to sound too confident around her. If he did, she would know he was up to something.

He pondered a response for the female. Yes, why would she tell him? That was a question he had often asked himself, how to pry the information out of another. Usually he couldn’t, loyalties were too strong. He had resorted to the help of the feline filth, who seemed to be far to good at their job. Even his expertise in the bloodlust of wolves couldn’t prepare him for the speed and malice at which cougars struck. Besides that, they were unpredictable; there was no way of telling when or what they’d do. The only thing that was certain was something would be done.

“I think Kara’s abandoned you. Become bored with the petty little pack, she does enjoy her solitude,” it seemed more a talk to himself than to the female. It was best to make her feel as distant as possible. There had been no excitement in this girl’s life for weeks, perhaps month. She was no doubt itching for something to happen. Could things go any better?

Giving her a soft smile, aided by Kiros (who was much better as such things), Xan padded his way down the hill, mud sucking, and past the female. He wasn’t sure where exactly he was going just yet, but somewhere, all he needed was her attention. Her desire to have someone pay attention to, despite the loyalty to she shared with darling Kara. He paused, and look back, the river water flowing lightly about his feet.

“Yet Kara will always return. She doesn’t leave anyone behind. A cold wolf, though. . .” he mumbled just high enough so the other could hear as he left. He hoped she wasn’t to stupefied to catch what he had muttered. It was after all a trap he had set out for her and things were going so well at the moment. His footfalls remained light in the water, picking their way carefully amongst the sharp protruding river stones not yet warn down by the tell of time. The musty smell of the river swarmed his nose, mist from the rapids rising to intertwine his fur. So he waited, but still maintained a good traveling pace.

Jori's ear flattened at the loner's muttered words, tail tucked unconciously beneath her body. Her anger, as much a weapon against her own fear as it was against this stranger, evaporated. The void left her suddenly cold, uncertain. She recognized the feeling and hated it, despised herself for giving in to it, but she couldn't help it.

Don't believe him, fool. Her jaw clenched, teeth bared in a tight smile. Don't fall for his trap. Kara -does- care, she wouldn't abandon you! But how long did loyalty last? And... was it really disloyal to seek company outside the pack? Maybe not.

She eyed the male warily as he approached her, ready to defend herself in case of an attack. But his smile, coupled with his easy, relaxed stride gave him the air of one out for a stroll, certainly not someone tresspassing on foreign packlands.

Hmph. Don't let him walk all over you! You're just like you sister, you -know- what males do when you give them the opportunity and -- The small female silenced the voice with a sharp snap of her jaws. Where was the harm in company? She wasn't letting him walk all over her, she was allowing him to... to be with her.

But he still hadn't told her what he was doing in the packlands to begin with. She opened her mouth to ask that question and closed it with a grunt of suprise.

Come back? Really?

At once the gamma's ears pricked, hope flooding into her body and tingling through her limbs. For a moment she hesitated, possibly aware of the manipulation. Mist wove a dense blanket between her and the other, but she could hear his careful pawsteps in the water. He could be tricking her... leading her on...

But her youth won out and she strode after him, head low, eyes watchful. After all, it wouldn't hurt to stay with him for a little while... just in case he did know something.

"Do you know where she is?"

Careful, careful. It could be a trap, she musn't give anything away until she was absolutely sure... her pawfalls echoed metallically in the rising mist.

Kiros strayed in the back of Xan’s mind. His thought’s drifting to strange things that he had not thought about in ages. At times he could feel the prodding of the other against his senses and he gave it what it wished, but for the most part he remained lost, a subconscious almost. He didn’t care for what Xan was doing, but he didn’t much mind it either. If they made a friendship within Kara’s own pack perhaps he wouldn’t have to worry about his own skin so much anymore. The constant threat of his assassination was high on his hide; any escape from it was taken with much gratitude. So Xan was his protector once again, his other side, funny how he almost thought of Xan as another wolf altogether. . .

Kiros paused as he heard her voice call out. It was faint against the roar of the river, but he could make it out. The water rushed tenderly by his worn paws as he waited, listening to her soft footfalls as she came nearer to him. Things were going too good to be true, something was going to go amiss. Yet he had to expect that they wouldn’t as well, sometimes things did go this smoothly. He hoped today was one of those days. If not, well, he wouldn’t be surprised.

As usual, Xan found honesty was the best path towards another’s heart. Not that he’d ever lied, but still, sometimes he wouldn’t tell others the full truth, in order to manipulate what they thought. Hidden meanings could be put in the most complacent of sentences, if you knew how to tweak them. Assassin’s talk as it were. Xan tried the same technique with the female, so far, so good.

“At this exact moment, no,” came his soft voice.
It caught the loner’s attention. He never remembered being so soft before; certainly not in this persona. What was up with Xan. He seemed to be playing his part a little too well. Someone had to be the threatening side.

“I did, however, see her only a few days past. Heading in this direction I’d imagine.” He gave a wolf-like shrug and continued, picking his way back to the other side and towards the heart of Kara’s pack lands. Perhaps a bit of small talk wouldn’t hurt? Give her a sense of security. “What are you doing here anyway?”

Cold water rushed over her tired, muddy legs, numbing them until they felt warm again. She could imagine the same chill stream flowing inside of her, cold and unbareable, suffocating... until it covered everything and froze it over. And then she would be warm again, even if it was a deceptive warmth.

After all, would it really matter in the end? Was it better to be cold all her life, or numb and warm for a little while?

With a shake of her head the gamma pulled away from her thoughts, focusing again on the world around her. Misty, cold... it would be nice to be warm again. Even if it was a lie.

"Nothing." Jori responded softly. It was true; she hadn't been doing anything of any importance. She'd been bored, alone, and had finally decided to do something about it. Well, at least... she'd gotten away from the heartlands for a little while.

For a moment the blue listened to the soft splash and gurgle of the stream, picking out the loner's movements ahead of her. The she sighed and continued forwards. If anything, it would be a good idea to tail him. She didn't want a tresspasser roaming freely in their packlands.

At least, that's what she told herself. Curiosity pulled at her, and she obeyed. Yearning for something more than her previously monotonous life compelled her forwards. But, more than anything, the need for another creature by her side, the need for companionship brought her to Kiro's side.

The question, however, was born of doubt and a fear that she was betraying the only soul she'd truly loved. It was asked quietly, so much so that it was almost lost in the rushing of water around them.

"Why does Kara hate you?"

A soft sigh tickled the male’s throat when he paused on the beaded grass to wait. The mist intertwined the both of them, teasing Kiros with subtle glances of the female. Everything seemed choked in a blanket of white, even his breathing deepened the farther inward they stretched. Perhaps it was a warning sign. He should not e here, it was time to go. The wind tugged on his fur, softly whistling in his ear. Sooner begging him to continue onward, make haste. Still he waited. At last she was near enough to him. He knew she would have asked him eventually. Females always had such inquisitive natures.

“Oh dear,” Kiros muttered, tail tucked low. It wasn’t his place to go swinging authority about. In his mind Xan was busy pondering away the situation, as in fact was he. They bickered amongst themselves for a time; a series of worthless rambling s that amounted to nothing. His ears rotated to listen to some invisible force. Ages passed by as the wind began to swirl, parting the mist completely for a few seconds. At last they came to finality.

“Walk with me,” Xan whispered, his eyes flicking to gaze at the blue for a brief moment. She didn’t need to know. In fact he could simply leave now, bcome back day after cday. She would forget he never answered. Yet it was time to tell someone. Time to tell the story as it happened in explicit and extruciating detail. Kiros had to face the full on truth some day, and Xan had long since forgotten how it had truly gone, his memory marred by fantasies Kiros had dreamed up. Secrecy was not a thing to win in. Honesty and trust was the way to win the heart of this female, and the inside of this Kara. Perhaps then it would grant he and Kiros safety, or at least be rid of the red that forever plagued their lives. Connections could be broken even now.

He stopped for a moment, looking into her eyes, as straight as an arrow. He plainly stated his next intentions. “I’m about to tell you the unthinkable. Are you sure you want to hear it?” There was no emotion in his voice. Simply the straight facts if she wished to hear them. If not, she had made the right choice, it was not a story one wanted to hear. Nor a story that Kiros/Xan wanted to tell.

She padded forwards and stopped at the bank of the river. Sand and mud shifted beneath her rough pads and water formed small pools around her paws. The male stood nearby, his image blurred by mist in the dim light. It was all like some strange... dream. Jori shook her head in an effort to clear it.

The wind rippled her coat and swirled through the mist. Trees, unseen above, rustled and creaked. Sound was amplified by the dense air, becoming distorted and misleading. But the female's ears were pricked forwards, focused intently on the blue-grey male. For a moment his lithe form was no longer veiled in mist - for a moment he was the only real figure within her sight.

His voice startled her, despite the fact that it was little more than a whisper. It jolted her back to reality and her own miserable body. She shivered suddenly as the chill of the river stole her warmth. It seemed to creep into her very bones.

This time she didn't hesitate.

"I want to hear the truth." She responded firmly. Green eyes met blue and orange ones, and she held her gaze steady. "I will come with you."
PostPosted: Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:14 pm

"Alright," Xan said, his eyes already lost into another world. His mind was drifting back to the day it all began. . .

"'Come now Kiros! Don't doddle,' she had said. Always so kind, caring, considerate. It was sickening, really. She was a mild wolf, really no more than a pup at this point. I responded quite subtly with only a grunt of my own. We were brother and sister, but nothing alike. Her coat was a vibrant shade of pruple and green with eyes fit to match. Not to mention I suffered from insanity while she was disdainfully normal. More than anything I believed it was her who kept me ludicrously tied down. I'd always had a malevolent nature. It was in Kiros' best interest to be rid of her.

That's not the whole reasoning behind my motives. There was also Kara. She'd always struck me as a rather strange wolf and more and more she seemed to stick to Rechelle. A giant red bur always latched onto my sister. It may have been her family that drove her towards some source of comfort, but that's not how I saw it. You see, as dark and sickening as it was, even as an adolescent I found myself infatuated with my own sister. I told myself we weren't related, but it wasn't so, and Kara drove a severe pang of jealously within me. I began to resent myhself for thoughts and for driving them upon my other half. As a consequence my loathing grew for Rechelle. I began no longer to wish to see her, unless her blood was flowing as a river over my fur. So I decided to rid myself of the both of them once and for all. With Rechelle gone the red would have no reason for staying. Such was my justification for what came next.

It was a bright morning; not a cloud in sight. Rechelle was in particularily high spirits as I remember. We were heading home, a fresh kill on our maws when the idea struck me. 'Wait up a moment Rechelle,' I recall saying. I was shorted than she so it seemed only natural I would be slower. She paused and I took the moment ot dissapear into the foliage. A curious youth, she took the time to find where I'd gone. I waited silenty somewhere in the thicket, though I can't recall exactly what happened. It was all devestatingly fast. I had meant to make it fast; one snap of the jaws and she'd meet death. I missed her throat, and from there all I can remember is being driven mad by the taste of blood. Driven overboard and wishing for the screams that broke the still warm air. To the point of slowing her agony. Even that didn't last long enough, for the red was never far away, a constant protector. She was too late, of course, but on time enough to fuel a hatred for me that will never go away despite my intentions of now. . ."

There was a long pause as he relived the moment, shuddering from time to time; ears constantly flicking to and fro. It would appear as if he heard nothing around him and that life ceased to exist. All that mattered was that past moment and remembering. Not a soul could break the spell he had created for himself. The wind bit sharply against his fur, driving its way through the thick coat, but still he took no notice.

He said it all in such a calm, measured tone. She wanted to hear concern in his voice, pain or fear, loathing even. But she couldn't find it. Maybe it was hidden... or maybe it wasn't there at all. A shudder coursed down her body and she fought to suppress the urge to turn and run. Or fight.

Kara had more than a reason to hate this male. She had a right to hate him.

"You killed her." Jori's voice was hoarse, ears flat against her head. So many memories... too many. "Your own sister."

Don't act so righteous, love. Her conscience cackled gleefully in the back of her mind. You've killed before. Are you so different? Can you judge him? What gives you --

"No." The female stood stiffly on the bank, legs rigid and eyes squeezed shut. It had been self defense! She had been cornered. And she certainly hadn't enjoyed it. She hadn't planned it... it just happened. She hadn't liked the metallic taste of blood, or the screams. They had terrified her.

"Kara is right to hate you." Disgust replaced the fear, clouding out the unnerving memories. "She should hate you!"

Jori braced herself against the ground, teeth bared. "And I won't let a murderer tresspass in our lands." Part of her winced at the declaration, recognizing the irony of her own words. She shoved the thoughts aside and glared up at the male. A soft growl rumbled in her throat. Maybe Kara would come back if Jori could prove herself... by exacting revenge on the one she hated.

Besides, what did she have to lose?
PostPosted: Tue Nov 07, 2006 8:16 pm

Fate had a way of making things come true. And for everyone in question at this very moment someone would suffer the dire consequences with death. Not necessarily of blood, but of body. A death complete in the soul. Even Kara knew that this death was destined for dear Kiros. A body can only take so much anguish before breaking. She could smell the fear in the air, lingering over the foggy skies. Something was amiss in her lands. With a tail held high and ears flattened to a head which bore glittering teeth, she drove forward.

Shock is a deadly thing which bores down on the mind with such intensity not even the strong at heart can take it. Kiros was certainly not brave in the core and so he buckled. His mind faltered, screaming no under a torrent of love and life. He’d never see, or find justice, in the stars or their fated loves. He had betrayed the only kin he’d ever known and loved. Even demons within one wouldn’t make up for such a lowly acceptance of death for another. It was indeed as she said it.

Murder. MURDER MURDER!

It screamed in his mind like a relentless pursuit. A darkness seeped over his eyes, taking command of the very life within. What now for the bloodthirsty lover? What now for the passion of kinship? It was all a dead religion, and he had soaked it in the baths of pain. Such a holy binding, don’t you think? They always say, ‘till death to us part’. Certainly his only mistake had been in breaking that vow. Besides, he’d never made one to begin with.
What are you mumbling about? The wolf’s heart sank, beating faster as it did. Lowered into his stomach until he thought he might wretch it out with his lungs. Death the lone cried inwardly. Outside his body shook, and trembled, his eyes glazed over with a fear so powerful.

Sharp blue eyes watched, following the pangs of emotion lurching through the dark’s body. For now the misted water scoured all view and smell of her presence. It wouldn’t be long till she was discovered. Yet, she didn’t have to worry. Something about that very scene lurched at her heart. If wolves could have shed tears, those very elements would have come to her face. For now only disdain came to her heart as she watched the mad lone tear at himself without realizing it. The last final battle against himself. Who was the real one to blame?

Yes, she had heard the whole story, but could not hold the disgust that Jori felt. Instead she walked forward, parting the mist as she traveled, coming to stand next to the blue. A feeling of pride overwhelemed her sorrow for a moment. A love for Jori, as one loves a sister. Perhaps she’d be the Rechelle that had been taken so sharply away. “Jori,” she called softly, though she was more speaking to the lone that desperately fought himself for meaning. “He is mad. . . and I love him like a brother.” Her tail sank, sorrowed eyes turned to the blue. “You can kill him or keep him. I have no justice to give.” With that she turned hind and left to go wallow in the shallows of a darkened river, hoping that what she had said made some sense.

Xan fought for control, screaming at his other half to calm. He had told the truth, but it didn’t stop the blood from flowing from the wounds that Kiros created. This madness had to stop this instant, but he couldn’t make it. He was harming himself with an overwhelming force and he’d never seen his softer side so angry. For a moment it was his own conscious tearing at his nature. Kiros. . . he whispered. One of us will die from this. They both knew it. The truth was a killer. “You wanted us to tell you. . . now the dead lies in your mind.” He didn’t know what it meant, but he yelped in pain as Kiros screamed threats at him and tore at his heel. Whatever he could reach.

“You make me sick! You don’t deserve to live. You aren’t me! I DIDN’T DO IT!” And then came the silence.

"... you can kill him or keep him..."

Jori watched her lanky alpha dissappear beyond the far bank of the river, shock registering on her features. There was so much she didn't understand, and so much she could never truly come to terms with. Kara... really didn't care anymore? She loved him, even though...? Understanding stirred at the back of her mind, but a cry of pain from the lone male startled it back into the farther reaches of her mind.

Now she faced her 'foe', the one she'd called a murderer... and confusion swept through her. Blood ran slick down the male's sides, leaving bright stains on the wet bank grasses. And his eyes... his eyes! She shivered, starting back from the blank, soul-darkening sorrow and madness she found there. But a greater emotion overcame and enveloped her fear; a deep, sodden grief rose up.

And suddenly it didn't seem so important anymore; the fight, his treachery, her redemption...

She shook from more than the cold, ears flat against her head as she watched a battle that she couldn't understand. Xan's words reached her as she crouched in the long grass, sopping wet and desperately unhappy. The blue's eyes narrowed slightly, then widened with understanding.

...He is mad...

She lay frozen, panting, eyes wide as the battle played out before her. Murderer or no, she couldn't let another tear himself apart in front of her! ...could she? Blood flowed faster, teeth gouged deeper... and something snapped.

She leapt, ears flat and eyes bright with a barely checked terror. Determination (or desperation) held the reins now. Without a second though she slammed into the blue and grey male. Stars shimmered in the back of her eyes, pain rippled through her shocked nerves...

The eerie silence, the wrongness, seeped into her mind and shocked her out of her daze.
